Primeira Epístola a Timóteo 5

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Ao ancião não repreendas com aspereza, mas adverte-o como a um pai, aos moços como a irmãos,	1 Never speak sharply to a man older than yourself, but appeal to him as you would to your own father;treat younger men as brothers,
2 às mulheres de idade como a mães, às jovens como a irmãs, com toda a pureza.	2 older women as mothers and young women as sisters with al propriety.
3 Honra as viúvas que são realmente viúvas.	3 Be considerate to widows -- if they real y are widowed.
4 Se uma viúva tem filhos ou netos, como primeira obrigação aprendam estes a exercer com a própria família o dever da piedade filial e a retribuir aos pais o que deles receberam, porque isto é agradável a Deus.	4 If a widow has children or grandchildren, they are to learn first of al to do their duty to their own familiesand repay their debt to their parents, because this is what pleases God.
5 Mas a que verdadeiramente é viúva e desamparada, põe a sua esperança em Deus e persevera noite e dia em orações e súplicas.	5 But a woman who is real y widowed and left on her own has set her hope on God and perseveres nightand day in petitions and prayer.
6 Aquela, pelo contrário, que vive nos prazeres, embora viva, está morta.	6 The one who thinks only of pleasure is already dead while she is stil alive:
7 Recorda-lhes isto, para que sejam irrepreensíveis.	7 instruct them in this, too, so that their lives may be blameless.
8 Quem se descuida dos seus, e principalmente dos de sua própria família, é um renegado, pior que um infiel.	8 Anyone who does not look after his own relations, especial y if they are living with him, has rejected thefaith and is worse than an unbeliever.
9 Poderá ser inscrita como viúva apenas quem tenha pelo menos sessenta anos de idade, casada uma só vez,	9 Enrolment as a widow is permissible only for a woman at least sixty years old who has had only onehusband.
10 conhecida pelo seu bom comportamento, tenha educado bem os filhos, exercido a hospitalidade, lavado os pés dos santos, socorrido os infelizes e praticado toda espécie de boas obras.	10 She must be a woman known for her good works -- whether she has brought up her children, beenhospitable to strangers and washed the feet of God's holy people, helped people in hardship or been active in allkinds of good work.
11 Não admitas viúvas jovens, porque, ao sentirem os atrativos da paixão contrária a Cristo, quererão casar-se outra vez	11 Do not accept young widows because if their natural desires distract them from Christ, they want tomarry again,
12 e incorrerão na censura de ter violado o primeiro compromisso.	12 and then people condemn them for being unfaithful to their original promise.
13 Além disso, habituam-se a andar ociosas de casa em casa; e não só ociosas, mas também indiscretas e curiosas, falando coisas que não devem.	13 Besides, they learn how to be idle and go round from house to house; and then, not merely idle, theylearn to be gossips and meddlers in other people's affairs and to say what should remain unsaid.
14 Quero, pois, que as viúvas jovens se casem, cumpram os deveres de mãe e cuidem do próprio lar, para não dar a ninguém ensejo de crítica.	14 I think it is best for young widows to marry again and have children and a household to look after, andnot give the enemy any chance to raise a scandal about them;
15 Algumas já se perverteram, para irem após Satanás.	15 there are already some who have turned aside to fol ow Satan.
16 Se algum fiel tem viúvas em casa, procure dar-lhes assistência, de tal maneira que elas não sejam um peso para a Igreja, a fim de que esta possa socorrer as que verdadeiramente são viúvas.	16 If a woman believer has widowed relatives, she should support them and not make the Church bear theexpense but enable it to support those who are real y widowed.
17 Os presbíteros que desempenham bem o encargo de presidir sejam honrados com dupla remuneração, principalmente os que trabalham na pregação e no ensino.	17 Elders who do their work wel while they are in charge earn double reward, especial y those who workhard at preaching and teaching.
18 Pois diz a Escritura: Não atarás a boca ao boi quando ele pisar o grão {Dt 25,4}; e ainda: O operário é digno do seu salário {Lc 10,7}.	18 As scripture says: You must not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the corn; and again: The workerdeserves his wages.
19 Não recebas acusação contra um presbítero, senão por duas ou três testemunhas.	19 Never accept any accusation brought against an elder unless it is supported by two or three witnesses.
20 Aos que faltam às suas obrigações, repreende-os diante de todos, para que também os demais se atemorizem.	20 If anyone is at fault, reprimand him publicly, as a warning to the rest.
21 Eu te conjuro, diante de Deus e de Cristo Jesus e dos anjos escolhidos, a que guardes essas regras sem prevenção, nada fazendo por espírito de parcialidade.	21 Before God, and before Jesus Christ and the angels he has chosen, I charge you to keep these rulesimpartial y and never to be influenced by favouritism.
22 A ninguém imponhas as mãos inconsideradamente, para que não venhas a tornar-te cúmplice dos pecados alheios. Conserva-te puro.	22 Do not be too quick to lay hands on anyone, and never make yourself an accomplice in anybody else'ssin; keep yourself pure.
23 Não continues a beber só água, mas toma também um pouco de vinho, por causa do teu estômago e das tuas freqüentes indisposições.	23 You should give up drinking only water and have a little wine for the sake of your digestion and thefrequent bouts of illness that you have.
24 Os pecados dos homens às vezes são conhecidos já antes de levados a juízo; outras vezes o serão depois.	24 The faults of some people are obvious long before they come to the reckoning, while others have faultsthat are not discovered until later.
25 Da mesma forma, as boas obras: ou já são manifestas ou não poderão permanecer ocultas.	25 Similarly, the good that people do can be obvious; but even when it is not, it cannot remain hidden.
