VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Rogamus autem vos, fratres, per adventum Domini nostri Jesu Christi, et nostræ congregationis in ipsum :1 About the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, brothers, and our being gathered to him:
ut non cito moveamini a vestro sensu, neque terreamini, neque per spiritum, neque per sermonem, neque per epistolam tamquam per nos missam, quasi instet dies Domini.2 please do not be too easily thrown into confusion or alarmed by any manifestation of the Spirit or anystatement or any letter claiming to come from us, suggesting that the Day of the Lord has already arrived.
Ne quis vos seducat ullo modo : quoniam nisi venerit discessio primum, et revelatus fuerit homo peccati filius perditionis,3 Never let anyone deceive you in any way. It cannot happen until the Great Revolt has taken place andthere has appeared the wicked One, the lost One,
qui adversatur, et extollitur supra omne, quod dicitur Deus, aut quod colitur, ita ut in templo Dei sedeat ostendens se tamquam sit Deus.4 the Enemy, who raises himself above every so-cal ed God or object of worship to enthrone himself inGod's sanctuary and flaunts the claim that he is God.
Non retinetis quod cum adhuc essem apud vos, hæc dicebam vobis ?5 Surely you remember my tel ing you about this when I was with you?
et nunc quid detineat scitis, ut reveletur in suo tempore.6 And you know, too, what is still holding him back from appearing before his appointed time.
Nam mysterium jam operatur iniquitatis : tantum ut qui tenet nunc, teneat, donec de medio fiat.7 The mystery of wickedness is already at work, but let him who is restraining it once be removed,
Et tunc revelabitur ille iniquus, quem Dominus Jesus interficiet spiritu oris sui, et destruet illustratione adventus sui eum :8 and the wicked One will appear openly. The Lord wil destroy him with the breath of his mouth and wilannihilate him with his glorious appearance at his coming.
cujus est adventus secundum operationem Satanæ in omni virtute, et signis, et prodigiis mendacibus,9 But the coming of the wicked One wil be marked by Satan being at work in al kinds of counterfeitmiracles and signs and wonders,
et in omni seductione iniquitatis iis qui pereunt : eo quod caritatem veritatis non receperunt ut salvi fierent.10 and every wicked deception aimed at those who are on the way to destruction because they would notaccept the love of the truth and so be saved.
Ideo mittet illis Deus operationem erroris ut credant mendacio,11 And therefore God sends on them a power that deludes people so that they believe what is false,
ut judicentur omnes qui non crediderunt veritati, sed consenserunt iniquitati.
and so that those who do not believe the truth and take their pleasure in wickedness may al becondemned.
Nos autem debemus gratias agere Deo semper pro vobis, fratres dilecti a Deo, quod elegerit vos Deus primitias in salutem in sanctificatione spiritus, et in fide veritatis :13 But we must always thank God for you, brothers whom the Lord loves, because God chose you fromthe beginning to be saved by the Spirit who makes us holy and by faith in the truth.
in qua et vocavit vos per Evangelium nostrum in acquisitionem gloriæ Domini nostri Jesu Christi.14 Through our gospel he called you to this so that you should claim as your own the glory of our LordJesus Christ.
Itaque fratres, state : et tenete traditiones, quas didicistis, sive per sermonem, sive per epistolam nostram.15 Stand firm, then, brothers, and keep the traditions that we taught you, whether by word of mouth or byletter.
Ipse autem Dominus noster Jesus Christus, et Deus et Pater noster, qui dilexit nos, et dedit consolationem æternam, et spem bonam in gratia,16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father who has given us his love and, through hisgrace, such ceaseless encouragement and such sure hope,
exhortetur corda vestra, et confirmet in omni opere et sermone bono.17 encourage you and strengthen you in every good word and deed.
