But Simon and his army kept marching along opposite him to every place he went. |

| 28 Ergueu ali sete pirâmides, uma diante da outra, para seu pai, sua mãe e seus quatro irmãos.* | 28 He also erected seven pyramids, opposite one another, for his father and mother and four brothers. |
| 29 Colocou nelas ornamentos e cercou-as com altas colunas, sobre as quais, para eterna lembrança, colocou muitas armas e, junto a estas, navios esculpidos, que podiam ser vistos por todos os que se achavam no mar. | 29 And for the pyramids * he devised an elaborate setting, erecting about them great columns, and upon the columns he put suits of armor for a permanent memorial, and beside the suits of armor carved ships, so that they could be seen by all who sail the sea. |
| 30 Tal foi a sepultura que ele construiu em Modin e que existe ainda hoje. | 30 This is the tomb which he built in Modein; it remains to this day. |

| 34 Escolheu mensageiros e enviou-os ao rei Demétrio, pedindo-lhe que restabelecesse o país porque Trifão o havia submetido inteiramente à pilhagem. | 34 Simon also chose men and sent them to Demetrius the king with a request to grant relief to the country, for all that Trypho did was to plunder. |
| 35 O rei Demétrio mandou-lhe sua resposta e escreveu-lhe nestes termos: | 35 Demetrius the king sent him a favorable reply to this request, and wrote him a letter as follows, |
| 36 “O rei Demétrio a Simão, sumo sacerdote e amigo dos reis, aos anciãos e ao povo judeu, saudações! | 36 "King Demetrius to Simon, the high priest and friend of kings, and to the elders and nation of the Jews, greeting. |
| 37 Recebemos a coroa de ouro e a palma que nos enviastes, e estamos dispostos a concluir convosco uma paz sólida, bem como a escrever aos funcionários que vos dispensem dos impostos. | 37 We have received the gold crown and the palm branch which you * sent, and we are ready to make a general peace with you and to write to our officials to grant you release from tribute. |
| 38 Tudo o que foi decidido a vosso favor está confirmado e as fortalezas que construístes são vossas. | 38 All the grants that we have made to you remain valid, and let the strongholds that you have built be your possession. |
| 39 Nós vos perdoamos todos os erros e as faltas cometidas até o dia de hoje. Renunciamos à coroa que nos devíeis e, se existem ainda em Jerusalém outras dívidas a pagar, não se paguem mais. | 39 We pardon any errors and offenses committed to this day, and cancel the crown tax which you owe; and whatever other tax has been collected in Jerusalem shall be collected no longer. |
| 40 Finalmente, se existem entre vós alguns que sejam aptos a se alistarem em nossa guarda, que eles o sejam e que a paz reine entre nós”. | 40 And if any of you are qualified to be enrolled in our bodyguard, * let them be enrolled, and let there be peace between us." |
| 41 Foi no ano cento e setenta que o jugo dos pagãos foi afastado de Israel.* | 41 In the one hundred and seventieth year * the yoke of the Gentiles was removed from Israel, |
| 42 O povo começou a datar os atos e os contratos do primeiro ano de Simão, sumo sacerdote, chefe do exército e governador dos judeus. | 42 and the people began to write in their documents and contracts, "In the first year of Simon the great high priest and commander and leader of the Jews." |
| 43 Nessa época, Simão marchou contra Gazara e cercou-a com suas tropas. Construiu uma torre móvel, levou-a para perto da cidade, atacou uma das torres e apoderou-se dela. | 43 In those days Simon * encamped against Gazara * and surrounded it with troops. He made a siege engine, brought it up to the city, and battered and captured one tower. |
| 44 Da torre móvel os soldados lançaram-se na cidade, causando ali uma grande confusão, | 44 The men in the siege engine leaped out into the city, and a great tumult arose in the city. |
| 45 de modo que os habitantes, com suas mulheres e filhos, apareceram sobre os muros, rasgaram suas vestes e pediram com altos brados a Simão que os poupasse. | 45 The men in the city, with their wives and children, went up on the wall with their clothes rent, and they cried out with a loud voice, asking Simon to make peace with them; |
| 46 “Não nos trates conforme nossas maldades – diziam eles –, mas segundo a tua misericórdia.” | 46 they said, "Do not treat us according to our wicked acts but according to your mercy." |
| 47 Simão perdoou-os e não prosseguiu o ataque. Não obstante, expulsou-os da cidade e mandou purificar todas as casas onde se achavam os ídolos. Em seguida, fez sua entrada triunfal ao som de hinos e de cânticos de louvor. | 47 So Simon reached an agreement with them and stopped fighting against them. But he expelled them from the city and cleansed the houses in which the idols were, and then entered it with hymns and praise. |
| 48 Fez desaparecer dali toda impureza e trouxe de volta os habitantes fiéis à Lei. Fortificou-a e construiu para si mesmo uma morada. | 48 He cast out of it all uncleanness, and settled in it men who observed the law. He also strengthened its fortifications and built in it a house for himself. |
| 49 Os ocupantes da fortaleza de Jerusalém, que não podiam sair para ir à cidade comprar e vender, achavam-se numa grande miséria e um bom número deles morreu de fome. | 49 The men in the citadel at Jerusalem were prevented from going out to the country and back to buy and sell. So they were very hungry, and many of them perished from famine. |
| 50 Suplicaram a Simão para que lhes concedesse a paz. Ele a concedeu, mas os expulsou de lá e purificou a fortaleza de todas as suas contaminações. | 50 Then they cried to Simon to make peace with them, and he did so. But he expelled them from there and cleansed the citadel from its pollutions. |
| 51 E entrou nela no dia vinte e três do segundo mês, do ano cento e setenta e um, com cânticos e palmas, harpas, címbalos, liras, hinos e louvores, porque um grande inimigo de Israel tinha sido aniquilado. | 51 On the twenty-third day of the second month, in the one hundred and seventy-first year, * the Jews * entered it with praise and palm branches, and with harps and cymbals and stringed instruments, and with hymns and songs, because a great enemy had been crushed and removed from Israel. |
| 52 Ordenou também que esse dia fosse celebrado a cada ano com regozijo. | 52 And Simon * decreed that every year they should celebrate this day with rejoicing. He strengthened the fortifications of the temple hill alongside the citadel, and he and his men dwelt there. |
| 53 Fortificou a montanha do templo, na parte próxima à fortaleza, e habitou ali com os seus companheiros. | 53 And Simon saw that John his son had reached manhood, so he made him commander of all the forces, and he dwelt in Gazara. |
