Genesis 42

EINHEITSUBERSETZUNG BIBEL	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Als Jakob erfuhr, dass es in Ägypten Getreide zu kaufen gab, sagte er zu seinen Söhnen: Warum schaut ihr einander so an?	1 Jacob, seeing that there were supplies to be had in Egypt, said to his sons, 'Why do you keep staringat one another?
2 Und er sagte: Ich habe gehört, dass es in Ägypten Getreide zu kaufen gibt. Zieht hin und kauft dort für uns Getreide, damit wir am Leben bleiben und nicht sterben müssen.	2 I hear', he said, 'that there are supplies in Egypt. Go down and procure some for us there, so that wemay survive and not die.'
3 Zehn Brüder Josefs zogen also hinunter, um in Ägypten Getreide zu kaufen.	3 So ten of Joseph's brothers went down to procure grain in Egypt.
4 Benjamin, den Bruder Josefs, ließ Jakob nicht mit seinen Brüdern ziehen, denn er dachte, es könnte ihm ein Unglück zustoßen.	4 But Jacob did not send Joseph's brother Benjamin with his brothers. 'Nothing must happen to him,' hethought.
5 Die Söhne Israels kamen also mitten unter anderen, die auch gekommen waren, um Getreide zu kaufen; denn Hungersnot herrschte in Kanaan.	5 Thus the sons of Israel were among the other people who came to get supplies, there being famine inCanaan.
6 Josef verwaltete das Land. Er war es, der allen Leuten im Lande Getreide verkaufte. So kamen Josefs Brüder und warfen sich vor ihm mit dem Gesicht zur Erde nieder.	6 It was Joseph, as the man in authority over the country, who al ocated the rations to the entirepopulation. So Joseph's brothers went and bowed down before him, their faces touching the ground.
7 Als Josef seine Brüder sah, erkannte er sie. Aber er gab sich ihnen nicht zu erkennen, sondern fuhr sie barsch an. Er fragte sie: Wo kommt ihr her? Aus Kanaan, um Brotgetreide zu kaufen, sagten sie.	7 As soon as Joseph saw his brothers he recognised them. But he did not make himself known to them,and he spoke harshly to them. 'Where have you come from?' he asked. 'From Canaan to get food,' they replied.
8 Josef hatte seine Brüder erkannt, sie aber hatten ihn nicht erkannt.	8 Now when Joseph recognised his brothers, but they did not recognise him,
9 Josef erinnerte sich an das, was er von ihnen geträumt hatte, und sagte: Spione seid ihr. Um nachzusehen, wo das Land eine schwache Stelle hat, seid ihr gekommen.	9 Joseph remembered the dreams he had had about them, and said to them, 'You are spies. You havecome to discover the country's weak points.'
10 Sie antworteten ihm: Nein, Herr. Um Brotgetreide zu kaufen, sind deine Knechte gekommen.	10 'No, my lord,' they said, 'your servants have come to get food.
11 Wir alle sind Söhne ein und desselben Vaters. Ehrliche Leute sind wir, deine Knechte sind keine Spione.	11 We are al sons of the same man. We are honest men, your servants are not spies.'
12 Er aber entgegenete ihnen: Nichts da, ihr seid nur gekommen, um nachzusehen, wo das Land eine schwache Stelle hat.	12 'Oh no,' he replied, 'you have come to discover the country's weak points.'
13 Da sagten sie: Wir, deine Knechte, waren zwölf Brüder, Söhne ein und desselben Mannes in Kanaan. Der Jüngste ist bei unserem Vater geblieben und einer ist nicht mehr.	13 'Your servants were twelve brothers,' they said, 'sons of the same man in Canaan, but the youngestis at present with our father, and the other one is no more.'
14 Josef aber sagte zu ihnen: Es bleibt dabei, wie ich euch gesagt habe: Spione seid ihr.	14 To which Joseph retorted, 'It is as I said, you are spies.
15 So wird man euch auf die Probe stellen: Beim Leben des Pharao! Ihr sollt von hier nicht eher loskommen, bis auch euer jüngster Bruder da ist.	15 This is the test you are to undergo: as sure as Pharaoh lives you shal not leave unless youryoungest brother comes here.
16 Schickt einen von euch hin! Er soll euren Bruder holen; ihr anderen aber werdet in Haft genommen. So wird man euer Gerede überprüfen und feststellen können, ob ihr die Wahrheit gesagt habt oder nicht. Beim Leben des Pharao, ja, Spione seid ihr.	16 Send one of your number to fetch your brother; you others will remain under arrest, so that yourstatements can be tested to see whether or not you are honest. If not, then as sure as Pharaoh lives you arespies.'
17 Dann ließ er sie für drei Tage in Haft nehmen.	17 Whereupon, he put them al into custody for three days.
18 Am dritten Tag sagte Josef zu ihnen: Tut Folgendes und ihr werdet am Leben bleiben, denn ich fürchte Gott:	18 On the third day Joseph said to them, 'Do this and you will live, for I am a man who fears God.
19 Wenn ihr ehrliche Leute seid, soll einer von euch Brüdern in dem Gefängnis zurückgehalten werden, in dem ihr in Haft gewesen seid. Ihr anderen aber geht und bringt das gekaufte Getreide heim, um den Hunger eurer Familien zu stillen.	19 If you are honest men, let one of your brothers be detained where you are imprisoned; the rest ofyou, go and take supplies home for your starving families.
20 Euren jüngsten Bruder aber schafft mir herbei, damit sich eure Worte als wahr erweisen und ihr nicht sterben müsst. So machten sie es.	20 But you must bring your youngest brother back to me; in this way, what you have said wil beverified, and you wil not have to die!' And this is what they did.
