1 An die Stelle des Mattatias trat sein Sohn Judas mit dem Beinamen der Makkabäer.	1 Then his son Judas, called Maccabeus, rose up in his stead.
2 Alle seine Brüder unterstützten ihn, wie auch alle, die sich seinem Vater angeschlossen hatten. Freudig kämpften sie für Israel.	2 And all his brethren helped him, and so did all they that held with his father, and they fought with cheerfulness the battle of Israel.
3 Er machte sein Volk weithin berühmt. Als Kriegsheld zog er seinen Panzer an, legte seine Waffen um und führte Krieg; sein Schwert war der Schutz seines Heeres.	3 So he gat his people great honour, and put on a breastplate as a giant, and girt his warlike harness about him, and he made battles, protecting the host with his sword.
4 Er glich im Kampf einem Löwen, einem jungen Löwen, der sich brüllend auf die Beute stürzt.	4 In his acts he was like a lion, and like a lion's whelp roaring for his prey.
5 Er verfolgte die Sünder und spürte sie auf; er vertilgte alle, die sein Volk verwirrten.	5 For He pursued the wicked, and sought them out, and burnt up those that vexed his people.
6 Aus Furcht vor ihm verloren die Sünder den Mut, alle Übeltäter vergingen vor Angst. Seiner Hand gelang die Befreiung.	6 Wherefore the wicked shrunk for fear of him, and all the workers of iniquity were troubled, because salvation prospered in his hand.
7 Vielen Königen schaffte er großen Verdruss, doch Jakob erfreute er mit seinen Taten. Sein Andenken sei ewig gepriesen.	7 He grieved also many kings, and made Jacob glad with his acts, and his memorial is blessed for ever.
8 Er zog durch die Städte Judäas, vernichtete die Frevler im Land und wandte Gottes Zorn von Israel ab.	8 Moreover he went through the cities of Juda, destroying the ungodly out of them, and turning away wrath from Israel:
9 Man sprach von ihm bis ans Ende der Welt; er sammelte wieder, was verloren war.	9 So that he was renowned unto the utmost part of the earth, and he received unto him such as were ready to perish.
10 Apollonius sammelte Truppen aus den fremden Völkern und dazu ein großes Heer aus Samarien, um gegen Israel Krieg zu führen.	10 Then Apollonius gathered the Gentiles together, and a great host out of Samaria, to fight against Israel.
11 Als Judas davon erfuhr, zog er ihm entgegen und besiegte und erschlug ihn. Viele kamen in diesem Kampf um; die Übrigen flohen.	11 Which thing when Judas perceived, he went forth to meet him, and so he smote him, and slew him: many also fell down slain, but the rest fled.
12 Danach holte man sich die Beute. Judas nahm das Schwert des Apollonius an sich; er gebrauchte es in jedem Kampf, solange er lebte.	12 Wherefore Judas took their spoils, and Apollonius' sword also, and therewith he fought all his life long.
13 Seron, der Befehlshaber der Streitkräfte in Syrien, hörte, dass Judas eine Gemeinschaft von Getreuen um sich geschart hatte, die mit ihm in den Kampf auszogen.	13 Now when Seron, a prince of the army of Syria, heard say that Judas had gathered unto him a multitude and company of the faithful to go out with him to war;
14 Da dachte er: Ich will mir einen Namen machen und im Reich berühmt werden: Ich werde einen Feldzug unternehmen gegen Judas und seine Leute, die das Wort des Königs verachten.	14 He said, I will get me a name and honour in the kingdom; for I will go fight with Judas and them that are with him, who despise the king's commandment.
15 Ein großes Heer ruchloser Männer schloss sich ihm an und zog zu seiner Unterstützung mit ihm hinauf, um an den Israeliten Rache zu nehmen.	15 So he made him ready to go up, and there went with him a mighty host of the ungodly to help him, and to be avenged of the children of Israel.
16 Er kam bis zur Steige von Bet-Horon. Judas zog ihm mit ganz wenigen Männern entgegen.	16 And when he came near to the going up of Bethhoron, Judas went forth to meet him with a small company:
17 Als diese das Heer sahen, das gegen sie ausgerückt war, sagten sie zu Judas: Wie können wir mit so wenigen Leuten gegen eine solche Übermacht kämpfen? Außerdem sind wir ganz erschöpft; denn wir haben heute noch nichts gegessen.	17 Who, when they saw the host coming to meet them, said unto Judas, How shall we be able, being so few, to fight against so great a multitude and so strong, seeing we are ready to faint with fasting all this day?
