VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
In illo tempore abiit Jesus per sata sabbato : discipuli autem ejus esurientes cœperunt vellere spicas, et manducare.1 At that time Jesus went through the cornfields one Sabbath day. His disciples were hungry and beganto pick ears of corn and eat them.
The Pharisees noticed it and said to him, 'Look, your disciples are doing something that is forbiddenon the Sabbath.'
But he said to them, 'Have you not read what David did when he and his fol owers were hungry-
quomodo intravit in domum Dei, et panes propositionis comedit, quos non licebat ei edere, neque his qui cum eo erant, nisi solis sacerdotibus ?4 how he went into the house of God and they ate the loaves of the offering although neither he nor hisfol owers were permitted to eat them, but only the priests?
aut non legistis in lege quia sabbatis sacerdotes in templo sabbatum violant, et sine crimine sunt ?5 Or again, have you not read in the Law that on the Sabbath day the Temple priests break the Sabbathwithout committing any fault?
Dico autem vobis, quia templo major est hic.6 Now here, I tel you, is something greater than the Temple.
Si autem sciretis, quid est : Misericordiam volo, et non sacrificium : numquam condemnassetis innocentes :7 And if you had understood the meaning of the words: Mercy is what pleases me, not sacrifice, youwould not have condemned the blameless.
dominus enim est Filius hominis etiam sabbati.
For the Son of man is master of the Sabbath.'
Et cum inde transisset, venit in synagogam eorum.9 He moved on from there and went to their synagogue;
Et ecce homo manum habens aridam, et interrogabant eum, dicentes : Si licet sabbatis curare ? ut accusarent eum.10 now a man was there with a withered hand. They asked him, 'Is it permitted to cure somebody on theSabbath day?' hoping for something to charge him with.
But he said to them, 'If any one of you here had only one sheep and it fell down a hole on theSabbath day, would he not get hold of it and lift it out?
Quanto magis melior est homo ove ? itaque licet sabbatis benefacere.12 Now a man is far more important than a sheep, so it fol ows that it is permitted on the Sabbath day todo good.'
Tunc ait homini : Extende manum tuam. Et extendit, et restituta est sanitati sicut altera.13 Then he said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand.' He stretched it out and his hand was restored, assound as the other one.
Exeuntes autem pharisæi, consilium faciebant adversus eum, quomodo perderent eum.14 At this the Pharisees went out and began to plot against him, discussing how to destroy him.
Jesus autem sciens recessit inde : et secuti sunt eum multi, et curavit eos omnes :15 Jesus knew this and withdrew from the district. Many fol owed him and he cured them al
et præcepit eis ne manifestum eum facerent.16 but warned them not to make him known.
Ut adimpleretur quod dictum est per Isaiam prophetam, dicentem :17 This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:
Ecce puer meus, quem elegi, dilectus meus,
in quo bene complacuit animæ meæ.
Ponam spiritum meum super eum,
et judicium gentibus nuntiabit.
Look! My servant whom I have chosen, my beloved, in whom my soul delights, I wil send my Spiritupon him, and he wil present judgement to the nations;
Non contendet, neque clamabit,
neque audiet aliquis in plateis vocem ejus :
he wil not brawl or cry out, his voice is not heard in the streets,
arundinem quassatam non confringet,
et linum fumigans non extinguet,
donec ejiciat ad victoriam judicium :
he wil not break the crushed reed, or snuff the faltering wick,
et in nomine ejus gentes sperabunt.
until he has made judgement victorious; in him the nations will put their hope.
Tunc oblatus est ei dæmonium habens, cæcus, et mutus, et curavit eum ita ut loqueretur, et videret.22 Then they brought to him a blind and dumb demoniac; and he cured him, so that the dumb man couldspeak and see.
Et stupebant omnes turbæ, et dicebant : Numquid hic est filius David ?23 Al the people were astounded and said, 'Can this be the son of David?'
Pharisæi autem audientes, dixerunt : Hic non ejicit dæmones nisi in Beelzebub principe dæmoniorum.24 But when the Pharisees heard this they said, 'The man drives out devils only through Beelzebul, thechief of the devils.'
Jesus autem sciens cogitationes eorum, dixit eis : Omne regnum divisum contra se desolabitur : et omnis civitas vel domus divisa contra se, non stabit.25 Knowing what was in their minds he said to them, 'Every kingdom divided against itself is heading forruin; and no town, no household divided against itself can last.
Et si Satanas Satanam ejicit, adversus se divisus est : quomodo ergo stabit regnum ejus ?26 Now if Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself; so how can his kingdom last?
Et si ego in Beelzebub ejicio dæmones, filii vestri in quo ejiciunt ? ideo ipsi judices vestri erunt.27 And if it is through Beelzebul that I drive devils out, through whom do your own experts drive themout? They shal be your judges, then.