21 Sie sagten zueinander: Ach ja, wir sind an unserem Bruder schuldig geworden. Wir haben zugesehen, wie er sich um sein Leben ängstigte. Als er uns um Erbarmen anflehte, haben wir nicht auf ihn gehört. Darum ist nun diese Bedrängnis über uns gekommen.	21 And they said to one another, 'Clearly, we are being punished for what we did to our brother. Wesaw his deep misery when he pleaded with us, but we would not listen, and now this misery has come home tous.'
22 Ruben entgegnete ihnen: Habe ich euch nicht gesagt: Versündigt euch nicht an dem Kind! Ihr aber habt nicht gehört. Nun wird für sein Blut von uns Rechenschaft gefordert.	22 Reuben retorted to them, 'Did I not tel you not to wrong the boy? But you would not listen. Nowcomes the accounting.'
23 Sie aber ahnten nicht, dass Josef zuhörte, denn er bediente sich im Gespräch mit ihnen eines Dolmetschers.	23 They did not know that Joseph understood, because there was an interpreter between them.
24 Er wandte sich von ihnen ab und weinte. Als er sich ihnen wieder zuwandte und abermals mit ihnen redete, ließ er aus ihrer Mitte Simeon festnehmen und vor ihren Augen fesseln.	24 He turned away from them and wept. When he was able to speak to them again, he chose Simeonout of their number and had him bound while they looked on.
25 Josef befahl dann, ihre Behälter mit Getreide zu füllen, einem jeden von ihnen das Geld wieder in den Sack zurückzulegen und ihnen für die Reise Verpflegung mitzugeben. So geschah es.	25 Joseph gave the order to fil their panniers with grain, to put back each man's money in his sack, andto give them provisions for the journey. This was done for them.
26 Sie luden das Getreide auf ihre Esel und zogen fort.	26 Then they loaded their supplies on their donkeys and went away.
27 Als einer seinen Sack öffnete, um in der Herberge seinen Esel zu füttern, sah er sein Geld. Es lag in seinem Getreidesack ganz oben.	27 But when they camped for the night, one of them opened his sack to give his donkey some fodderand saw his money -- there it was in the mouth of his sack.
28 Er sagte zu seinen Brüdern: Man hat mir mein Geld zurückgegeben. Seht, hier ist es in meinem Getreidesack. Da verließ sie der Mut und sie sagten zitternd zueinander: Was hat uns Gott da angetan?	28 He said to his brothers, 'My money has been put back; here it is, in my sack!' Their hearts sank, andthey looked at one another in panic, saying, 'What is this that God has done to us?'
29 Sie kamen zu ihrem Vater Jakob nach Kanaan und berichteten ihm alles, was ihnen zugestoßen war:	29 Returning to their father Jacob in Canaan, they gave him a ful report of what had happened to them,
30 Jener Mann, der Herr des Landes, hat uns barsch angefahren und uns für Leute gehalten, die das Land ausspionieren.	30 'The man who is lord of the country spoke harshly to us, accusing us of spying on the country.
31 Wir sagten ihm: Ehrliche Leute sind wir und keine Spione.	31 We told him, "We are honest men, we are not spies.
32 Wir waren zwölf Brüder, Söhne ein und desselben Vaters. Einer ist nicht mehr und der Jüngste ist bei unserem Vater in Kanaan geblieben.	32 We were twelve brothers, sons of the same father. One of us is no more, and the youngest is atpresent with our father in Canaan."
33 Jener Mann aber, der Herr des Landes, sagte zu uns: Daran will ich erkennen, ob ihr ehrliche Leute seid: Lasst einen von euch Brüdern bei mir zurück, nehmt das Getreide, das den Hunger eurer Familien stillen soll, geht	33 But the man who is lord of the country said to us, "This is how I shal know whether you are honest:leave one of your brothers with me. Take supplies for your starving families and be gone,
34 und schafft mir euren jüngsten Bruder herbei! So werde ich erfahren, dass ihr keine Spione, sondern ehrliche Leute seid. Ich gebe euch dann euren Bruder heraus und ihr dürft euch frei im Land bewegen.	34 but bring me back your youngest brother and then I shall know that you are not spies but honestmen. Then I shal give your brother back to you and you wil be free to move about the country." '
35 Während sie nun ihre Säcke leerten, stellten sie fest: Jeder hatte seinen Geldbeutel im Sack. Als sie und ihr Vater ihre Geldbeutel sahen, bekamen sie Angst.	35 As they emptied their sacks, each discovered his bag of money in his sack. On seeing their bags ofmoney they were afraid, and so was their father.
36 Ihr Vater Jakob sagte zu ihnen: Ihr bringt mich um meine Kinder. Josef ist nicht mehr, Simeon ist nicht mehr und Benjamin wollt ihr mir auch noch nehmen. Nichts bleibt mir erspart.	36 Then their father Jacob said to them, 'You are robbing me of my children; Joseph is no more;Simeon is no more; and now you want to take Benjamin. I bear the brunt of al this!'
37 Da sagte Ruben zu seinem Vater: Meine beiden Söhne magst du umbringen, wenn ich ihn dir nicht zurückbringe. Vertrau ihn meiner Hand an; ich bringe ihn dir wieder zurück.	37 Then Reuben said to his father, 'You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring him back to you.Put him in my care and I will bring him back to you.'
38 Nein, sagte er, mein Sohn wird nicht mit euch hinunterziehen. Denn sein Bruder ist schon tot, nur er allein ist noch da. Stößt ihm auf dem Weg, den ihr geht, ein Unglück zu, dann bringt ihr mein graues Haar vor Kummer in die Unterwelt.	38 But he replied, 'My son is not going down with you, for now his brother is dead he is the only one left.If any harm came to him on the journey you are undertaking, you would send my white head down to Sheol withgrief!'
