VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Nolite judicare, ut non judicemini.1 'Do not judge, and you will not be judged;
In quo enim judicio judicaveritis, judicabimini : et in qua mensura mensi fueritis, remetietur vobis.2 because the judgements you give are the judgements you wil get, and the standard you use wil be thestandard used for you.
Quid autem vides festucam in oculo fratris tui, et trabem in oculo tuo non vides ?3 Why do you observe the splinter in your brother's eye and never notice the great log in your own?
aut quomodo dicis fratri tuo : Sine ejiciam festucam de oculo tuo, et ecce trabs est in oculo tuo ?4 And how dare you say to your brother, "Let me take that splinter out of your eye," when, look, there is agreat log in your own?
Take the log out of your own eye first, and then you wil see clearly enough to take thesplinter out of your brother's eye.
Nolite dare sanctum canibus : neque mittatis margaritas vestras ante porcos, ne forte conculcent eas pedibus suis, et conversi dirumpant vos.
'Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls in front of pigs, or they may trample themand then turn on you and tear you to pieces.
Petite, et dabitur vobis : quærite, et invenietis : pulsate, et aperietur vobis.7 'Ask, and it wil be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.
Omnis enim qui petit, accipit : et qui quærit, invenit : et pulsanti aperietur.8 Everyone who asks receives; everyone who searches finds; everyone who knocks will have the dooropened.
Aut quis est ex vobis homo, quem si petierit filius suus panem, numquid lapidem porriget ei ?9 Is there anyone among you who would hand his son a stone when he asked for bread?
aut si piscem petierit, numquid serpentem porriget ei ?10 Or would hand him a snake when he asked for a fish?
If you, then, evil as you are, know how to give your children what is good, how much more wil yourFather in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
Hæc est enim lex, et prophetæ.12 'So always treat others as you would like them to treat you; that is the Law and the Prophets.
Intrate per angustam portam : quia lata porta, et spatiosa via est, quæ ducit ad perditionem, et multi sunt qui intrant per eam.13 'Enter by the narrow gate, since the road that leads to destruction is wide and spacious, and manytake it;
but it is a narrow gate and a hard road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
Attendite a falsis prophetis, qui veniunt ad vos in vestimentis ovium, intrinsecus autem sunt lupi rapaces :15 'Beware of false prophets who come to you disguised as sheep but underneath are ravenous wolves.
a fructibus eorum cognoscetis eos. Numquid colligunt de spinis uvas, aut de tribulis ficus ?16 You wil be able to tel them by their fruits. Can people pick grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?
Sic omnis arbor bona fructus bonos facit : mala autem arbor malos fructus facit.17 In the same way, a sound tree produces good fruit but a rotten tree bad fruit.
Non potest arbor bona malos fructus facere : neque arbor mala bonos fructus facere.18 A sound tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor a rotten tree bear good fruit.
Omnis arbor, quæ non facit fructum bonum, excidetur, et in ignem mittetur.19 Any tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown on the fire.
Igitur ex fructibus eorum cognoscetis eos.
I repeat, you wil be able to tel them by their fruits.
It is not anyone who says to me, "Lord, Lord," who wil enter the kingdom of Heaven, but the personwho does the wil of my Father in heaven.
Multi dicent mihi in illa die : Domine, Domine, nonne in nomine tuo prophetavimus, et in nomine tuo dæmonia ejecimus, et in nomine tuo virtutes multas fecimus ?22 When the day comes many wil say to me, "Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, drive outdemons in your name, work many miracles in your name?"
Et tunc confitebor illis : Quia numquam novi vos : discedite a me, qui operamini iniquitatem.23 Then I shal tel them to their faces: I have never known you; away from me, al evil doers!
Therefore, everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on rock.
et descendit pluvia, et venerunt flumina, et flaverunt venti, et irruerunt in domum illam, et non cecidit : fundata enim erat super petram.25 Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and hurled themselves against that house, and it did not fal :it was founded on rock.
But everyone who listens to these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a stupid manwho built his house on sand.
et descendit pluvia, et venerunt flumina, et flaverunt venti, et irruerunt in domum illam, et cecidit, et fuit ruina illius magna.27 Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and struck that house, and it fell; and what a fall it had!'
Et factum est : cum consummasset Jesus verba hæc, admirabantur turbæ super doctrina ejus.28 Jesus had now finished what he wanted to say, and his teaching made a deep impression on thepeople
Erat enim docens eos sicut potestatem habens, et non sicut scribæ eorum, et pharisæi.29 because he taught them with authority, unlike their own scribes.
