DIODATI	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 ED Elihu proseguì a parlare, e disse:	1 Then Elihu continued and said:
2 Voi savi, udite i miei ragionamenti; E voi intendenti, porgetemi l’orecchio.	2 Hear, O wise men, my discourse, and you that have knowledge, hear me!
3 Perciocchè l’orecchio esamina i ragionamenti, Come il palato assapora ciò che si deve mangiare.	3 For the ear tests words, as the taste does food.
4 Proponiamoci la dirittura, Giudichiamo fra noi che cosa sia bene.	4 Let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn between us what is good.
5 Conciossiachè Giobbe abbia detto: Io son giusto; Iddio mi ha tolta la mia ragione.	5 For Job has said, "I am innocent, but God has taken what is my due.
6 Mentirei io intorno alla mia ragione? La saetta, con la quale son ferito, è dolorosissima, Senza che vi sia misfatto in me.	6 Notwithstanding my right I am set at nought; in my wound the arrow rankles, sinless though I am."
7 Quale è l’uomo simile a Giobbe, Che beve lo scherno come acqua?	7 What man is like Job? He drinks in blasphemies like water,
8 E che cammina in compagnia con gli operatori d’iniquità, E va con gli uomini empi?	8 Keeps company with evildoers and goes along with wicked men,
9 Perciocchè egli ha detto: L’uomo non fa niun profitto Di rendersi grato a Dio	9 When he says, "It profits a man nought that he is pleasing to God."
10 Perciò, uomini di senno, ascoltatemi; Tolga Iddio che vi sia empietà in Dio, O perversità nell’Onnipotente.	10 Therefore, men of understanding, hearken to me: far be it from God to do wickedness; far from the Almighty to do wrong!
11 Perciocchè egli rende all’uomo secondo l’opera sua, E fa trovare a ciascuno secondo la sua via.	11 Rather, he requites men for their conduct, and brings home to a man his way of life.
12 Sì veramente Iddio non opera empiamente, E l’Onnipotente non perverte la ragione.	12 Surely, God cannot act wickedly, the Almighty cannot violate justice.
13 Chi gli ha commesso il governo della terra? E chi gli ha imposta la cura del mondo tutto intiero?	13 Who gave him government over the earth, or who else set all the land in its place?
14 Se egli ponesse mente all’uomo, Egli ritrarrebbe a sè il suo alito, ed il suo soffio;	14 If he were to take back his spirit to himself, withdraw to himself his breath,
15 Ogni carne insieme trapasserebbe, E l’uomo ritornerebbe nella polvere	15 All flesh would perish together, and man would return to the dust.
16 Se pur tu hai del senno, ascolta questo; Porgi l’orecchio alla voce de’ miei ragionamenti.	16 Now, do you, O Job, hear this! Hearken to the words I speak!
17 Di vero, colui che odia la dirittura signoreggerebbe egli? E condannerai tu colui che è sommamente giusto?	17 Can an enemy of justice indeed be in control, or will you condemn the supreme Just One,
18 Direbbesi egli ad un re: Scellerato? E a’ principi: Empio?	18 Who says to a king, "You are worthless!" and to nobles, "You are wicked!"
19 Quanto meno a colui che non ha riguardo alla qualità de’ principi, Ed appo cui non è riconosciuto il possente, Per essere antiposto al povero, Perchè essi tutti sono opera delle sue mani?	19 Who neither favors the person of princes, nor respects the rich more than the poor? For they are all the work of his hands;
20 Essi muoiono in un momento, E di mezza notte tutto un popolo è conquassato, e perisce; E il potente è tolto via senza opera di mani.	20 in a moment they die, even at midnight. He brings on nobles, and takes them away, removing the powerful without lifting a hand;
21 Perciocchè gli occhi suoi son sopra le vie dell’uomo, Ed egli vede tutti i passi di esso.	21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he beholds all his steps.
22 Non vi è oscurità, nè ombra di morte alcuna, Ove si possan nascondere gli operatori d’iniquità.	22 There is no darkness so dense that evildoers can hide in it.
23 Perciocchè Iddio non ha più riguardo all’uomo, Quando esso è per venire in giudicio davanti a lui.	23 For he forewarns no man of his time to come before God in judgment.
24 Egli fiacca i possenti incomprensibilmente, E ne costituisce altri in luogo loro.	24 Without a trial he breaks the mighty, and sets others in their stead,
25 Perciò, conoscendo egli le opere loro, Nel girar d’una notte son fiaccati,	25 Therefore he discerns their works; he turns at night and crushes them.
26 Egli li sbatte come empi, In luogo di molti spettatori;
27 Perciocchè si son rivolti indietro da lui, E non hanno considerate tutte le sue vie;	27 Because they turned away from him and heeded none of his ways,
28 Facendo pervenire infino a lui il grido del povero, E facendogli udire lo strido degli afflitti.	28 But caused the cries of the poor to reach him, so that he heard the plea of the afflicted.
29 Se egli rimanda in pace, chi condannerà? E se nasconde la sua faccia, chi lo riguarderà? O sia una nazione intiera, o un uomo solo;	29 If he remains tranquil, who then can condemn? If he hides his face, who then can behold him?
30 Acciocchè l’uomo profano non regni più E che il popolo non sia più tenuto ne’ lacci
31 Certo ei ti si conveniva indirizzarti a Dio, dicendo: Io ho portato la pena; io non peccherò più.	31 When anyone says to God, "I was misguided; I will offend no more.
32 Se vi è alcuna cosa, oltre a ciò che io veggo, mostramelo; Se io ho operato perversamente, io non continuerò più.	32 Teach me wherein I have sinned; if I have done wrong, I will do so no more,"
33 Vorresti tu, ch’egli ti facesse la retribuzione di ciò ch’è proceduto da te? Sei tu che rifiuti ed eleggi, non già io; Di’ pure ciò che tu sai.	33 Would you then say that God must punish, since you reject what he is doing? It is you who must choose, not I; speak, therefore, what you know.
34 Gli uomini di senno diranno meco, E l’uomo savio mi acconsentirà,	34 Men of understanding will say to me, every wise man who hears my views:
35 Che Giobbe non parla con conoscimento, E che le sue parole non sono con intendimento.	35 "Job speaks without intelligence, and his words are without sense."
36 O padre mio, sia pur Giobbe provato infino all’ultimo, Per cagione delle sue repliche, simili a quelle degli uomini iniqui.	36 Let Job be tried to the limit, since his answers are those of the impious;
37 Perciocchè altrimenti egli aggiungerà misfatto al suo peccato, Si batterà a palme fra noi, E moltiplicherà le parole sue contro a Dio	37 For he is adding rebellion to his sin by brushing off our arguments and addressing many words to God.
