VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 In principio erat Verbum,
et Verbum erat apud Deum,
et Deus erat Verbum.
1 In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.
2 Hoc erat in principio apud Deum.
2 He was with God in the beginning.
3 Omnia per ipsum facta sunt :
et sine ipso factum est nihil, quod factum est.
3 Through him al things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him.
4 In ipso vita erat,
et vita erat lux hominum :
4 What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men;
5 et lux in tenebris lucet,
et tenebræ eam non comprehenderunt.
5 and light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.
6 Fuit homo
missus a Deo,
cui nomen erat Joannes.
6 A man came, sent by God. His name was John.
7 Hic venit in testimonium
ut testimonium perhiberet de lumine,
ut omnes crederent per illum.
7 He came as a witness, to bear witness to the light, so that everyone might believe through him.
8 Non erat ille lux,
sed ut testimonium perhiberet de lumine.
8 He was not the light, he was to bear witness to the light.
9 Erat lux vera,
quæ illuminat omnem hominem
venientem in hunc mundum.
9 The Word was the real light that gives light to everyone; he was coming into the world.
10 In mundo erat,
et mundus per ipsum factus est,
et mundus eum non cognovit.
10 He was in the world that had come into being through him, and the world did not recognise him.
11 In propria venit,
et sui eum non receperunt.
11 He came to his own and his own people did not accept him.
12 Quotquot autem receperunt eum,
dedit eis potestatem filios Dei fieri,
his qui credunt in nomine ejus :
12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believed inhis name
13 qui non ex sanguinibus,
neque ex voluntate carnis,
neque ex voluntate viri,
sed ex Deo nati sunt.
13 who were born not from human stock or human desire or human will but from God himself.
14 Et Verbum caro factum est,
et habitavit in nobis :
et vidimus gloriam ejus,
gloriam quasi unigeniti a Patre
plenum gratiæ et veritatis.
14 The Word became flesh, he lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory that he has from theFather as only Son of the Father, ful of grace and truth.
15 Joannes testimonium perhibet de ipso,
et clamat dicens :
Hic erat quem dixi :
Qui post me venturus est,
ante me factus est :
quia prior me erat.
15 John witnesses to him. He proclaims: 'This is the one of whom I said: He who comes after me haspassed ahead of me because he existed before me.'
16 Et de plenitudine ejus
nos omnes accepimus, et gratiam pro gratia :
16 Indeed, from his ful ness we have, al of us, received -- one gift replacing another,
17 quia lex per Moysen data est,
gratia et veritas per Jesum Christum facta est.
17 for the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ.
18 Deum nemo vidit umquam :
unigenitus Filius, qui est in sinu Patris,
ipse enarravit.
18 No one has ever seen God; it is the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made himknown.
19 Et hoc est testimonium Joannis, quando miserunt Judæi ab Jerosolymis sacerdotes et Levitas ad eum ut interrogarent eum : Tu quis es ?19 This was the witness of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to askhim, 'Who are you?'
20 Et confessus est, et non negavit, et confessus est : Quia non sum ego Christus.20 He declared, he did not deny but declared, 'I am not the Christ.'
21 Et interrogaverunt eum : Quid ergo ? Elias es tu ? Et dixit : Non sum. Propheta es tu ? Et respondit : Non.21 So they asked, 'Then are you Elijah?' He replied, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.'
22 Dixerunt ergo ei : Quis es ut responsum demus his qui miserunt nos ? quid dicis de teipso ?22 So they said to him, 'Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What haveyou to say about yourself?'
23 Ait : Ego vox clamantis in deserto : Dirigite viam Domini, sicut dixit Isaias propheta.23 So he said, 'I am, as Isaiah prophesied: A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for theLord. Make his paths straight!'
24 Et qui missi fuerant, erant ex pharisæis.24 Now those who had been sent were Pharisees,
25 Et interrogaverunt eum, et dixerunt ei : Quid ergo baptizas, si tu non es Christus, neque Elias, neque propheta ?25 and they put this question to him, 'Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, andnot the Prophet?'
26 Respondit eis Joannes, dicens : Ego baptizo in aqua : medius autem vestrum stetit, quem vos nescitis.26 John answered them, 'I baptise with water; but standing among you -- unknown to you-
27 Ipse est qui post me venturus est, qui ante me factus est : cujus ego non sum dignus ut solvam ejus corrigiam calceamenti.27 is the one who is coming after me; and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandal.'
28 Hæc in Bethania facta sunt trans Jordanem, ubi erat Joannes baptizans.
28 This happened at Bethany, on the far side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.
29 Altera die vidit Joannes Jesum venientem ad se, et ait : Ecce agnus Dei, ecce qui tollit peccatum mundi.29 The next day, he saw Jesus coming towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God that takesaway the sin of the world.
