1 Bileam sagte zu Balak: Errichte mir hier sieben Altäre und stell mir hier sieben junge Stiere und sieben Widder bereit!	1 And Balaam said to Balak, "Build for me here seven altars, and provide for me here seven bulls and seven rams."
2 Balak tat, was Bileam gesagt hatte, und Balak und Bileam brachten auf jedem Altar einen jungen Stier und einen Widder dar.	2 Balak did as Balaam had said; and Balak and Balaam offered on each altar a bull and a ram.
3 Dann sagte Bileam zu Balak: Bleib bei deinem Brandopfer stehen! Ich aber will beiseite gehen; vielleicht begegnet mir der Herr. Was er mich sehen lässt, werde ich dir mitteilen. Dann ging er auf die kahle Höhe.	3 And Balaam said to Balak, "Stand beside your burnt offering, and I will go; perhaps the LORD will come to meet me; and whatever he shows me I will tell you." And he went to a bare height.
4 Gott begegnete Bileam. Bileam sagte zu ihm: Ich habe sieben Altäre hergerichtet und auf jedem Altar einen jungen Stier und einen Widder dargebracht.	4 And God met Balaam; and Balaam said to him, "I have prepared the seven altars, and I have offered upon each altar a bull and a ram."
5 Da legte der Herr dem Bileam ein Wort in den Mund und sagte: Geh zu Balak zurück und sag ihm das und das!	5 And the LORD put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said, "Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak."
6 Bileam kehrte also zurück. Balak stand bei seinem Brandopfer und alle Hofleute Moabs waren bei ihm.	6 And he returned to him, and lo, he and all the princes of Moab were standing beside his burnt offering.
7 Da begann Bileam mit seinem Orakelspruch und sagte: Aus Aram führte mich Balak her, der König von Moab vom Ostgebirge: «Geh, verfluche mir Jakob! Geh, drohe Israel!»	7 And Balaam took up his discourse, and said, "From Aram Balak has brought me, the king of Moab from the eastern mountains: 'Come, curse Jacob for me, and come, denounce Israel!'
8 Doch wie soll ich verwünschen, wen Gott nicht verwünscht, wie soll ich drohen, wem Jahwe nicht droht?	8 How can I curse whom God has not cursed? How can I denounce whom the LORD has not denounced?
9 Denn vom Gipfel der Felsen sehe ich es, von den Höhen aus erblicke ich es: Dort, ein Volk, es wohnt für sich, es zählt sich nicht zu den Völkern.	9 For from the top of the mountains I see him, from the hills I behold him; lo, a people dwelling alone, and not reckoning itself among the nations!
10 Wer zählt Jakobs Menge, zahlreich wie Staub, wer die Zehntausende Israels? Oh, könnte ich den Tod der Gerechten sterben und wäre mein Ende dem seinen gleich.	10 Who can count the dust of Jacob, or number the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my end be like his!"
11 Da sagte Balak zu Bileam: Was hast du mir angetan? Ich habe dich geholt, damit du meine Feinde verwünschst, und nun hast du sie stattdessen gesegnet.	11 And Balak said to Balaam, "What have you done to me? I took you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have done nothing but bless them."
12 Bileam antwortete: Muß ich nicht das sagen, was der Herr mir in den Mund legt?	12 And he answered, "Must I not take heed to speak what the LORD puts in my mouth?"
13 Darauf sagte Balak zu ihm: Geh mit mir an einen anderen Ort, von wo aus du das Volk sehen kannst. Du wirst freilich nur den äußersten Rand sehen; ganz wirst du es nicht sehen. Von dort aus verwünsch es mir!	13 And Balak said to him, "Come with me to another place, from which you may see them; you shall see only the nearest of them, and shall not see them all; then curse them for me from there."
14 Er nahm ihn mit zum Späherfeld am Gipfel des Pisga, errichtete dort sieben Altäre und brachte auf jedem Altar einen jungen Stier und einen Widder dar.	14 And he took him to the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
15 Bileam sagte zu Balak: Bleib hier bei deinem Brandopfer stehen, ich aber will dort drüben auf die Begegnung mit dem Herrn warten.	15 Balaam said to Balak, "Stand here beside your burnt offering, while I meet the LORD yonder."
16 Der Herr begegnete Bileam, legte ihm ein Wort in den Mund und sagte: Kehr zu Balak zurück und sag ihm das und das!	16 And the LORD met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, "Return to Balak, and thus shall you speak."
17 Als Bileam zu Balak kam, stand er bei seinem Opfer und die Hofleute Moabs waren bei ihm. Balak fragte ihn: Was hat der Herr gesagt?	17 And he came to him, and, lo, he was standing beside his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said to him, "What has the LORD spoken?"
18 Da begann Bileam mit seinem Orakelspruch und sagte: Auf, Balak, höre, lausche mir, Sohn Zippors!	18 And Balaam took up his discourse, and said, "Rise, Balak, and hear; hearken to me, O son of Zippor:
19 Gott ist kein Mensch, der lügt, kein Menschenkind, das etwas bereut. Spricht er etwas und tut es dann nicht, sagt er etwas und hält es dann nicht?	19 God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should repent. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfil it?
20 Sieh her, ich habe es übernommen zu segnen; so muss ich segnen, ich kann's nicht widerrufen.	20 Behold, I received a command to bless: he has blessed, and I cannot revoke it.
21 Man erblickt kein Übel in Jakob, man sieht kein Unheil in Israel. Jahwe, sein Gott, ist bei ihm, seinem König jubelt Israel zu.	21 He has not beheld misfortune in Jacob; nor has he seen trouble in Israel. The LORD their God is with them, and the shout of a king is among them.
22 Gott hat sie aus Ägypten geführt. Er hat Hörner wie ein Wildstier.	22 God brings them out of Egypt; they have as it were the horns of the wild ox.
23 Zauberei wirkt nicht gegen Jakob, Beschwörung hilft nicht gegen Israel - [Jetzt sagt man zu Jakob, zu Israel: Was hat Gott getan?]	23 For there is no enchantment against Jacob, no divination against Israel; now it shall be said of Jacob and Israel, 'What has God wrought!'
24 ein Volk wie ein Löwe, der aufsteht, wie ein Raubtier, das sich erhebt. Es legt sich nicht hin, bevor es die Beute gefressen und das Blut der Erschlagenen getrunken hat.	24 Behold, a people! As a lioness it rises up and as a lion it lifts itself; it does not lie down till it devours the prey, and drinks the blood of the slain."
25 Da sagte Balak zu Bileam: Wenn du es schon nicht verwünschen willst, dann segne es doch wenigstens nicht!	25 And Balak said to Balaam, "Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all."
26 Bileam antwortete Balak: Habe ich es dir nicht gesagt: Ich muss alles tun, was der Herr mir befiehlt.	26 But Balaam answered Balak, "Did I not tell you, 'All that the LORD says, that I must do'?"
27 Darauf sagte Balak zu Bileam: Komm mit, ich will dich noch an einen anderen Ort mitnehmen. Vielleicht ist es Gott recht, dass du mir das Volk von dort aus verfluchst.	27 And Balak said to Balaam, "Come now, I will take you to another place; perhaps it will please God that you may curse them for me from there."
28 Balak nahm also Bileam mit auf den Gipfel des Pegor, der auf das Ödland herabschaut.	28 So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, that overlooks the desert.
29 Bileam sagte zu Balak: Bau mir hier sieben Altäre und stell mir hier sieben junge Stiere und sieben Widder bereit!	29 And Balaam said to Balak, "Build for me here seven altars, and provide for me here seven bulls and seven rams."
