I testify before God, and before Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead through his return and his kingdom:1 Before God and before Christ Jesus who is to be judge of the living and the dead, I charge you, in thename of his appearing and of his kingdom:
that you should preach the word urgently, in season and out of season: reprove, entreat, rebuke, with all patience and doctrine.2 proclaim the message and, welcome or unwelcome, insist on it. Refute falsehood, correct error, giveencouragement -- but do all with patience and with care to instruct.
For there shall be a time when they will not endure sound doctrine, but instead, according to their own desires, they will gather to themselves teachers, with itching ears,3 The time is sure to come when people wil not accept sound teaching, but their ears wil be itching foranything new and they wil col ect themselves a whole series of teachers according to their own tastes;
and certainly, they will turn their hearing away from the truth, and they will be turned toward fables.4 and then they will shut their ears to the truth and wil turn to myths.
But as for you, truly, be vigilant, laboring in all things. Do the work of an Evangelist, fulfilling your ministry. Show self-restraint.5 But you must keep steady al the time; put up with suffering; do the work of preaching the gospel; fulfilthe service asked of you.
For I am already being worn away, and the time of my dissolution presses close.6 As for me, my life is already being poured away as a libation, and the time has come for me to depart.
I have fought the good fight. I have completed the course. I have preserved the faith.7 I have fought the good fight to the end; I have run the race to the finish; I have kept the faith;
As for the remainder, a crown of justice has been reserved for me, one which the Lord, the just judge, will render to me in that day, and not only to me, but also to those who look forward to his return. Hurry to return to me soon.8 al there is to come for me now is the crown of uprightness which the Lord, the upright judge, wil give tome on that Day; and not only to me but to al those who have longed for his appearing.
For Demas has abandoned me, out of love for this age, and he has departed for Thessalonica.9 Make every effort to come and see me as soon as you can.
Crescens has gone to Galatia; Titus to Dalmatia.10 As it is, Demas has deserted me for love of this life and gone to Thessalonica, Crescens has gone toGalatia and Titus to Dalmatia;
Luke alone is with me. Take Mark and bring him with you; for he is useful to me in the ministry.11 only Luke is with me. Bring Mark with you; I find him a useful helper in my work.
But Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus.12 I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus.
When you return, bring with you the supplies that I left with Carpus at Troas, and the books, but especially the parchments.13 When you come, bring the cloak I left with Carpus in Troas, and the scrol s, especially the parchmentones.
Alexander the coppersmith has shown me much evil; the Lord will repay him according to his works.14 Alexander the coppersmith has done me a lot of harm; the Lord wil repay him as his deeds deserve.
And you should also avoid him; for he has strongly resisted our words.15 Be on your guard against him yourself, because he has been bitterly contesting everything that we say.
At my first defense, no one stood by me, but everyone abandoned me. May it not be counted against them!16 The first time I had to present my defence, no one came into court to support me. Every one of themdeserted me -- may they not be held accountable for it.
But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that through me the preaching would be accomplished, and so that all the Gentiles would hear. And I was freed from the mouth of the lion.17 But the Lord stood by me and gave me power, so that through me the message might be ful yproclaimed for al the gentiles to hear; and so I was saved from the lion's mouth.
The Lord has freed me from every evil work, and he will accomplish salvation by his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory forever and ever. Amen.18 The Lord will rescue me from all evil attempts on me, and bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. Tohim be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Greet Prisca, and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus.19 Greetings to Prisca and Aquila, and the family of Onesiphorus.
Erastus remained at Corinth. And Trophimus I left sick at Miletus.20 Erastus stayed behind at Corinth, and I left Trophimus il at Miletus.
Hurry to arrive before winter. Eubulus, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brothers greet you.21 Make every effort to come before the winter. Greetings to you from Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudiaand all the brothers.
May the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. May grace be with you. Amen.22 The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.