30 Hic est de quo dixi : Post me venit vir qui ante me factus est : quia prior me erat :30 It was of him that I said, "Behind me comes one who has passed ahead of me because he existedbefore me."
31 et ego nesciebam eum, sed ut manifestetur in Israël, propterea veni ego in aqua baptizans.31 I did not know him myself, and yet my purpose in coming to baptise with water was so that he might berevealed to Israel.'
32 Et testimonium perhibuit Joannes, dicens : Quia vidi Spiritum descendentem quasi columbam de cælo, et mansit super eum.32 And John declared, 'I saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven and rest on him.
33 Et ego nesciebam eum : sed qui misit me baptizare in aqua, ille mihi dixit : Super quem videris Spiritum descendentem, et manentem super eum, hic est qui baptizat in Spiritu Sancto.33 I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, "The man onwhom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one who is to baptise with the Holy Spirit."
34 Et ego vidi : et testimonium perhibui quia hic est Filius Dei.
34 I have seen and I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.'
35 Altera die iterum stabat Joannes, et ex discipulis ejus duo.35 The next day as John stood there again with two of his disciples, Jesus went past,
36 Et respiciens Jesum ambulantem, dicit : Ecce agnus Dei.36 and John looked towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God.'
37 Et audierunt eum duo discipuli loquentem, et secuti sunt Jesum.37 And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.
38 Conversus autem Jesus, et videns eos sequentes se, dicit eis : Quid quæritis ? Qui dixerunt ei : Rabbi (quod dicitur interpretatum Magister), ubi habitas ?38 Jesus turned round, saw them following and said, 'What do you want?' They answered, 'Rabbi' --which means Teacher-'where do you live?'
39 Dicit eis : Venite et videte. Venerunt, et viderunt ubi maneret, et apud eum manserunt die illo : hora autem erat quasi decima.39 He replied, 'Come and see'; so they went and saw where he lived, and stayed with him that day. It wasabout the tenth hour.
40 Erat autem Andreas, frater Simonis Petri, unus ex duobus qui audierant a Joanne, et secuti fuerant eum.40 One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew, thebrother of Simon Peter.
41 Invenit hic primum fratrem suum Simonem, et dicit ei : Invenimus Messiam (quod est interpretatum Christus).41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother and say to him, 'We have found the Messiah' -- whichmeans the Christ-
42 Et adduxit eum ad Jesum. Intuitus autem eum Jesus, dixit : Tu es Simon, filius Jona ; tu vocaberis Cephas, quod interpretatur Petrus.42 and he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, 'You are Simon son of John; you are to becal ed Cephas' -- which means Rock.
43 In crastinum voluit exire in Galilæam, et invenit Philippum. Et dicit ei Jesus : Sequere me.43 The next day, after Jesus had decided to leave for Galilee, he met Philip and said, 'Follow me.'
44 Erat autem Philippus a Bethsaida, civitate Andreæ et Petri.44 Philip came from the same town, Bethsaida, as Andrew and Peter.
45 Invenit Philippus Nathanaël, et dicit ei : Quem scripsit Moyses in lege, et prophetæ, invenimus Jesum filium Joseph a Nazareth.45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and theprophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.'
46 Et dixit ei Nathanaël : A Nazareth potest aliquid boni esse ? Dicit ei Philippus : Veni et vide.46 Nathanael said to him, 'From Nazareth? Can anything good come from that place?' Philip replied,'Come and see.'
47 Vidit Jesus Nathanaël venientem ad se, et dicit de eo : Ecce vere Israëlita, in quo dolus non est.47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, 'There, truly, is an Israelite in whom there is nodeception.'
48 Dicit ei Nathanaël : Unde me nosti ? Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei : Priusquam te Philippus vocavit, cum esses sub ficu, vidi te.48 Nathanael asked, 'How do you know me?' Jesus replied, 'Before Philip came to call you, I saw youunder the fig tree.'
49 Respondit ei Nathanaël, et ait : Rabbi, tu es Filius Dei, tu es rex Israël.49 Nathanael answered, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the king of Israel.'
50 Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei : Quia dixi tibi : Vidi te sub ficu, credis ; majus his videbis.50 Jesus replied, 'You believe that just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You are going to seegreater things than that.'
51 Et dicit ei : Amen, amen dico vobis, videbitis cælum apertum, et angelos Dei ascendentes, et descendentes supra Filium hominis.51 And then he added, 'In al truth I tel you, you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascendingand descending over the Son of man.'
