1 An admonition can be inopportune, and a man may be wise to hold his peace.	1 C’è un rimprovero che è fuori tempo, c’è chi tace ed è prudente.
2 It is much better to admonish than to lose one's temper, for one who admits his fault will be kept from disgrace.	2 Quanto è meglio rimproverare che covare l’ira!
3 Like a eunuch lusting for intimacy with a maiden is he who does right under compulsion.	3 Chi si confessa colpevole evita l’umiliazione.
4 One man is silent and is thought wise, another is talkative and is disliked.	4 Come un eunuco che vuol deflorare una ragazza, così chi vuole fare giustizia con la violenza.
5 One man is silent because he has nothing to say; another is silent, biding his time.	5 C’è chi tace ed è ritenuto saggio, e chi è riprovato per la troppa loquacità.
6 A wise man is silent till the right time comes, but a boasting fool ignores the proper time.	6 C’è chi tace, perché non sa che cosa rispondere, e c’è chi tace, perché conosce il momento opportuno.
7 He who talks too much is detested; he who pretends to authority is hated.	7 L’uomo saggio sta zitto fino al momento opportuno, il millantatore e lo stolto non ne tengono conto.
8 Some misfortunes bring success; some things gained are a man's loss.	8 Chi esagera nel parlare si renderà riprovevole, chi vuole imporsi a tutti i costi sarà detestato. Com’è bello quando chi è biasimato mostra pentimento, perché così tu sfuggirai a un peccato volontario.
9 Some gifts do one no good, and some must be paid back double.	9 Nelle disgrazie qualcuno può trovare un vantaggio, ma c’è un profitto che si può cambiare in perdita.
10 Humiliation can follow fame, while from obscurity a man can lift up his head.	10 C’è una generosità che non ti arreca vantaggi e c’è una generosità che rende il doppio.
11 A man may buy much for little, but pay for it seven times over.	11 C’è un’umiliazione che viene dalla gloria e c’è chi dall’abbattimento alza la testa.
12 A wise man makes himself popular by a few words, but fools pour forth their blandishments in vain.	12 C’è chi compra molte cose con poco e chi le paga sette volte il loro valore.
13 A gift from a rogue will do you no good, for in his eyes his one gift is equal to seven.	13 Il saggio si rende amabile con le sue parole, ma le cortesie degli stolti sono sciupate.
14 He gives little and criticizes often, and like a crier he shouts aloud. He lends today, he asks it back tomorrow; hateful indeed is such a man.	14 Il dono di uno stolto non ti giova, e ugualmente quello dell’invidioso, perché è frutto di costrizione; i suoi occhi, infatti, sono molti invece di uno.
15 A fool has no friends, nor thanks for his generosity;	15 Egli dà poco, ma rinfaccia molto; apre la sua bocca come un banditore. Oggi fa un prestito e domani lo richiede; quanto è odioso un uomo del genere!
16 Those who eat his bread have an evil tongue. How many times they laugh him to scorn!	16 Lo stolto dice: «Non ho un amico, non c’è gratitudine al bene che faccio». Quelli che mangiano il suo pane sono lingue cattive.
17 A fall to the ground is less sudden than a slip of the tongue; that is why the downfall of the wicked comes so quickly.	17 Quanti si burleranno di lui, e quante volte! Poiché non accoglie l’avere con spirito retto, e il non avere gli è ugualmente indifferente.
18 Insipid food is the untimely tale; the unruly are always ready to offer it.	18 Meglio inciampare sul pavimento che con la lingua; è così che la caduta dei cattivi giunge rapida.
19 A proverb when spoken by a fool is unwelcome, for he does not utter it at the proper time.	19 Un discorso inopportuno è come un racconto inopportuno: è sempre sulla bocca dei maleducati.
20 A man through want may be unable to sin, yet in this tranquility he cannot rest.	20 Non si accetta un proverbio dalla bocca dello stolto, perché non lo dice mai a proposito.
21 One may lose his life through shame, and perish through a fool's intimidation.	21 C’è chi è trattenuto dal peccare a causa della miseria e quando riposa non avrà rimorsi.
22 A man makes a promise to a friend out of shame, and has him for his enemy needlessly.	22 C’è chi si rovina per rispetto umano e di fronte a uno stolto si dà perduto.
23 A lie is a foul blot in a man, yet it is constantly on the lips of the unruly.	23 C’è chi per rispetto umano fa promesse a un amico, e in tal modo gratuitamente se lo rende nemico.
24 Better a thief than an inveterate liar, yet both will suffer disgrace;	24 Brutta macchia nell’uomo la menzogna, è sempre sulla bocca dei maldicenti.
25 A liar's way leads to dishonor, his shame remains ever with him.	25 Meglio un ladro che un mentitore abituale, tutti e due avranno in sorte la rovina.
26 A wise man advances himself by his words, a prudent man pleases the great.	26 L’abitudine del bugiardo è un disonore, la vergogna che si merita è sempre con lui.
27 He who works his land has abundant crops, he who pleases the great is pardoned his faults.	27 Chi è saggio nel parlare si apre una strada e l’uomo prudente piace ai grandi.
28 Favors and gifts blind the eyes; like a muzzle over the mouth they silence reproof.	28 Chi lavora la terra accresce il suo raccolto, chi piace ai grandi si fa perdonare i suoi torti.
29 Hidden wisdom and unseen treasure-- of what value is either?	29 Regali e doni accecano gli occhi dei saggi, come bavaglio sulla bocca soffocano i rimproveri.
30 Better the man who hides his folly than the one who hides his wisdom.	30 Sapienza nascosta e tesoro invisibile: a che servono l’una e l’altro?
	31 Meglio l’uomo che nasconde la sua stoltezza di quello che nasconde la sua sapienza.
	32 È meglio perseverare nella ricerca del Signore che essere un libero auriga della propria vita.
