VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Josue senex provectæque ætatis erat, et dixit Dominus ad eum : Senuisti, et longævus es, terraque latissima derelicta est, quæ necdum sorte divisa est :1 Now Joshua had grown old and advanced in years. Yahweh said to him, 'You are now old andadvanced in years, yet there is stil a great deal of territory left to be taken possession of.
omnis videlicet Galilæa, Philisthiim, et universa Gessuri.2 This is al the territory left: 'Al the districts of the Philistines and the whole country of the Geshurites;
A fluvio turbido, qui irrigat Ægyptum, usque ad terminos Accaron contra aquilonem : terra Chanaan, quæ in quinque regulos Philisthiim dividitur, Gazæos, et Azotios, Ascalonitas, Gethæos, et Accaronitas.3 from the Shihor, facing Egypt, to the frontier of Ekron in the north, is reckoned as Canaanite territory.The five rulers of the Philistines have their seats at Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron, respectively; theAvvites are in
Ad meridiem vero sunt Hevæi, omnis terra Chanaan, et Maara Sidoniorum, usque Apheca et terminos Amorrhæi,4 the south. The entire territory of the Canaanites, and Mearah which belongs to the Sidonians, as far asAphekah and as far as the frontier of the Amorites;
ejusque confinia. Libani quoque regio contra orientem, a Baalgad sub monte Hermon, donec ingrediaris Emath ;5 and then the country of the Gebalites with the entire Lebanon eastwards from Baal-Gad at the foot ofMount Hermon to the Pass of Hamath.
omnium qui habitant in monte a Libano usque ad aquas Maserephoth, universique Sidonii. Ego sum qui delebo eos a facie filiorum Israël. Veniat ergo in partem hæreditatis Israël, sicut præcepi tibi.6 'All who live in the highlands from the Lebanon to Misrephoth in the west -- al the Sidonians -- I myselfshall dispossess before the Israelites. Al you have to do is to distribute the territory as a heritage for theIsraelites as I have ordered you.
Et nunc divide terram in possessionem novem tribubus, et dimidiæ tribui Manasse,7 The time has come to divide this territory as a heritage between the nine tribes and the half-tribe ofManasseh: from the Jordan as far as the Great Sea in the west, you must give it them; the Great Sea wil betheir limit.'
cum qua Ruben et Gad possederunt terram, quam tradidit eis Moyses famulus Domini trans fluenta Jordanis, ad orientalem plagam.8 As regards the other half-tribe of Manasseh, this and the Reubenites and Gadites had already receivedtheir heritage, given them by Moses on the further, eastern side of the Jordan, the one which Moses, servant ofYahweh, had already given them:
Ab Aroër, quæ sita est in ripa torrentis Arnon, et in vallis medio, universaque campestria Medaba, usque Dibon,9 The country onwards from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Val ey, with the town in the bottom of theval ey and the entire tableland from Medeba to Dibon;
et cunctas civitates Sehon regis Amorrhæi, qui regnavit in Hesebon, usque ad terminos filiorum Ammon,10 al the towns of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had reigned in Heshbon, to the frontier of theAmmonites;
et Galaad, ac terminum Gessuri et Machati, et omnem montem Hermon, et universam Basan, usque ad Salecha,11 then Gilead and the territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites with the whole Hermon range and thewhole of Bashan as far as Salecah;
omne regnum Og in Basan, qui regnavit in Astaroth et Edrai, ipse fuit de reliquiis Raphaim : percussitque eos Moyses, atque delevit.12 and in Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og, who had reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei, and was the lastof the survivors of the Rephaim. Moses had conquered and dispossessed these two kings.
Nolueruntque disperdere filii Israël Gessuri et Machati : et habitaverunt in medio Israël usque in præsentem diem.13 The Israelites did not, however, dispossess either the Geshurites or the Maacathites, hence Geshurand Maacah survive inside Israel even today.
Tribui autem Levi non dedit possessionem : sed sacrificia et victimæ Domini Dei Israël, ipsa est ejus hæreditas, sicut locutus est illi.
To the tribe of Levi alone no heritage was given; Yahweh, God of Israel, was his heritage, as he hadtold him.
Dedit ergo Moyses possessionem tribui filiorum Ruben juxta cognationes suas.15 Moses had given the tribe of the sons of Reuben a share by clans.
