The Praise of a Canticle, of David himself. Come, let us exult in the Lord. Let us shout joyfully to God, our Savior.1 God of vengeance, Yahweh, God of vengeance, shine forth!
Let us anticipate his presence with confession, and let us sing joyfully to him with psalms.2 Arise, judge of the world, give back the proud what they deserve!
For the Lord is a great God and a great King over all gods.3 How long are the wicked, Yahweh, how long are the wicked to triumph?
For in his hand are all the limits of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his.4 They bluster and boast, they flaunt themselves, all the evil-doers.
For the sea is his, and he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.5 They crush your people, Yahweh, they oppress your heritage,
Come, let us adore and fall prostrate, and let us weep before the Lord who made us.6 they murder the widow and the stranger, bring the orphan to a violent death.
For he is the Lord our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.7 They say, 'Yahweh is not looking, the God of Jacob is taking no notice.'
If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts:8 Take notice yourselves, you coarsest of people! Fools, when wil you learn some sense?
as in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness, where your fathers tempted me; they tested me, though they had seen my works.9 Shal he who implanted the ear not hear, he who fashioned the eye not see?
For forty years, I was offended by that generation, and I said: These have always strayed in heart.10 Shal he who instructs nations not punish? Yahweh, the teacher of al people,
And these have not known my ways. So I swore in my wrath: They shall not enter into my rest.11 knows human plans and how insipid they are.
How blessed are those you instruct, Yahweh, whom you teach by means of your law,
to give them respite in evil times, til a pit is dug for the wicked.
Yahweh will not abandon his people, he wil not desert his heritage;
for judgement will again become saving justice, and in its wake al upright hearts will fol ow.
Who rises up on my side against the wicked? Who stands firm on my side against al evil-doers?
If Yahweh did not come to my help, I should soon find myself dwel ing in the silence.
I need only say, 'I am slipping,' for your faithful love, Yahweh, to support me;
however great the anxiety of my heart, your consolations soothe me.
Are you partner to a destructive court, that gives disorder the status of law?
They make an attack on the life of the upright, and condemn innocent blood.
No! Yahweh is a stronghold to me, my God is my rock of refuge.
He turns back their guilt on themselves, annihilates them for their wickedness, he annihilates them,Yahweh our God.
