DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Unto the end, a psalm for David.1 For the leader. A psalm of David.
O God, be not thou silent in thy praise: for the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful man is opened against me.2 O God, whom I praise, do not be silent, for wicked and treacherous mouths attack me. They speak against me with lying tongues;
They have spoken against with deceitful tongues; and they have compassed me about with words of hatred; and have fought against me without cause.3 with hateful words they surround me, attacking me without cause.
Instead of making me a return of love, they detracted me: but I gave myself to prayer.4 In return for my love they slander me, even though I prayed for them.
And they repaid me evil for good: and hatred for my love.5 They repay me evil for good, hatred for my love. My enemies say of me:
Set thou the sinner over him: and may the devil stand at his right hand.6 "Find a lying witness, an accuser to stand by his right hand,
When he is judged, may he go out condemned; and may his prayer be turned to sin.7 That he may be judged and found guilty, that his plea may be in vain.
May his days be few: and his bishopric let another take.8 May his days be few; may another take his office.
May his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.9 May his children be fatherless, his wife, a widow.
Let his children be carried about vagabonds, and beg; and let them be cast out of their dwellings.10 May his children be vagrant beggars, driven from their hovels.
May the userer search all his substance: and let strangers plunder his labours.11 May the usurer snare all he owns, strangers plunder all he earns.
May there be none to help him: nor none to pity his fatherless offspring.12 May no one treat him kindly or pity his fatherless children.
May his posterity be cut off; in one generation may his name be blotted out.13 May his posterity be destroyed, his name cease in the next generation.
May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered in the sight of the Lord: and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.14 May the LORD remember his fathers' guilt; his mother's sin not be canceled.
May they be before the lord continually, and let the memory of them perish from the earth:15 May their guilt be always before the LORD, till their memory is banished from the earth,
because he remembered not to show mercy,16 For he did not remember to show kindness, but hounded the wretched poor and brought death to the brokenhearted.
But persecuted the poor man and the beggar; and the broken in heart, to put him to death.17 He loved cursing; may it come upon him; he hated blessing; may none come to him.
And he loved cursing, and it shall come unto him: and he would not have blessing, and it shall be far from him. And he put on cursing, like a garment: and it went in like water into his entrails, and like oil in his bones.18 May cursing clothe him like a robe; may it enter his belly like water, seep into his bones like oil.
May it be unto him like a garment which covereth him; and like a girdle with which he is girded continually.19 May it be near as the clothes he wears, as the belt always around him."
This is the work of them who detract me before the Lord; and who speak evils against my soul.20 May the LORD bring all this upon my accusers, upon those who speak evil against me.
But thou, O Lord, do with for thy names sake: because thy mercy is sweet. Do thou deliver me.21 But you, LORD, my God, deal kindly with me for your name's sake; in your great mercy rescue me.
for I am poor and needy, and my heart is troubled within me.22 For I am sorely in need; my heart is pierced within me.
I am taken away like the shadow when it declineth: and I am shaken off as locusts.23 Like a lengthening shadow I near my end, all but swept away like the locust.
My knees are weakened through fasting: and my flesh is changed for oil.24 My knees totter from fasting; my flesh has wasted away.
And I am become a reproach to them: they saw me and they shaked their heads,25 I have become a mockery to them; when they see me, they shake their heads.
Help me, O Lord my God; save me according to thy mercy.26 Help me, LORD, my God; save me in your kindness.
And let them know that this is thy hand: and that thou, O Lord, hast done it.27 Make them know this is your hand, that you, LORD, have acted.
They will curse and thou will bless: let them that rise up against me be confounded: but thy servant shall rejoice.28 Though they curse, may you bless; shame my foes, that your servant may rejoice.
Let them that detract me be clothed with shame: and let them be covered with the their confusion as with a double cloak.29 Clothe my accusers with disgrace; make them wear shame like a mantle.
I will give great thanks to the Lord with my mouth: and in the midst of many I will praise him.30 I will give fervent thanks to the LORD; before all I will praise my God.
Because he hath stood at the right hand of the poor, to save my soul from persecutors31 For God stands at the right hand of the poor to defend them against unjust accusers.
