1 Then Zophar the Naamathite spoke and said:	1 Allora Zofar di Naama prese la parola e disse:
2 and because of this I am disturbed. So now my thoughts provide me with an answer, and from my understanding a spirit gives me a reply.	2 "Per questo le mie riflessioni mi spingono a rispondere: a causa dell'agitazione che sento in me.
3 A rebuke which puts me to shame I hear,	3 Ho ascoltato una lezione umiliante, ma l'ispirazione del mio senno mi fa replicare.
4 Do you not know this from olden time, since man was placed upon the earth,	4 Non sai tu che da sempre, da quando l'uomo fu posto sulla terra,
5 That the triumph of the wicked is short and the joy of the impious but for a moment?	5 la felicità dei malvagi è effimera e la gioia degli empi dura un istante?
6 Though his pride mount up to the heavens and his head reach to the clouds,	6 Anche se la sua ambizione sale fino al cielo e il suo capo tocca le nubi,
7 Yet he perishes forever like the fuel of his fire, and the onlookers say, "Where is he?"	7 perirà per sempre, come il suo escremento, e chi l'ha visto dirà: "Dov'è?".
8 Like a dream he takes flight and is not found again; he fades away like a vision of the night.	8 Svanisce come un sogno e più non si trova; si dilegua come una visione notturna.
9 The eye which saw him does so no more; nor shall his dwelling again behold him.	9 L'occhio che lo vedeva, non lo scorge più; anche la sua dimora l'ha perduto di vista.
10 and his hands shall yield up his riches.	10 I suoi figli dovranno indennizzare i poveri e le loro mani restituiranno le sue ricchezze.
11 Though his frame is full of youthful vigor, this shall lie with him in the dust.	11 Le sue ossa ancor piene di vigore con lui giacciono nella polvere.
12 Though wickedness is sweet in his mouth, and he hides it under his tongue,	12 Se fu dolce il male alla sua bocca, se lo nascondeva sotto la lingua,
13 Though he retains it and will not let it go but keeps it still within his mouth,	13 se lo assapora, senza inghiottirlo ritenendolo contro il palato,
14 Yet in his stomach the food shall turn; it shall be venom of asps inside him.	14 il suo cibo si altera nelle sue viscere, divenendo un veleno di vipera dentro di lui.
15 The riches he swallowed he shall disgorge; God shall compel his belly to disown them.	15 I beni che aveva divorato, li rivomita; Dio glieli caccia fuori dal ventre.
16 The poison of asps he shall drink in; the viper's fangs shall slay him.	16 Succhiò veleno di aspide, una lingua di vipera lo uccide.
17 He shall see no streams of oil, no torrents of honey or milk.	17 Non vedrà più ruscelli d'olio, torrenti di miele e fior di latte.
18 Restoring his gains, he shall not enjoy them; though his wealth increases, he shall not rejoice.	18 Restituisce il frutto della fatica, senza averne goduto, e di ciò che guadagnò commerciando, non si rallegra.
19 Because he has oppressed the poor, and stolen a patrimony he had not built up,	19 Perché ha oppresso e lasciato in miseria i poveri e si appropriò di case che non costruì;
20 Though he has known no quiet in his greed, his treasures shall not save him.	20 perché il suo ventre non ha saputo accontentarsi, non poteva sottrarsi al suo appetito.
21 Therefore his prosperity shall not endure,	21 Niente sfuggiva alla sua voracità, perciò il suo benessere non è stabile.
22 When he abounds to overflowing, he shall be brought into straits, and nought shall be left of his goods.	22 Nel colmo dell'abbondanza si troverà in strettezze, tutti i colpi della sventura piomberanno su di lui.
23 God shall send against him the fury of his wrath and rain down his missiles of war upon him.	23 Quando starà per riempire il suo ventre, Dio scatenerà contro di lui l'ardore della sua ira e gli farà piovere addosso brace.
24 Should he escape the iron weapon, the bow of bronze shall pierce him through;	24 Se sfugge all'arma del ferro, lo trafiggerà l'arma di bronzo;
25 The dart shall come out of his back; terrors shall fall upon him.	25 estrae la freccia che esce dal suo corpo, e quando la punta abbandona il fegato, i terrori irrompono su di lui.
26 Complete darkness is in store for him; the fire which shall consume him needs not to be fanned.	26 Tutte le tenebre sono a lui riservate, lo divora un fuoco non acceso da uomo; esso consuma quanto è rimasto nella tenda.
27 The heavens shall reveal his guilt, and the earth shall rise up against him.	27 Il cielo rivela la sua iniquità e contro di lui si solleva la terra.
28 The flood shall sweep away his house with the waters that run off in the day of God's anger.	28 Un'alluvione travolge la sua casa, acque tumultuose nel giorno della sua ira.
29 This is the portion of a wicked man, and the heritage appointed him by God.	29 Questa è la sorte che Dio riserva all'uomo malvagio, la parte di eredità aggiudicatagli da Dio".
