1 Then Zophar the Naamathite spoke and said:	1 Sofar di Naamà prese a dire:
2 and because of this I am disturbed. So now my thoughts provide me with an answer, and from my understanding a spirit gives me a reply.	2 «Per questo i miei pensieri mi spingono a rispondere e c’è fretta dentro di me.
3 A rebuke which puts me to shame I hear,	3 Ho ascoltato un rimprovero per me offensivo, ma uno spirito, dal mio interno, mi spinge a replicare.
4 Do you not know this from olden time, since man was placed upon the earth,	4 Non sai tu che da sempre, da quando l’uomo fu posto sulla terra,
5 That the triumph of the wicked is short and the joy of the impious but for a moment?	5 il trionfo degli empi è breve e la gioia del perverso è di un istante?
6 Though his pride mount up to the heavens and his head reach to the clouds,	6 Anche se si innalzasse fino al cielo la sua statura e il suo capo toccasse le nubi,
7 Yet he perishes forever like the fuel of his fire, and the onlookers say, "Where is he?"	7 come il suo sterco sarebbe spazzato via per sempre e chi lo aveva visto direbbe: “Dov’è?”.
8 Like a dream he takes flight and is not found again; he fades away like a vision of the night.	8 Svanirà come un sogno, e non lo si troverà più, si dileguerà come visione notturna.
9 The eye which saw him does so no more; nor shall his dwelling again behold him.	9 L’occhio avvezzo a vederlo più non lo vedrà né più lo scorgerà la sua casa.
10 and his hands shall yield up his riches.	10 I suoi figli dovranno risarcire i poveri e le sue stesse mani restituiranno le sue ricchezze.
11 Though his frame is full of youthful vigor, this shall lie with him in the dust.	11 Le sue ossa erano piene di vigore giovanile, con lui ora giacciono nella polvere.
12 Though wickedness is sweet in his mouth, and he hides it under his tongue,	12 Se alla sua bocca fu dolce il male, se lo teneva nascosto sotto la sua lingua,
13 Though he retains it and will not let it go but keeps it still within his mouth,	13 assaporandolo senza inghiottirlo, se lo tratteneva in mezzo al suo palato,
14 Yet in his stomach the food shall turn; it shall be venom of asps inside him.	14 il suo cibo gli si guasterà nelle viscere, gli si trasformerà in veleno di vipere.
15 The riches he swallowed he shall disgorge; God shall compel his belly to disown them.	15 I beni che ha divorato, dovrà vomitarli, Dio glieli caccerà fuori dal ventre.
16 The poison of asps he shall drink in; the viper's fangs shall slay him.	16 Veleno di vipere ha succhiato, una lingua di aspide lo ucciderà.
17 He shall see no streams of oil, no torrents of honey or milk.	17 Non vedrà più ruscelli d’olio, fiumi di miele e fior di panna;
18 Restoring his gains, he shall not enjoy them; though his wealth increases, he shall not rejoice.	18 darà ad altri il frutto della sua fatica senza mangiarne, come non godrà del frutto del suo commercio,
19 Because he has oppressed the poor, and stolen a patrimony he had not built up,	19 perché ha oppresso e abbandonato i miseri, ha rubato case invece di costruirle;
20 Though he has known no quiet in his greed, his treasures shall not save him.	20 perché non ha saputo calmare il suo ventre, con i suoi tesori non si salverà.
21 Therefore his prosperity shall not endure,	21 Nulla è sfuggito alla sua voracità, per questo non durerà il suo benessere.
22 When he abounds to overflowing, he shall be brought into straits, and nought shall be left of his goods.	22 Nel colmo della sua abbondanza si troverà in miseria; ogni sorta di sciagura piomberà su di lui.
23 God shall send against him the fury of his wrath and rain down his missiles of war upon him.	23 Quando starà per riempire il suo ventre, Dio scaglierà su di lui la fiamma del suo sdegno e gli farà piovere addosso brace.
24 Should he escape the iron weapon, the bow of bronze shall pierce him through;	24 Se sfuggirà all’arma di ferro, lo trafiggerà l’arco di bronzo.
25 The dart shall come out of his back; terrors shall fall upon him.	25 Se estrarrà la freccia dalla schiena, una spada lucente gli squarcerà il fegato. Lo assaliranno i terrori;
26 Complete darkness is in store for him; the fire which shall consume him needs not to be fanned.	26 le tenebre più fitte gli saranno riservate. Lo divorerà un fuoco non attizzato da uomo, esso consumerà quanto è rimasto nella sua tenda.
27 The heavens shall reveal his guilt, and the earth shall rise up against him.	27 Riveleranno i cieli la sua iniquità e la terra si alzerà contro di lui.
28 The flood shall sweep away his house with the waters that run off in the day of God's anger.	28 Sparirà il raccolto della sua casa, tutto sarà disperso nel giorno della sua ira.
29 This is the portion of a wicked man, and the heritage appointed him by God.	29 Questa è la sorte che Dio riserva all’uomo malvagio, l’eredità che Dio gli ha decretato».
