VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Hæc locutus sum vobis, ut non scandalizemini.1 I have told you al this so that you may not fal away.
Absque synagogis facient vos : sed venit hora, ut omnis qui interficit vos arbitretur obsequium se præstare Deo.2 They wil expel you from the synagogues, and indeed the time is coming when anyone who kills youwil think he is doing a holy service to God.
Et hæc facient vobis, quia non noverunt Patrem, neque me.3 They wil do these things because they have never known either the Father or me.
But I have told you all this, so that when the time for it comes you may remember that I told you. I didnot tell you this from the beginning, because I was with you;
Et nunc vado ad eum qui misit me ; et nemo ex vobis interrogat me : Quo vadis ?5 but now I am going to the one who sent me. Not one of you asks, 'Where are you going?'
sed quia hæc locutus sum vobis, tristitia implevit cor vestrum.6 Yet you are sad at heart because I have told you this.
I am telling you the truth: it is for your own good that I am going, because unless I go, theParaclete wil not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
Et cum venerit ille, arguet mundum de peccato, et de justitia, et de judicio.8 And when he comes, he wil show the world how wrong it was, about sin, and about who was in theright, and about judgement:
De peccato quidem, quia non crediderunt in me.9 about sin: in that they refuse to believe in me;
De justitia vero, quia ad Patrem vado, et jam non videbitis me.10 about who was in the right: in that I am going to the Father and you will see me no more;
De judicio autem, quia princeps hujus mundi jam judicatus est.11 about judgement: in that the prince of this world is already condemned.
Adhuc multa habeo vobis dicere, sed non potestis portare modo.12 I still have many things to say to you but they would be too much for you to bear now.
However, when the Spirit of truth comes he will lead you to the complete truth, since he wil not bespeaking of his own accord, but wil say only what he has been told; and he wil reveal to you the things to come.
Ille me clarificabit, quia de meo accipiet, et annuntiabit vobis.14 He wil glorify me, since al he reveals to you wil be taken from what is mine.
Everything the Father has is mine; that is why I said: all he reveals to you wil be taken from what ismine.
Modicum, et jam non videbitis me ; et iterum modicum, et videbitis me : quia vado ad Patrem.16 In a short time you will no longer see me, and then a short time later you wil see me again.
Dixerunt ergo ex discipulis ejus ad invicem : Quid est hoc quod dicit nobis : Modicum, et non videbitis me ; et iterum modicum, et videbitis me, et quia vado ad Patrem ?17 Then some of his disciples said to one another, 'What does he mean, "In a short time you wil nolonger see me, and then a short time later you wil see me again," and, "I am going to the Father"?
Dicebant ergo : Quid est hoc quod dicit : Modicum ? nescimus quid loquitur.18 What is this "short time"? We don't know what he means.'
Cognovit autem Jesus, quia volebant eum interrogare, et dixit eis : De hoc quæritis inter vos quia dixi : Modicum, et non videbitis me ; et iterum modicum, et videbitis me.19 Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, so he said, 'You are asking one another what I meantby saying, "In a short time you wil no longer see me, and then a short time later you wil see me again."
In al truth I tell you, you wil be weeping and wailing while the world wil rejoice; you will be sorrowful,but your sorrow wil turn to joy.
Mulier cum parit, tristitiam habet, quia venit hora ejus ; cum autem pepererit puerum, jam non meminit pressuræ propter gaudium, quia natus est homo in mundum.21 A woman in childbirth suffers, because her time has come; but when she has given birth to the childshe forgets the suffering in her joy that a human being has been born into the world.
Et vos igitur nunc quidem tristitiam habetis, iterum autem videbo vos, et gaudebit cor vestrum : et gaudium vestrum nemo tollet a vobis.22 So it is with you: you are sad now, but I shal see you again, and your hearts wil be ful of joy, andthat joy no one shal take from you.
Et in illo die me non rogabitis quidquam. Amen, amen dico vobis : si quid petieritis Patrem in nomine meo, dabit vobis.23 When that day comes, you will not ask me any questions. In all truth I tel you, anything you ask fromthe Father he wil grant in my name.
Until now you have not asked anything in my name. Ask and you wil receive, and so your joy wil becomplete.
Hæc in proverbiis locutus sum vobis. Venit hora cum jam non in proverbiis loquar vobis, sed palam de Patre annuntiabo vobis :25 I have been tel ing you these things in veiled language. The hour is coming when I shall no longerspeak to you in veiled language but tell you about the Father in plain words.
in illo die in nomine meo petetis : et non dico vobis quia ego rogabo Patrem de vobis :26 When that day comes you wil ask in my name; and I do not say that I shal pray to the Father for you,
ipse enim Pater amat vos, quia vos me amastis, et credidistis, quia ego a Deo exivi.27 because the Father himself loves you for loving me, and believing that I came from God.
Exivi a Patre, et veni in mundum : iterum relinquo mundum, et vado ad Patrem.28 I came from the Father and have come into the world and now I am leaving the world to go to theFather.'
Dicunt ei discipuli ejus : Ecce nunc palam loqueris, et proverbium nullum dicis :29 His disciples said, 'Now you are speaking plainly and not using veiled language.
nunc scimus quia scis omnia, et non opus est tibi ut quis te interroget : in hoc credimus quia a Deo existi.30 Now we see that you know everything and need not wait for questions to be put into words; becauseof this we believe that you came from God.'
Respondit eis Jesus : Modo creditis ?31 Jesus answered them: Do you believe at last?
ecce venit hora, et jam venit, ut dispergamini unusquisque in propria, et me solum relinquatis : et non sum solus, quia Pater mecum est.32 Listen; the time wil come -- indeed it has come already -- when you are going to be scattered, eachgoing his own way and leaving me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
Hæc locutus sum vobis, ut in me pacem habeatis. In mundo pressuram habebitis : sed confidite, ego vici mundum.33 I have told you al this so that you may find peace in me. In the world you wil have hardship, but becourageous: I have conquered the world.