18 Judas antwortete: Es kann leicht sein, dass viele wenigen in die Hände fallen; für den Himmel macht es keinen Unterschied, ob er durch viele oder wenige Rettung bringt.	18 Unto whom Judas answered, It is no hard matter for many to be shut up in the hands of a few; and with the God of heaven it is all one, to deliver with a great multitude, or a small company:
19 Denn der Sieg im Kampf liegt nicht an der Größe des Heeres, sondern an der Kraft, die vom Himmel kommt.	19 For the victory of battle standeth not in the multitude of an host; but strength cometh from heaven.
20 Diese Leute da ziehen voll Hochmut und Bosheit gegen uns in den Kampf, um uns mit unseren Frauen und Kindern auszurotten und unsere Habe zu plündern.	20 They come against us in much pride and iniquity to destroy us, and our wives and children, and to spoil us:
21 Wir aber kämpfen für unser Leben und für unsere Gesetze.	21 But we fight for our lives and our laws.
22 Der Himmel wird sie vor unseren Augen vernichtend schlagen. Darum habt keine Angst vor ihnen!	22 Wherefore the Lord himself will overthrow them before our face: and as for you, be ye not afraid of them.
23 Kaum hatte er das gesagt, da stürzte er sich überraschend auf die Feinde und Seron und sein Heer wurden vor seinen Augen aufgerieben.	23 Now as soon as he had left off speaking, he leapt suddenly upon them, and so Seron and his host was overthrown before him.
24 Sie verfolgten ihn von der Steige von Bet-Horon bis in die Ebene hinab und es fielen gegen achthundert Mann von ihnen; die Übrigen flohen ins Land der Philister.	24 And they pursued them from the going down of Bethhoron unto the plain, where were slain about eight hundred men of them; and the residue fled into the land of the Philistines.
25 Da begann man, sich vor Judas und seinen Brüdern zu fürchten, Schrecken befiel die Völker ringsum.	25 Then began the fear of Judas and his brethren, and an exceeding great dread, to fall upon the nations round about them:
26 Selbst der König hörte seinen Namen; die ganze Welt erzählte von den Kämpfen des Judas.	26 Insomuch as his fame came unto the king, and all nations talked of the battles of Judas.
27 Als König Antiochus von diesen Ereignissen hörte, wurde er sehr zornig. Er schickte Boten aus und zog alle Streitkräfte seines Reiches zusammen: ein gewaltig großes Heer.	27 Now when king Antiochus heard these things, he was full of indignation: wherefore he sent and gathered together all the forces of his realm, even a very strong army.
28 Dann öffnete er seine Schatzkammer, gab seinen Truppen Sold für ein Jahr und befahl ihnen, sich für jeden Fall bereitzuhalten.	28 He opened also his treasure, and gave his soldiers pay for a year, commanding them to be ready whensoever he should need them.
29 Doch merkte er, dass das Geld im Staatsschatz ausging. Auch kamen nur noch wenig Steuern aus dem Land ein, weil er Streit und Unglück über das Land gebracht hatte, als er die uralten Bräuche aufhob.	29 Nevertheless, when he saw that the money of his treasures failed and that the tributes in the country were small, because of the dissension and plague, which he had brought upon the land in taking away the laws which had been of old time;
30 Er war also besorgt, dass er, wie es schon einige Male vorgekommen war, nicht mehr so aufwendig wie früher leben und keine Geschenke mehr verteilen könnte. Er war nämlich bisher besonders freigebig gewesen, mehr als die Könige vor ihm.	30 He feared that he should not be able to bear the charges any longer, nor to have such gifts to give so liberally as he did before: for he had abounded above the kings that were before him.
31 In seiner großen Verlegenheit beschloss er, nach Persien zu ziehen, um in jenen Provinzen die Steuern einzutreiben und auf diese Weise viel Geld zusammenzubringen.	31 Wherefore, being greatly perplexed in his mind, he determined to go into Persia, there to take the tributes of the countries, and to gather much money.
