1 Then Zophar the Naamathite spoke and said:	1 Prese allora la parola Sofar di Naama, e disse:
2 and because of this I am disturbed. So now my thoughts provide me with an answer, and from my understanding a spirit gives me a reply.	2 « Per questo i miei pensieri si inseguono e la mia mente va dietro a molti.
3 A rebuke which puts me to shame I hear,	3 Starò a sentire la dottrina colla quale mi accusi e lo spirito della mia intelligenza mi suggerirà le risposte.
4 Do you not know this from olden time, since man was placed upon the earth,	4 Io so questo: che fin da principio, fin da quando l'uomo fu posto sulla terra,
5 That the triumph of the wicked is short and the joy of the impious but for a moment?	5 il trionfo degli empi è breve, e la gioia dell'ipocrita è d'un istante.
6 Though his pride mount up to the heavens and his head reach to the clouds,	6 Anche se la sua superbia s'innalzerà fino al cielo e la sua testa toccherà le nubi,
7 Yet he perishes forever like the fuel of his fire, and the onlookers say, "Where is he?"	7 alla fine perirà come letame, e quanti l'avevan veduto diranno: Dov'è?
8 Like a dream he takes flight and is not found again; he fades away like a vision of the night.	8 Volato via come sogno, non sarà più ritrovato, sparirà come visione notturna.
9 The eye which saw him does so no more; nor shall his dwelling again behold him.	9 L'occhio che lo mirava non lo vedrà più, non lo vedrà più la sua dimora.
10 and his hands shall yield up his riches.	10 I suoi figli saran consumati dalla miseria, e le sue mani gli renderanno il dolore meritato.
11 Though his frame is full of youthful vigor, this shall lie with him in the dust.	11 Le sue ossa saran piene dei vizi della sua giovinezza, i quali andranno a dormire con lui nella polvere.
12 Though wickedness is sweet in his mouth, and he hides it under his tongue,	12 Siccome il male è dolce alla sua bocca, egli lo nasconderà sotto la sua lingua,
13 Though he retains it and will not let it go but keeps it still within his mouth,	13 lo assaporerà senza lasciarlo, lo terrà nascosto nella sua gola.
14 Yet in his stomach the food shall turn; it shall be venom of asps inside him.	14 Ma il cibo nelle sue viscere si trasformerà interiormente in fiele di aspidi,
15 The riches he swallowed he shall disgorge; God shall compel his belly to disown them.	15 le ricchezze che ha divorate le vomiterà: Dio gliele caverà dal ventre.
16 The poison of asps he shall drink in; the viper's fangs shall slay him.	16 Egli succhierà il capo degli aspidi, e la lingua della vipera lo ucciderà.
17 He shall see no streams of oil, no torrents of honey or milk.	17 Non vedrà i ruscelli del fiume, nè i torrenti di miele e di latte.
18 Restoring his gains, he shall not enjoy them; though his wealth increases, he shall not rejoice.	18 Pagherà il fio di quanto ha fatto senza però essere consumato. Dovrà soffrire in proporzione delle sue macchinazioni,
19 Because he has oppressed the poor, and stolen a patrimony he had not built up,	19 perchè oppresse e spogliò i poveri, rapì la casa non edificata da lui.
20 Though he has known no quiet in his greed, his treasures shall not save him.	20 Il suo ventre non fu saziato, e quando avrà tutto quello che bramava, non potrà possederlo.
21 Therefore his prosperity shall not endure,	21 Nulla avanzò del suo cibo; nulla resterà dei suoi beni.
22 When he abounds to overflowing, he shall be brought into straits, and nought shall be left of his goods.	22 Quando sarà satollo si troverà nelle strettezze, smanierà, e tutti i dolori piomberanno sopra di lui.
23 God shall send against him the fury of his wrath and rain down his missiles of war upon him.	23 Che sia riempito il suo ventre, affinchè Dio scagli sopra di lui le collere del suo furore e piova sopra di lui i suoi fulmini!
24 Should he escape the iron weapon, the bow of bronze shall pierce him through;	24 Fuggirà le armi di ferro, e sarà trapassato dall'arco di rame.
25 The dart shall come out of his back; terrors shall fall upon him.	25 Tratto e cavato dal fodero, scintilla come folgore nella sua amarezza; vanno e vengono sopra di lui orribili (spettri).
26 Complete darkness is in store for him; the fire which shall consume him needs not to be fanned.	26 Tutte le tenebre son nascoste nei suoi segreti; un fuoco non acceso (dall'uomo) lo divorerà; giacerà afflitto e abbandonato nella sua tenda.
27 The heavens shall reveal his guilt, and the earth shall rise up against him.	27 I cieli riveleranno la sua iniquità, la terra insorgerà contro di lui.
28 The flood shall sweep away his house with the waters that run off in the day of God's anger.	28 I rampolli della sua casa saranno esposti, spariranno nel giorno del furore di Dio.
29 This is the portion of a wicked man, and the heritage appointed him by God.	29 Questa è la sorte da Dio riserbata all'empio, l'eredità riserbata alle sue azioni dal Signore ».