Fuitque terminus eorum ab Aroër, quæ sita est in ripa torrentis Arnon, et in valle ejusdem torrentis media : universam planitiem, quæ ducit Medaba,16 Thus, their territory was the entire tableland from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Val ey, with the townin the bottom of the val ey, as far as Medeba,
et Hesebon, cunctosque viculos earum, qui sunt in campestribus : Dibon quoque et Bamothbaal, et oppidum Baalmaon,17 Heshbon with all the towns on the tableland: Dibon, Bamoth-Baal, Beth-Baal-Meon,
et Jassa, et Cedimoth, et Mephaath,18 Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,
et Cariathaim, et Sabama, et Sarathasar in monte convallis.19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah and, in the highlands of the Arabah, Zereth-Shahar;
Bethphogor et Asedoth, Phasga et Bethiesimoth,20 Beth-Peor, the watered foothills of Mount Pisgah, Beth-ha-Jeshimoth,
et omnes urbes campestres, universaque regna Sehon regis Amorrhæi, qui regnavit in Hesebon, quem percussit Moyses cum principibus Madian : Hevæum, et Recem, et Sur, et Hur, et Rebe duces Sehon habitatores terræ.21 al the towns on the tableland and the entire kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had reignedin Heshbon; he had been defeated by Moses, and with him the princes of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur andReba, vassals of Sihon, formerly living in the country.
Et Balaam filium Beor ariolum occiderunt filii Israël gladio cum ceteris interfectis.22 As regards Balaam son of Beor, the soothsayer, the Israelites had put him to the sword with thosewhom they had kil ed.
Factusque est terminus filiorum Ruben Jordanis fluvius. Hæc est possessio Rubenitarum per cognationes suas urbium et viculorum.
The boundary of the Reubenites was the Jordan and its territory. Such was the heritage of the sons ofReuben, by clans, with the towns and vil ages belonging to them.
Deditque Moyses tribui Gad et filiis ejus per cognationes suas possessionem, cujus hæc divisio est.24 Moses had given the tribe of Gad, the sons of Gad, a share by clans.
Terminus Jaser, et omnes civitates Galaad, et dimidiam partem terræ filiorum Ammon, usque ad Aroër, quæ est contra Rabba,25 Their territory was Jazer, al the towns of Gilead, half the country of the Ammonites as far as Aroerfacing Rabbah,
et ab Hesebon usque Ramoth, Masphe et Betonim : et a Manaim usque ad terminos Dabir.26 and from Heshbon to Ramath-Mizpeh and Betonim; from Mahanaim as far as the territory of Lo-Debar,
In valle quoque Betharan, et Bethnemra, et Socoth, et Saphon reliquam partem regni Sehon regis Hesebon : hujus quoque finis, Jordanis est, usque ad extremam partem maris Cenereth trans Jordanem ad orientalem plagam.27 and in the val ey: Beth-Haram, Beth-Nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon -- the rest of the kingdom of Sihonking of Heshbon -- the Jordan and the territory running to the tip of the Sea of Chinneroth, on the further, easternside of the Jordan.
Hæc est possessio filiorum Gad per familias suas, civitates et villæ earum.
Such was the heritage of the sons of Gad, by clans, with their towns and vil ages belonging to them.
Dedit et dimidiæ tribui Manasse, filiisque ejus juxta cognationes suas, possessionem,29 Moses had given the half-tribe of Manasseh a share by clans.
cujus hoc principium est : a Manaim universam Basan, et cuncta regna Og regis Basan, omnesque vicos Jair, qui sunt in Basan, sexaginta oppida :30 Their territory, starting from Mahanaim, was the whole of Bashan, the entire kingdom of Og king ofBashan, all the Encampments of Jair in Bashan: sixty towns.
et dimidiam partem Galaad, et Astaroth, et Edrai, urbes regni Og in Basan : filiis Machir, filii Manasse, dimidiæ parti filiorum Machir juxta cognationes suas.31 Half of Gilead, with Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the royal cities of Og in Bashan, were al otted to the sons ofMachir son of Manasseh, to half of the sons of Machir, by clans.
Hanc possessionem divisit Moyses in campestribus Moab trans Jordanem contra Jericho ad orientalem plagam.32 This was what Moses had conferred in heritage on the Plains of Moab on the further, eastern side ofthe Jordan opposite Jericho.
Tribui autem Levi non dedit possessionem : quoniam Dominus Deus Israël ipse est possessio ejus, ut locutus est illi.33 To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses gave no heritage; Yahweh, God of Israel, was his heritage, ashe had told him.
