| 2 Veramente io so che così fia, e che non è giustificato l'uomo assomigliato a Dio. | 2 "Truly I know that it is so: But how can a man be just before God? |
| 3 S'elli vorrae contendere con lui, non potrae rispondere a lui una cosa delle mille. | 3 If one wished to contend with him, one could not answer him once in a thousand times. |
| 4 Di savio cuore è, e forte di fortezza; chi resiste a lui, e hae pace? | 4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength --who has hardened himself against him, and succeeded?-- |
| 5 Chè trapassa li monti; coloro, chi li ha sovvertiti nel furore suo, non seppono. | 5 he who removes mountains, and they know it not, when he overturns them in his anger; |
| 6 Chè commuove la terra del luogo suo, e le colonne sue sono percosse. | 6 who shakes the earth out of its place, and its pillars tremble; |
| 7 Chè comanda al sole, e non nasce; e le stelle chiude quasi come sotto segnale. | 7 who commands the sun, and it does not rise; who seals up the stars; |
| 8 Chè solo istende i cieli, e va sopra l' onde del mare. | 8 who alone stretched out the heavens, and trampled the waves of the sea; |
| 9 Chè fa (le sette stelle nel polo artico, e) Orion (lo qual è una stella dinanzi a uno segno chiamato) Arturo e Iadas (cioè alcune stelle pluviali) e le cose ascoste dello austro. | 9 who made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the chambers of the south; |
| 10 Chè fa le grandi cose e da non comprendere e maravigliose, delle quali non è numero. | 10 who does great things beyond understanding, and marvelous things without number. |
| 11 Se verrà a me, nol vedrò; se se n'andrà, non lo intenderd. | 11 Lo, he passes by me, and I see him not; he moves on, but I do not perceive him. |
| 12 Se repentinamente addomanderà, chi li risponderà? Ovvero chi gli puote dire: perchè hai tu fatto così? | 12 Behold, he snatches away; who can hinder him? who will say to him, 'What doest thou? |
| 13 Iddio, l'ira del quale non si puote resistere, e sotto lo quale si chinano coloro che portano lo mondo. | 13 "God will not turn back his anger; beneath him bowed the helpers of Rahab. |
| 14 Adunque quanto sono io, che risponda a lui, e favelli con lui colle parole mie? | 14 How then can I answer him, choosing my words with him? |
| 15 Che ancora, se io avrò qualche cosa giusta, non risponderò; ma lo mio giudice pregheroe. | 15 Though I am innocent, I cannot answer him; I must appeal for mercy to my accuser. |
| 16 E quando averae esaudito me chiamante, non credo ch' egli abbia esaudita la voce mia. | 16 If I summoned him and he answered me, I would not believe that he was listening to my voice. |
| 17 Certo nella tempesta triterà me, e moltiplicherà ancora le ferite mie senza cagione. | 17 For he crushes me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds without cause; |
| 18 Non permette che lo spirito mio si riposi, e riempie me d'amaritudine. | 18 he will not let me get my breath, but fills me with bitterness. |
| 19 Se la fortezza è addomandata, robustissimo è; se equità di giudicio, niuno ardisce di dire testimonianza per me. | 19 If it is a contest of strength, behold him! If it is a matter of justice, who can summon him? |
| 20 Se io giustificare mi vorrò, la bocca mia condannerà me; se io innocente mi mostrerò, reo mi comproverà. | 20 Though I am innocent, my own mouth would condemn me; though I am blameless, he would prove me perverse. |
| 21 Ancora se semplice io sarò, di questo medesimo non saprà l'anima mia; e rincrescerà a me della vita mia. | 21 I am blameless; I regard not myself; I loathe my life. |
| 22 Una cosa è ch' io hoe favellata, e lo innocente e lo malvagio lui consuma. | 22 It is all one; therefore I say, he destroys both the blameless and the wicked. |
| 23 Se egli tormenta, uccida una volta; e non rida della pena delli innocenti. | 23 When disaster brings sudden death, he mocks at the calamity of the innocent. |
| 24 La terra è data nelle mani del malvagio, e lo volto de' giudici suoi copre; la quale cosa se quello non è, chi è adunque? | 24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; he covers the faces of its judges-- if it is not he, who then is it? |
| 25 E li di miei più veloci furono che lo corriere; fuggirono, e non viddero lo bene. | 25 "My days are swifter than a runner; they flee away, they see no good. |
| 26 Trapassoro quasi navi le quali portano poma, e sì come l'aquila volante all' esca. | 26 They go by like skiffs of reed, like an eagle swooping on the prey. |
| 27 Quando dirò: non così favelleroe, commuto la faccia mia, e di dolore sono tormentato. | 27 If I say, 'I will forget my complaint, I will put off my sad countenance, and be of good cheer,' |
| 28 Temea tutte le opere mie, sapendo che non perdoneresti a' delinquenti. | 28 I become afraid of all my suffering, for I know thou wilt not hold me innocent. |
| 29 Ora se così malvagio sono, perchè indarno m' affaticai? | 29 I shall be condemned; why then do I labor in vain? |
| 30 Se lavato saroe sì come con la neve, e mondissime risplenderanno le mie mani; | 30 If I wash myself with snow, and cleanse my hands with lye, |
| 31 pure nelle brutture intignerai me, e abbomineranno me le vestimenta mie. | 31 yet thou wilt plunge me into a pit, and my own clothes will abhor me. |
| 32 Nè certo all' uomo, ch' è simile di me, risponderò; nè a colui che meco possa essere udito nello eguale giudicio. | 32 For he is not a man, as I am, that I might answer him, that we should come to trial together. |
| 33 Non è chi l' uno e l'altro possa riprendere, e porre la mano sua in amendue. | 33 There is no umpire between us, who might lay his hand upon us both. |
| 34 Tolga da me la virga sua, e la paura sua non spaventi me. | 34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not dread of him terrify me. |
| 35 Favelleroe, e non temerò lui; nè non posso temendo rispondere. | 35 Then I would speak without fear of him, for I am not so in myself. |