32 Als seinen Statthalter über das Gebiet zwischen dem Eufrat und der Grenze Ägyptens ließ er Lysias zurück, einen Mann, der sehr angesehen war und aus königlicher Familie stammte.	32 So he left Lysias, a nobleman, and one of the blood royal, to oversee the affairs of the king from the river Euphrates unto the borders of Egypt:
33 Ihm übertrug er auch bis zu seiner Rückkehr die Erziehung seines Sohnes Antiochus.	33 And to bring up his son Antiochus, until he came again.
34 Ferner überließ er ihm die Hälfte der Truppen und die Kriegselefanten und gab ihm Anweisungen über alle anstehenden Maßnahmen, auch gegen die Bewohner von Judäa und Jerusalem.	34 Moreover he delivered unto him the half of his forces, and the elephants, and gave him charge of all things that he would have done, as also concerning them that dwelt in Juda and Jerusalem:
35 Er sagte, er solle ein Heer gegen Israel schicken, um seine Macht zu brechen, um alles zu vernichten, was von Jerusalem noch übrig sei, und sogar die Erinnerung an die Juden auslöschen.	35 To wit, that he should send an army against them, to destroy and root out the strength of Israel, and the remnant of Jerusalem, and to take away their memorial from that place;
36 Er solle Menschen aus fremden Völkern in ihrem ganzen Gebiet ansiedeln und das Land an sie verlosen.	36 And that he should place strangers in all their quarters, and divide their land by lot.
37 Die andere Hälfte der Truppen nahm der König mit sich; er brach im Jahr 147 von seiner Hauptstadt Antiochia auf, überquerte den Eufrat und marschierte in die östlichen Provinzen.	37 So the king took the half of the forces that remained, and departed from Antioch, his royal city, the hundred forty and seventh year; and having passed the river Euphrates, he went through the high countries.
38 Lysias aber wählte Ptolemäus aus, den Sohn des Dorymenes, außerdem Nikanor und Gorgias, tapfere Männer, die zu den Freunden des Königs gehörten,	38 Then Lysias chose Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes, Nicanor, and Gorgias, mighty men of the king's friends:
39 und schickte sie mit vierzigtausend Mann und siebentausend Reitern auf den Weg. Sie sollten in Judäa einmarschieren und das Land verwüsten, wie es der König befohlen hatte.	39 And with them he sent forty thousand footmen, and seven thousand horsemen, to go into the land of Juda, and to destroy it, as the king commanded.
40 Sie brachen also mit ihrem ganzen Heer auf, zogen bis Emmaus und schlugen dort in der Ebene ihr Lager auf.	40 So they went forth with all their power, and came and pitched by Emmaus in the plain country.
41 Als die Händler in jener Gegend von ihnen hörten, kamen sie mit viel Silber und Gold und mit Fußfesseln zum Lager, um die Israeliten als Sklaven aufzukaufen. Dem Heer schlossen sich auch noch Truppen aus Syrien und aus dem Land der Philister an.	41 And the merchants of the country, hearing the fame of them, took silver and gold very much, with servants, and came into the camp to buy the children of Israel for slaves: a power also of Syria and of the land of the Philistines joined themselves unto them.
42 Als Judas und seine Brüder sahen, dass großes Unheil drohte und die feindlichen Truppen schon auf ihrem Gebiet ihr Lager aufschlugen, und als sie erfuhren, welche Befehle der König gegeben hatte, um das Volk völlig zu vernichten,	42 Now when Judas and his brethren saw that miseries were multiplied, and that the forces did encamp themselves in their borders: for they knew how the king had given commandment to destroy the people, and utterly abolish them;
43 sagten sie zueinander: Wir wollen die Trümmer unseres Volkes wiederaufbauen und für unser Volk und das Heiligtum kämpfen.	43 They said one to another, Let us restore the decayed fortune of our people, and let us fight for our people and the sanctuary.
44 Und sie kamen zusammen, um sich zum Kampf zu rüsten, aber auch, um zu beten und Gnade und Mitleid zu erflehen.	44 Then was the congregation gathered together, that they might be ready for battle, and that they might pray, and ask mercy and compassion.
