1 Then spoke Eliphaz the Temanite, who said:	1 Elifaz il Temanita prese la parola e disse:
2 If someone attempts a word with you, will you mind? For how can anyone refrain from speaking?	2 Se si tenta di parlarti, ti sarà forse gravoso? Ma chi può trattenere il discorso?
3 Behold, you have instructed many, and have made firm their feeble hands.	3 Ecco, tu hai istruito molti e a mani fiacche hai ridato vigore;
4 Your words have upheld the stumbler; you have strengthened his faltering knees.	4 le tue parole hanno sorretto chi vacillava e le ginocchia che si piegavano hai rafforzato.
5 But now that it comes to you, you are impatient; when it touches yourself, you are dismayed.	5 Ma ora questo accade a te e ti abbatti; capita a te e ne sei sconvolto.
6 Is not your piety a source of confidence, and your integrity of life your hope?	6 La tua pietà non era forse la tua fiducia e la tua condotta integra, la tua speranza?
7 Reflect now, what innocent person perishes? Since when are the upright destroyed?	7 Ricordalo: quale innocente è mai perito e quando mai furon distrutti gli uomini retti?
8 As I see it, those who plow for mischief and sow trouble, reap the same.	8 Per quanto io ho visto, chi coltiva iniquità, chi semina affanni, li raccoglie.
9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his wrath they are consumed.	9 A un soffio di Dio periscono e dallo sfogo della sua ira sono annientati.
10 Though the lion roars, though the king of beasts cries out, yet the teeth of the young lions are broken;	10 Il ruggito del leone e l'urlo del leopardo e i denti dei leoncelli sono frantumati.
11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.	11 Il leone è perito per mancanza di preda e i figli della leonessa sono stati dispersi.
12 For a word was stealthily brought to me, and my ear caught a whisper of it.	12 A me fu recata, furtiva, una parola e il mio orecchio ne percepì il lieve sussurro.
13 In my thoughts during visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,	13 Nei fantasmi, tra visioni notturne, quando grava sugli uomini il sonno,
14 Fear came upon me, and shuddering, that terrified me to the bones.	14 terrore mi prese e spavento e tutte le ossa mi fece tremare;
15 Then a spirit passed before me, and the hair of my flesh stood up.	15 un vento mi passò sulla faccia, e il pelo si drizzò sulla mia carne...
16 It paused, but its likeness I could not discern; a figure was before my eyes, and I heard a still voice:	16 Stava là ritto uno, di cui non riconobbi l'aspetto, un fantasma stava davanti ai miei occhi... Un sussurro..., e una voce mi si fece sentire:
17 "Can a man be righteous as against God? Can a mortal be blameless against his Maker?	17 "Può il mortale essere giusto davanti a Dio o innocente l'uomo davanti al suo creatore?
18 Lo, he puts no trust in his servants, and with his angels he can find fault.	18 Ecco, dei suoi servi egli non si fida e ai suoi angeli imputa difetti;
19 How much more with those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed more easily than the moth!	19 quanto più a chi abita case di fango, che nella polvere hanno il loro fondamento! Come tarlo sono schiacciati,
20 Morning or evening they may be shattered; with no heed paid to it, they perish forever.	20 annientati fra il mattino e la sera: senza che nessuno ci badi, periscono per sempre.
21 The pegs of their tent are plucked up; they die without knowing wisdom."	21 La funicella della loro tenda non viene forse strappata? Muoiono senza saggezza!".
