Primeira Epístola a Timóteo 5

1 Ao ancião não repreendas com aspereza, mas adverte-o como a um pai, aos moços como a irmãos,	1 You should not rebuke an old man, but rather plead with him, as if he were your father; with young men, like brothers;
2 às mulheres de idade como a mães, às jovens como a irmãs, com toda a pureza.	2 with old women, like mothers; with young women, in all chastity, like sisters.
3 Honra as viúvas que são realmente viúvas.	3 Honor those widows who are true widows.
4 Se uma viúva tem filhos ou netos, como primeira obrigação aprendam estes a exercer com a própria família o dever da piedade filial e a retribuir aos pais o que deles receberam, porque isto é agradável a Deus.	4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let her first learn to manage her own household, and to fulfill, in turn, her own obligation to her parents; for this is acceptable before God.
5 Mas a que verdadeiramente é viúva e desamparada, põe a sua esperança em Deus e persevera noite e dia em orações e súplicas.	5 But she who is truly a widow and is destitute, let her hope in God, and let her be urgent in supplications and prayers, night and day.
6 Aquela, pelo contrário, que vive nos prazeres, embora viva, está morta.	6 For she who is living in pleasures is dead, while living.
7 Recorda-lhes isto, para que sejam irrepreensíveis.	7 And give instruction in this, so that they may be beyond reproach.
8 Quem se descuida dos seus, e principalmente dos de sua própria família, é um renegado, pior que um infiel.	8 But if anyone has no concern for his own, and especially for those of his own household, he has denied the faith, and he is worse than an unbeliever.
9 Poderá ser inscrita como viúva apenas quem tenha pelo menos sessenta anos de idade, casada uma só vez,	9 Let a widow be chosen who is no less than sixty years of age, who was the wife of one husband,
10 conhecida pelo seu bom comportamento, tenha educado bem os filhos, exercido a hospitalidade, lavado os pés dos santos, socorrido os infelizes e praticado toda espécie de boas obras.	10 who has testimony of her good works: whether she has educated children, or has provided hospitality, or has washed the feet of the saints, or has ministered to those suffering tribulation, or has pursued any kind of good work.
11 Não admitas viúvas jovens, porque, ao sentirem os atrativos da paixão contrária a Cristo, quererão casar-se outra vez	11 But avoid the younger widows. For once they have flourished in Christ, they will want to marry,
12 e incorrerão na censura de ter violado o primeiro compromisso.	12 resulting in damnation, because they have disregarded the primacy of faith.
13 Além disso, habituam-se a andar ociosas de casa em casa; e não só ociosas, mas também indiscretas e curiosas, falando coisas que não devem.	13 And being at the same time also idle, they learn to go from house to house, being not only idle, but also talkative and curious, speaking of things which do not concern them.
14 Quero, pois, que as viúvas jovens se casem, cumpram os deveres de mãe e cuidem do próprio lar, para não dar a ninguém ensejo de crítica.	14 Therefore, I want the younger women to marry, to procreate children, to be mothers of families, to provide no ready opportunity for the adversary to speak evil.
15 Algumas já se perverteram, para irem após Satanás.	15 For certain ones have already been turned back to Satan.
16 Se algum fiel tem viúvas em casa, procure dar-lhes assistência, de tal maneira que elas não sejam um peso para a Igreja, a fim de que esta possa socorrer as que verdadeiramente são viúvas.	16 If any among the faithful have widows, let him minister to them and not burden the Church, so that there may be enough for those who are true widows.
17 Os presbíteros que desempenham bem o encargo de presidir sejam honrados com dupla remuneração, principalmente os que trabalham na pregação e no ensino.	17 Let priests who lead well be held worthy of twice the honor, especially those who labor in the Word and in doctrine.
18 Pois diz a Escritura: Não atarás a boca ao boi quando ele pisar o grão {Dt 25,4}; e ainda: O operário é digno do seu salário {Lc 10,7}.	18 For Scripture says: “You shall not muzzle an ox as it is treading out the grain,” and, “The worker is worthy of his pay.”
19 Não recebas acusação contra um presbítero, senão por duas ou três testemunhas.	19 Do not be willing to accept an accusation against a priest, except under two or three witnesses.
20 Aos que faltam às suas obrigações, repreende-os diante de todos, para que também os demais se atemorizem.	20 Reprove sinners in the sight of everyone, so that the others may have fear.
21 Eu te conjuro, diante de Deus e de Cristo Jesus e dos anjos escolhidos, a que guardes essas regras sem prevenção, nada fazendo por espírito de parcialidade.	21 I testify before God and Christ Jesus and the elect Angels, that you should observe these things without prejudgment, doing nothing which shows favoritism to either side.
22 A ninguém imponhas as mãos inconsideradamente, para que não venhas a tornar-te cúmplice dos pecados alheios. Conserva-te puro.	22 You should not be quick to impose hands on anyone, nor should you take part in the sins of outsiders. Keep yourself chaste.
23 Não continues a beber só água, mas toma também um pouco de vinho, por causa do teu estômago e das tuas freqüentes indisposições.	23 Do not continue to drink only water, but make use of a little wine, for the sake of your stomach and your frequent infirmities.
24 Os pecados dos homens às vezes são conhecidos já antes de levados a juízo; outras vezes o serão depois.	24 The sins of some men have been made manifest, preceding them to judgment, but those of others are manifested later.
25 Da mesma forma, as boas obras: ou já são manifestas ou não poderão permanecer ocultas.	25 Similarly, too, good deeds have been made manifest, but even when they are not, they cannot remain hidden.
