VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Debemus autem nos firmiores imbecillitates infirmorum sustinere, et non nobis placere.1 It is for us who are strong to bear with the susceptibilities of the weaker ones, and not pleaseourselves.
Unusquisque vestrum proximo suo placeat in bonum, ad ædificationem.2 Each of us must consider his neighbour's good, so that we support one another.
Etenim Christus non sibi placuit, sed sicut scriptum est : Improperia improperantium tibi ceciderunt super me.3 Christ did not indulge his own feelings, either; indeed, as scripture says: The insults of those whoinsult you fal on me.
Quæcumque enim scripta sunt, ad nostram doctrinam scripta sunt : ut per patientiam, et consolationem Scripturarum, spem habeamus.4 And all these things which were written so long ago were written so that we, learning perseveranceand the encouragement which the scriptures give, should have hope.
Deus autem patientiæ et solatii det vobis idipsum sapere in alterutrum secundum Jesum Christum :5 Now the God of perseverance and encouragement give you al the same purpose, fol owing theexample of Christ Jesus,
ut unanimes, uno ore honorificetis Deum et patrem Domini nostri Jesu Christi.6 so that you may together give glory to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ with one heart.
Propter quod suscipite invicem, sicut et Christus suscepit vos in honorem Dei.7 Accept one another, then, for the sake of God's glory, as Christ accepted you.
Dico enim Christum Jesum ministrum fuisse circumcisionis propter veritatem Dei, ad confirmandas promissiones patrum :8 I tel you that Christ's work was to serve the circumcised, fulfil ing the truthfulness of God by carryingout the promises made to the fathers,
gentes autem super misericordia honorare Deum, sicut scriptum est : Propterea confitebor tibi in gentibus, Domine, et nomini tuo cantabo.9 and his work was also for the gentiles, so that they should give glory to God for his faithful love; as scripture says: For this I shall praise you among the nations and sing praise to your name.
Et iterum dicit : Lætamini gentes cum plebe ejus.10 And in another place it says: Nations, rejoice, with his people,
Et iterum : Laudate omnes gentes Dominum : et magnificate eum omnes populi.11 and in another place again: Praise the Lord, all nations, extol him, al peoples.
Et rursus Isaias ait : Erit radix Jesse, et qui exsurget regere gentes, in eum gentes sperabunt.12 And in Isaiah, it says: The root of Jesse wil appear, he who rises up to rule the nations, and in himthe nations wil put their hope.
Deus autem spei repleat vos omni gaudio, et pace in credendo : ut abundetis in spe, et virtute Spiritus Sancti.
May the God of hope fil you with all joy and peace in your faith, so that in the power of the HolySpirit you may be rich in hope.
Certus sum autem fratres mei et ego ipse de vobis, quoniam et ipsi pleni estis dilectione, repleti omni scientia, ita ut possitis alterutrum monere.14 My brothers, I am quite sure that you, in particular, are ful of goodness, ful y instructed and capableof correcting each other.
Audacius autem scripsi vobis fratres ex parte, tamquam in memoriam vos reducens : propter gratiam, quæ data est mihi a Deo,15 But I have special confidence in writing on some points to you, to refresh your memories, because ofthe grace that was given to me by God.
ut sim minister Christi Jesu in gentibus : sanctificans Evangelium Dei, ut fiat oblatio gentium accepta, et sanctificata in Spiritu Sancto.16 I was given grace to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the gentiles, dedicated to offer them the gospelof God, so that gentiles might become an acceptable offering, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
Habeo igitur gloriam in Christo Jesu ad Deum.17 So I can be proud, in Christ Jesus, of what I have done for God.
Non enim audeo aliquid loqui eorum, quæ per me non efficit Christus in obedientiam gentium, verbo et factis :18 Of course I can dare to speak only of the things which Christ has done through me to win theal egiance of the gentiles, using what I have said and done,
in virtute signorum, et prodigiorum, in virtute Spiritus Sancti : ita ut ab Jerusalem per circuitum usque ad Illyricum repleverim Evangelium Christi.19 by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God. In this way, from Jerusalemand all round, even as far as Il yricum, I have ful y carried out the preaching of the gospel of Christ;
Sic autem prædicavi Evangelium hoc, non ubi nominatus est Christus, ne super alienum fundamentum ædificarem :20 and what is more, it has been my rule to preach the gospel only where the name of Christ has notalready been heard, for I do not build on another's foundations;
sed sicut scriptum est : Quibus non est annuntiatum de eo, videbunt : et qui non audierunt, intelligent.
in accordance with scripture: Those who have never been told about him wil see him, and thosewho have never heard about him will understand.
Propter quod et impediebar plurimum venire ad vos, et prohibitus sum usque adhuc.22 That is why I have been so often prevented from coming to see you;
Nunc vero ulterius locum non habens in his regionibus, cupiditatem autem habens veniendi ad vos ex multis jam præcedentibus annis :23 now, however, as there is nothing more to keep me in these parts, I hope, after longing for manyyears past to visit you, to see you when I am on the way to Spain-
cum in Hispaniam proficisci cœpero, spero quod præteriens videam vos, et a vobis deducar illuc, si vobis primum ex parte fruitus fuero.24 and after enjoying at least something of your company, to be sent on my way with your support.
Nunc igitur proficiscar in Jerusalem ministrare sanctis.25 But now I have undertaken to go to Jerusalem in the service of the holy people of God there,
Probaverunt enim Macedonia et Achaia collationem aliquam facere in pauperes sanctorum, qui sunt in Jerusalem.26 since Macedonia and Achaia have chosen to make a generous contribution to the poor amongGod's holy people at Jerusalem.
Placuit enim eis : et debitores sunt eorum. Nam si spiritualium eorum participes facti sunt gentiles, debent et in carnalibus ministrare illis.27 Yes, they chose to; not that they did not owe it to them. For if the gentiles have been given a sharein their spiritual possessions, then in return to give them help with material possessions is repaying a debt tothem.
Hoc igitur cum consummavero, et assignavero eis fructum hunc, per vos proficiscar in Hispaniam.28 So when I have done this, and given this harvest into their possession, I shall visit you on the way toSpain.
Scio autem quoniam veniens ad vos, in abundantia benedictionis Evangelii Christi veniam.29 I am sure that, when I do come to you, I shal come with the fullest blessing of Christ.
Obsecro ergo vos fratres per Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum, et per caritatem Sancti Spiritus, ut adjuvetis me in orationibus vestris pro me ad Deum,30 Meanwhile I urge you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, that in yourprayers to God for me you exert yourselves to help me;
ut liberer ab infidelibus, qui sunt in Judæa, et obsequii mei oblatio accepta fiat in Jerusalem sanctis,31 praying that I may escape the unbelievers in Judaea, and that the aid I am carrying to Jerusalem wilbe acceptable to God's holy people.
ut veniam ad vos in gaudio per voluntatem Dei, et refrigerer vobiscum.32 Then I shal come to you, if God wil s, for a happy time of relaxation in your company.
Deus autem pacis sit cum omnibus vobis. Amen.33 The God of peace be with you al . Amen.
