VULGATANEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Josue senex provectæque ætatis erat, et dixit Dominus ad eum : Senuisti, et longævus es, terraque latissima derelicta est, quæ necdum sorte divisa est :1 When Joshua was old and advanced in years, the LORD said to him: "Though now you are old and advanced in years, a very large part of the land still remains to be conquered.
omnis videlicet Galilæa, Philisthiim, et universa Gessuri.2 This additional land includes all Geshur and all the districts of the Philistines
A fluvio turbido, qui irrigat Ægyptum, usque ad terminos Accaron contra aquilonem : terra Chanaan, quæ in quinque regulos Philisthiim dividitur, Gazæos, et Azotios, Ascalonitas, Gethæos, et Accaronitas.3 (from the stream adjoining Egypt to the boundary of Ekron in the north is reckoned Canaanite territory, though held by the five lords of the Philistines in Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron); also where the Avvim are in the south;
Ad meridiem vero sunt Hevæi, omnis terra Chanaan, et Maara Sidoniorum, usque Apheca et terminos Amorrhæi,4 all the land of the Canaanites from Mearah of the Sidonians to Aphek, and the boundaries of the Amorites;
ejusque confinia. Libani quoque regio contra orientem, a Baalgad sub monte Hermon, donec ingrediaris Emath ;5 and the Gebalite territory; and all the Lebanon on the east, from Baal-gad at the foot of Mount Hermon to Labo in the land of Hamath.
omnium qui habitant in monte a Libano usque ad aquas Maserephoth, universique Sidonii. Ego sum qui delebo eos a facie filiorum Israël. Veniat ergo in partem hæreditatis Israël, sicut præcepi tibi.6 At the advance of the Israelites I will drive out all the Sidonian inhabitants of the mountain regions between Lebanon and Misrephoth-maim; at least include these areas in the division of the Israelite heritage, just as I have commanded you.
Et nunc divide terram in possessionem novem tribubus, et dimidiæ tribui Manasse,7 Now, therefore, apportion among the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh the land which is to be their heritage."
cum qua Ruben et Gad possederunt terram, quam tradidit eis Moyses famulus Domini trans fluenta Jordanis, ad orientalem plagam.8 Now the other half of the tribe of Manasseh as well as the Reubenites and Gadites, had received their heritage which Moses, the servant of the LORD, had given them east of the Jordan:
Ab Aroër, quæ sita est in ripa torrentis Arnon, et in vallis medio, universaque campestria Medaba, usque Dibon,9 from Aroer on the bank of the Wadi Arnon and the city in the wadi itself, through the tableland of Medeba and Dibon,
et cunctas civitates Sehon regis Amorrhæi, qui regnavit in Hesebon, usque ad terminos filiorum Ammon,10 with the rest of the cities of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, to the boundary of the Ammonites;
et Galaad, ac terminum Gessuri et Machati, et omnem montem Hermon, et universam Basan, usque ad Salecha,11 also Gilead and the territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites, all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salecah,
omne regnum Og in Basan, qui regnavit in Astaroth et Edrai, ipse fuit de reliquiis Raphaim : percussitque eos Moyses, atque delevit.12 the entire kingdom in Bashan of Og, a survivor of the Rephaim, who reigned at Ashtaroth and Edrei. Though Moses conquered and occupied these territories,
Nolueruntque disperdere filii Israël Gessuri et Machati : et habitaverunt in medio Israël usque in præsentem diem.13 the Israelites did not dislodge the Geshurites and Maacathites, so that Geshur and Maacath survive in the midst of Israel to this day.
Tribui autem Levi non dedit possessionem : sed sacrificia et victimæ Domini Dei Israël, ipsa est ejus hæreditas, sicut locutus est illi.
However, to the tribe of Levi Moses assigned no heritage since, as the LORD had promised them, the LORD, the God of Israel, is their heritage.