45 Jerusalem war menschenleer wie eine Wüste, von den Kindern der Stadt ging keines mehr ein oder aus. Die heilige Stätte war entweiht. Ausländer hausten in der Burg, sie war ein Gasthaus für fremde Völker. Die Freude war aus Jakob verschwunden, Flöte und Harfe waren verstummt.	45 Now Jerusalem lay void as a wilderness, there was none of her children that went in or out: the sanctuary also was trodden down, and aliens kept the strong hold; the heathen had their habitation in that place; and joy was taken from Jacob, and the pipe with the harp ceased.
46 Sie versammelten sich also und gingen nach Mizpa. Das ist ein Ort, der Jerusalem gegenüber liegt und an dem die Israeliten früher eine Gebetsstätte hatten.	46 Wherefore the Israelites assembled themselves together, and came to Maspha, over against Jerusalem; for in Maspha was the place where they prayed aforetime in Israel.
47 Sie fasteten an jenem Tag, zogen Bußkleider an, streuten sich Staub auf das Haupt und zerrissen ihre Gewänder.	47 Then they fasted that day, and put on sackcloth, and cast ashes upon their heads, and rent their clothes,
48 Sie breiteten die Gesetzesrolle aus, um eine Entscheidung zu erhalten, so wie die fremden Völker ihre Götterbilder befragen.	48 And laid open the book of the law, wherein the heathen had sought to paint the likeness of their images.
49 Auch brachten sie die priesterlichen Gewänder, die Erstlingsfrüchte und den Zehnten herbei, befahlen den Nasiräern, deren Zeit abgelaufen war, sich zu versammeln,	49 They brought also the priests' garments, and the firstfruits, and the tithes: and the Nazarites they stirred up, who had accomplished their days.
50 und schrien laut zum Himmel: Was sollen wir mit diesen Dingen und diesen Menschen tun, wo sollen wir sie hinbringen?	50 Then cried they with a loud voice toward heaven, saying, What shall we do with these, and whither shall we carry them away?
51 Man entweiht und schändet dein Heiligtum; deine Priester leben in Trauer und Elend.	51 For thy sanctuary is trodden down and profaned, and thy priests are in heaviness, and brought low.
52 Sieh her: Man führt fremde Völker zusammen, um uns auszurotten. Du weißt, was sie mit uns vorhaben.	52 And lo, the heathen are assembled together against us to destroy us: what things they imagine against us, thou knowest.
53 Wie können wir ihrem Angriff standhalten, wenn du uns nicht hilfst?	53 How shall we be able to stand against them, except thou, O God, be our help?
54 Dabei ließen sie die Trompeten blasen und schrien laut.	54 Then sounded they with trumpets, and cried with a loud voice.
55 Danach setzte Judas Heerführer ein, jeweils über tausend, hundert, fünfzig und zehn.	55 And after this Judas ordained captains over the people, even captains over thousands, and over hundreds, and over fifties, and over tens.
56 Alle, die (kurz zuvor) ein Haus gebaut, eine Frau geheiratet oder Weinberge angelegt hatten oder die Angst hatten, ließ er nach Hause zurückkehren, wie es das Gesetz vorschreibt.	56 But as for such as were building houses, or had betrothed wives, or were planting vineyards, or were fearful, those he commanded that they should return, every man to his own house, according to the law.
57 Danach brach das Heer auf und schlug südlich von Emmaus sein Lager auf.	57 So the camp removed, and pitched upon the south side of Emmaus.
58 Judas sagte: Legt eure Waffen an und seid tapfer! Macht euch bereit, morgen früh mit diesen fremden Völkern zu kämpfen, die man zusammengeführt hat, um uns und unser Heiligtum zu vernichten.	58 And Judas said, arm yourselves, and be valiant men, and see that ye be in readiness against the morning, that ye may fight with these nations, that are assembled together against us to destroy us and our sanctuary:
59 Denn wir wollen lieber im Kampf fallen, als zusehen, wie Unglück über unser Volk und über das Heiligtum kommt.	59 For it is better for us to die in battle, than to behold the calamities of our people and our sanctuary.
60 Doch wie der Himmel will, so soll es geschehen.	60 Nevertheless, as the will of God is in heaven, so let him do.
