NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
He who loves correction loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.1 Whoever loves discipline, loves knowledge, stupid are those who hate correction.
The good man wins favor from the LORD, but the schemer is condemned by him.2 The honest obtains Yahweh's favour, the schemer incurs his condemnation.
No man is built up by wickedness, but the root of the just will never be disturbed.3 No one is made secure by wickedness, but nothing shakes the roots of the upright.
A worthy wife is the crown of her husband, but a disgraceful one is like rot in his bones.4 A capable wife, her husband's crown, a shameless wife, a cancer in his bones.
The plans of the just are legitimate; the designs of the wicked are deceitful.5 The plans of the upright are honest, the intrigues of the wicked are full of deceit.
The words of the wicked are a deadly ambush, but the speech of the upright saves them.6 The words of the wicked are snares to shed blood, what the honest say keeps them safe.
The wicked are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the just stands firm.7 Once thrown down, the wicked are no more, but the house of the upright stands firm.
According to his good sense a man is praised, but one with a warped mind is despised.8 Prudence wins praise, but a tortuous heart incurs only contempt.
Better a lowly man who supports himself than one of assumed importance who lacks bread.9 Better a common fel ow who has a slave than someone who gives himself airs and has nothing to eat.
The just man takes care of his beast, but the heart of the wicked is merciless.10 The upright has compassion on his animals, but the heart of the wicked is ruthless.
He who tills his own land has food in plenty, but he who follows idle pursuits is a fool.11 Whoever works his land shall have bread and to spare, but no one who chases fantasies has anysense.
The stronghold of evil men will be demolished, but the root of the just is enduring.12 The godless delights in the snare of the wicked, but the root of the upright bears fruit.
In the sin of his lips the evil man is ensnared, but the just comes free of trouble.13 In the sin of the lips lies a disastrous trap, but the upright finds a way out of misfortune.
From the fruit of his words a man has his fill of good things, and the work of his hands comes back to reward him.14 Abundance of good things is the fruit of the lips; labour brings its own return.
The way of the fool seems right in his own eyes, but he who listens to advice is wise.15 Fools think the way they go is straight, the wise listens to advice.
The fool immediately shows his anger, but the shrewd man passes over an insult.16 The fool shows anger straightaway, the discreet conceals dislike.
He tells the truth who states what he is sure of, but a lying witness speaks deceitfully.17 To tel the truth is to further justice, a false witness is nothing but deceit.
The prating of some men is like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise is healing.18 Thoughtless words can wound like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
Truthful lips endure forever, the lying tongue, for only a moment.19 Sincere lips endure for ever, the lying tongue lasts only a moment.
Deceit is in the hands of those who plot evil, but those who counsel peace have joy.20 Deceit is in the heart of the schemer, joy with those who give counsels of peace.
No harm befalls the just, but the wicked are overwhelmed with misfortune.21 No harm can come to the upright, but the wicked are swamped by misfortunes.
Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who are truthful are his delight.22 Lying lips are abhorrent to Yahweh; dear to him those who make truth their way of life.
A shrewd man conceals his knowledge, but the hearts of fools gush forth folly.23 The discreet keeps knowledge hidden, the heart of fools proclaims their folly.
The diligent hand will govern, but the slothful will be enslaved.24 For the diligent hand, authority; for the slack hand, forced labour.
Anxiety in a man's heart depresses it, but a kindly word makes it glad.25 Worry makes a heart heavy, a kindly word makes it glad.
The just man surpasses his neighbor, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.26 The upright shows the way to a friend; the way of the wicked leads them astray.
The slothful man catches not his prey, but the wealth of the diligent man is great.27 The idle has no game to roast; diligence is anyone's most precious possession.
In the path of justice there is life, but the abominable way leads to death.28 In the way of uprightness is life, the ways of the vengeful lead to death.