Dedit ergo Moyses possessionem tribui filiorum Ruben juxta cognationes suas.15 What Moses gave to the Reubenite clans:
Fuitque terminus eorum ab Aroër, quæ sita est in ripa torrentis Arnon, et in valle ejusdem torrentis media : universam planitiem, quæ ducit Medaba,16 Their territory reached from Aroer, on the bank of the Wadi Arnon, and the city in the wadi itself, through the tableland about Medeba,
et Hesebon, cunctosque viculos earum, qui sunt in campestribus : Dibon quoque et Bamothbaal, et oppidum Baalmaon,17 to include Heshbon and all its towns which are on the tableland, Dibon, Bamoth-baal, Beth-baal-meon,
et Jassa, et Cedimoth, et Mephaath,18 Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,
et Cariathaim, et Sabama, et Sarathasar in monte convallis.19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the knoll within the valley,
Bethphogor et Asedoth, Phasga et Bethiesimoth,20 Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, Beth-jeshimoth,
et omnes urbes campestres, universaque regna Sehon regis Amorrhæi, qui regnavit in Hesebon, quem percussit Moyses cum principibus Madian : Hevæum, et Recem, et Sur, et Hur, et Rebe duces Sehon habitatores terræ.21 and the other cities of the tableland and, generally, of the kingdom of Sihon. This Amorite king, who reigned in Heshbon, Moses had killed, with his vassals, the princes of Midian, who were settled in the land: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba;
Et Balaam filium Beor ariolum occiderunt filii Israël gladio cum ceteris interfectis.22 and among their slain followers the Israelites put to the sword also the soothsayer Balaam, son of Beor.
Factusque est terminus filiorum Ruben Jordanis fluvius. Hæc est possessio Rubenitarum per cognationes suas urbium et viculorum.
The boundary of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. These cities and their villages were the heritage of the clans of the Reubenites.
Deditque Moyses tribui Gad et filiis ejus per cognationes suas possessionem, cujus hæc divisio est.24 What Moses gave to the Gadite clans:
Terminus Jaser, et omnes civitates Galaad, et dimidiam partem terræ filiorum Ammon, usque ad Aroër, quæ est contra Rabba,25 Their territory included Jazer, all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites as far as Aroer, toward Rabbah (that is,
et ab Hesebon usque Ramoth, Masphe et Betonim : et a Manaim usque ad terminos Dabir.26 from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the boundary of Lodebar);
In valle quoque Betharan, et Bethnemra, et Socoth, et Saphon reliquam partem regni Sehon regis Hesebon : hujus quoque finis, Jordanis est, usque ad extremam partem maris Cenereth trans Jordanem ad orientalem plagam.27 and in the Jordan valley: Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, Zaphon, the other part of the kingdom of Sihon, king of Heshbon, with the bank of the Jordan to the southeastern tip of the Sea of Chinnereth.
Hæc est possessio filiorum Gad per familias suas, civitates et villæ earum.
These cities and their villages were the heritage of the clans of the Gadites.
Dedit et dimidiæ tribui Manasse, filiisque ejus juxta cognationes suas, possessionem,29 What Moses gave to the clans of the half-tribe of Manasseh:
cujus hoc principium est : a Manaim universam Basan, et cuncta regna Og regis Basan, omnesque vicos Jair, qui sunt in Basan, sexaginta oppida :30 Their territory included Mahanaim, all of Bashan, the entire kingdom of Og, king of Bashan, and all the villages of Jair, which are sixty cities in Bashan.
et dimidiam partem Galaad, et Astaroth, et Edrai, urbes regni Og in Basan : filiis Machir, filii Manasse, dimidiæ parti filiorum Machir juxta cognationes suas.31 Half of Gilead, with Ashtaroth and Edrei, once the royal cities of Og in Bashan, fell to the descendants of Machir, son of Manasseh, for half the clans descended from Machir.
Hanc possessionem divisit Moyses in campestribus Moab trans Jordanem contra Jericho ad orientalem plagam.32 These are the portions which Moses gave when he was in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan east of Jericho.
Tribui autem Levi non dedit possessionem : quoniam Dominus Deus Israël ipse est possessio ejus, ut locutus est illi.33 However, Moses gave no heritage to the tribe of Levi, since the LORD himself, the God of Israel, is their heritage, as he promised.
