NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	BIBLIA
1 An admonition can be inopportune, and a man may be wise to hold his peace.	1 Hay reprensión intempestiva, y hay silencioso de verdad sensato.
2 It is much better to admonish than to lose one's temper, for one who admits his fault will be kept from disgrace.	2 ¡Cuánto mejor reprender que estar airado!
3 Like a eunuch lusting for intimacy with a maiden is he who does right under compulsion.	3 El que se acusa de su falta evita la pena.
4 One man is silent and is thought wise, another is talkative and is disliked.	4 Como pasión de eunuco por desflorar a una moza, así el que ejecuta la justicia con violencia.
5 One man is silent because he has nothing to say; another is silent, biding his time.	5 Hay silencioso tenido por sabio, y quien se hace odioso por su verborrea.
6 A wise man is silent till the right time comes, but a boasting fool ignores the proper time.	6 Hay quien se calla por no tener respuesta, y quien se calla porque sabe su hora.
7 He who talks too much is detested; he who pretends to authority is hated.	7 El sabio guarda silencio hasta su hora, mas el fanfarrón e insensato adelanta el momento.
8 Some misfortunes bring success; some things gained are a man's loss.	8 El desmedido en palabras se hace abominable, y el que pretende imponerse se hace odioso.
9 Some gifts do one no good, and some must be paid back double.	9 Hay quien encuentra fortuna en la desgracia, y hay suerte que acaba en postración.
10 Humiliation can follow fame, while from obscurity a man can lift up his head.	10 Hay dádiva que no te da provecho, y dádiva que recibe el doble.
11 A man may buy much for little, but pay for it seven times over.	11 Hay postración causada por la gloria, y hay quien, desde la humillación, levanta la cabeza.
12 A wise man makes himself popular by a few words, but fools pour forth their blandishments in vain.	12 Hay quien compra mucho con poco dinero, pero luego lo paga siete veces más caro.
13 A gift from a rogue will do you no good, for in his eyes his one gift is equal to seven.	13 Por sus palabras se hace amable el sabio, mas los favores de los necios se malgastan.
14 He gives little and criticizes often, and like a crier he shouts aloud. He lends today, he asks it back tomorrow; hateful indeed is such a man.	14 El don del insensato no te sirve de nada, porque sus ojos no son uno, son muchos;
15 A fool has no friends, nor thanks for his generosity;	15 da poco y echa en cara mucho, y abre su boca como un pregonero; presta hoy y mañana reclama, es un hombre detestable este sujeto.
16 Those who eat his bread have an evil tongue. How many times they laugh him to scorn!	16 Dice el necio: «No tengo ni un amigo, no hay gratitud para mis beneficios;
17 A fall to the ground is less sudden than a slip of the tongue; that is why the downfall of the wicked comes so quickly.	17 los que comen mi pan tienen lengua insolente». ¡Cuántos con frecuencia se ríen de él!
18 Insipid food is the untimely tale; the unruly are always ready to offer it.	18 Mejor es resbalar en empredado que resbalar con la lengua, así la caída de los malos llega de repente.
19 A proverb when spoken by a fool is unwelcome, for he does not utter it at the proper time.	19 Hombre sin gracia es cuento inoportuno por boca de ignorantes repetido.
20 A man through want may be unable to sin, yet in this tranquility he cannot rest.	20 De boca de necio no se acepta el proverbio, pues jamás lo dice a su hora.
21 One may lose his life through shame, and perish through a fool's intimidation.	21 Hay quien no puede pecar por indigencia: en su reposo no tendrá remordimiento.
22 A man makes a promise to a friend out of shame, and has him for his enemy needlessly.	22 Hay quien se pierde a sí mismo por vergüenza, por respeto a un insensato se pierde.
23 A lie is a foul blot in a man, yet it is constantly on the lips of the unruly.	23 Hay quien por timidez hace promesas a su amigo, y así, por nada se gana un enemigo.
24 Better a thief than an inveterate liar, yet both will suffer disgrace;	24 Gran baldón para un hombre la mentira en boca de ignorantes repetida.
25 A liar's way leads to dishonor, his shame remains ever with him.	25 Es preferible un ladrón que el que persiste en la mentira, aunque ambos heredarán la perdición.
26 A wise man advances himself by his words, a prudent man pleases the great.	26 El hábito de mentiroso es una deshonra, su vergüenza le acompaña sin cesar.
27 He who works his land has abundant crops, he who pleases the great is pardoned his faults.	27 Por sus palabras el sabio se hace grande, y el hombre sensato a los grandes agrada.
28 Favors and gifts blind the eyes; like a muzzle over the mouth they silence reproof.	28 El que cultiva la tierra llena hasta arriba su granero, el que agrada a los grandes expía la injusticia.
29 Hidden wisdom and unseen treasure-- of what value is either?	29 Presentes y regalos ciegan los ojos de los sabios, como bozal en boca ahogan los reproches.
30 Better the man who hides his folly than the one who hides his wisdom.	30 Sabiduría escondida y tesoro invisible, ¿qué provecho hay en ambos?
	31 Más vale hombre que oculta su necedad, que hombre que oculta su sabiduría.
