1 Then spoke Eliphaz the Temanite, who said:	1 Ma Eliphaz di Theman rispose, e disse:
2 If someone attempts a word with you, will you mind? For how can anyone refrain from speaking?	2 Se noi imprenderemo a parlarti, forse lo prenderai in mala parte; ma chi può rattener la parola, che gli viene alla bocca?
3 Behold, you have instructed many, and have made firm their feeble hands.	3 Tu fosti già il maestro di molti, e alle braccia stanche rendesti vigore:
4 Your words have upheld the stumbler; you have strengthened his faltering knees.	4 Le tue parole furon sostegno ai vacillanti, ed alle tremanti ginocchia desti conforto:
5 But now that it comes to you, you are impatient; when it touches yourself, you are dismayed.	5 Ma ora, che il flagello è venuto sopra di te, tu se' abbattuto; ti ha toccato, e ti sbigottisci.
6 Is not your piety a source of confidence, and your integrity of life your hope?	6 Dov' è la tua pietà, la tua fortezza, la tua pazienza, e la perfezione del tuo operare?
7 Reflect now, what innocent person perishes? Since when are the upright destroyed?	7 Rammentati di grazia, qual mai innocente perì? e quando mai furono schiantati i giusti?
8 As I see it, those who plow for mischief and sow trouble, reap the same.	8 Io vidi anzi coloro, che coltìvaron l'iniquità, e seminavano all'anni, e affanni mietevano,
9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his wrath they are consumed.	9 Perire a un soffio di Dio, ed essere consunti da un alito dell'ira di lui:
10 Though the lion roars, though the king of beasts cries out, yet the teeth of the young lions are broken;	10 Peri il lion che ruggiva, e la lionessa che urlava, e i denti de' lioncelli furono spezzati.
11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.	11 La tigre rimase estinta per mancanza di preda, e i lioncini furono spersi.
12 For a word was stealthily brought to me, and my ear caught a whisper of it.	12 Or un' arcana parola fa detta a me, e quasi di fuga il mio orecchio ne intese il debil suono.
13 In my thoughts during visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,	13 Nell'orrore di una visione notturna, quando il sonno suole impossessarsi degli uomini,
14 Fear came upon me, and shuddering, that terrified me to the bones.	14 Fui preso da timore, e da tremito, e tutte le mie ossa furon commosse:
15 Then a spirit passed before me, and the hair of my flesh stood up.	15 E passando davanti a me uno spirito, si arricciarono i peli della mia carne.
16 It paused, but its likeness I could not discern; a figure was before my eyes, and I heard a still voice:	16 Mi apparve uno, il volto del quale non era a me noto, un simulacro dinanzi agli occhi miei, e udii un suono come di aura leggera.
17 "Can a man be righteous as against God? Can a mortal be blameless against his Maker?	17 Forse un uomo messo al paragone con Dio sarà dichiarato giusto, o sarà egli più puro del suo faccitore?
18 Lo, he puts no trust in his servants, and with his angels he can find fault.	18 Ecco che quelli che a lui servono non hanno stabilità, e negli Angeli suoi trova egli difetto.
19 How much more with those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed more easily than the moth!	19 Quanto più quelli, che abitano case di fango, i quali hanno per fondamento la polvere, saran consunti come da verme?
20 Morning or evening they may be shattered; with no heed paid to it, they perish forever.	20 Dal mattino alla sera saranno troncati, e perché nissun ha intelligenza, periranno in eterno.
21 The pegs of their tent are plucked up; they die without knowing wisdom."	21 E quei, che tra loro primeggiano, saran tolti dal mondo: morranno, e non da sapienti.