Si autem ego in Spiritu Dei ejicio dæmones, igitur pervenit in vos regnum Dei.28 But if it is through the Spirit of God that I drive out devils, then be sure that the kingdom of God hascaught you unawares.
Aut quomodo potest quisquam intrare in domum fortis, et vasa ejus diripere, nisi prius alligaverit fortem ? et tunc domum illius diripiet.29 'Or again, how can anyone make his way into a strong man's house and plunder his property unlesshe has first tied up the strong man? Only then can he plunder his house.
Qui non est mecum, contra me est ; et qui non congregat mecum, spargit.30 'Anyone who is not with me is against me, and anyone who does not gather in with me throws away.
Ideo dico vobis : Omne peccatum et blasphemia remittetur hominibus, Spiritus autem blasphemia non remittetur.31 And so I tel you, every human sin and blasphemy will be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spiritwil not be forgiven.
And anyone who says a word against the Son of man wil be forgiven; but no one who speaks againstthe Holy Spirit wil be forgiven either in this world or in the next.
Aut facite arborem bonam, et fructum ejus bonum : aut facite arborem malam, et fructum ejus malum : siquidem ex fructu arbor agnoscitur.33 'Make a tree sound and its fruit wil be sound; make a tree rotten and its fruit will be rotten. For thetree can be told by its fruit.
Progenies viperarum, quomodo potestis bona loqui, cum sitis mali ? ex abundantia enim cordis os loquitur.34 You brood of vipers, how can your speech be good when you are evil? For words flow out of what fil sthe heart.
Bonus homo de bono thesauro profert bona : et malus homo de malo thesauro profert mala.35 Good people draw good things from their store of goodness; bad people draw bad things from theirstore of badness.
So I tel you this, that for every unfounded word people utter they wil answer on Judgement Day,
since it is by your words you wil be justified, and by your words condemned.'
Tunc responderunt ei quidam de scribis et pharisæis, dicentes : Magister, volumus a te signum videre.38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees spoke up. 'Master,' they said, 'we should like to see a sign from you.'
Qui respondens ait illis : Generatio mala et adultera signum quærit : et signum non dabitur ei, nisi signum Jonæ prophetæ.39 He replied, 'It is an evil and unfaithful generation that asks for a sign! The only sign it wil be given isthe sign of the prophet Jonah.
Sicut enim fuit Jonas in ventre ceti tribus diebus, et tribus noctibus, sic erit Filius hominis in corde terræ tribus diebus et tribus noctibus.40 For as Jonah remained in the belly of the sea-monster for three days and three nights, so wil the Sonof man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.
Viri Ninivitæ surgent in judicio cum generatione ista, et condemnabunt eam : quia pœnitentiam egerunt in prædicatione Jonæ, et ecce plus quam Jonas hic.41 On Judgement Day the men of Nineveh will appear against this generation and they wil be itscondemnation, because when Jonah preached they repented; and look, there is something greater than Jonahhere.
Regina austri surget in judicio cum generatione ista, et condemnabit eam : quia venit a finibus terræ audire sapientiam Salomonis, et ecce plus quam Salomon hic.42 On Judgement Day the Queen of the South wil appear against this generation and be itscondemnation, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and look, there issomething greater than Solomon here.
Cum autem immundus spiritus exierit ab homine, ambulat per loca arida, quærens requiem, et non invenit.43 'When an unclean spirit goes out of someone it wanders through waterless country looking for aplace to rest, and cannot find one.
Tunc dicit : Revertar in domum meam, unde exivi. Et veniens invenit eam vacantem, scopis mundatam, et ornatam.44 Then it says, "I wil return to the home I came from." But on arrival, finding it unoccupied, swept andtidied,
it then goes off and col ects seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and set uphouse there, and so that person ends up worse off than before. That is what will happen to this wickedgeneration.'
Adhuc eo loquente ad turbas, ecce mater ejus et fratres stabant foris, quærentes loqui ei.46 He was still speaking to the crowds when suddenly his mother and his brothers were standingoutside and were anxious to have a word with him.
Dixit autem ei quidam : Ecce mater tua, et fratres tui foris stant quærentes te.47 still speaking to the crowds when suddenly his mother and his brothers were standing outside andwere anxious to have a word with him.
But to the man who told him this Jesus replied, 'Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?'
Et extendens manum in discipulos suos, dixit : Ecce mater mea, et fratres mei.49 And stretching out his hand towards his disciples he said, 'Here are my mother and my brothers.
Quicumque enim fecerit voluntatem Patris mei, qui in cælis est, ipse meus frater, et soror, et mater est.50 Anyone who does the wil of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.'
