VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Profectusque est populus de Haseroth, fixis tentoriis in deserto Pharan.1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,
Ibique locutus est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens :2 'Send out men, one from each tribe, to reconnoitre the land of Canaan which I am giving theIsraelites. Each of them is to be a leading man of the tribe.'
At Yahweh's order, Moses sent them from the desert of Paran. All of them were leading men of Israel.
These were their names: For the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur:
De tribu Ruben, Sammua filium Zechur.5 for the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;
De tribu Simeon, Saphat filium Huri.6 for the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;
De tribu Juda, Caleb filium Jephone.7 for the tribe of of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;
De tribu Issachar, Igal filium Joseph.8 for the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;
De tribu Ephraim, Osee filium Nun.9 for the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;
De tribu Benjamin, Phalti filium Raphu.10 for the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;
De tribu Zabulon, Geddiel filium Sodi.11 for the tribe of Joseph, for the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi;
De tribu Joseph, sceptri Manasse, Gaddi filium Susi.12 for the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemal i;
De tribu Dan, Ammiel filium Gemalli.13 for the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;
De tribu Aser, Sthur filium Michaël.14 for the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;
De tribu Nephthali, Nahabi filium Vapsi.15 for the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Machi.
De tribu Gad, Guel filium Machi.16 Such were the names of the men whom Moses sent to reconnoitre the country. Moses then gaveHoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.
Hæc sunt nomina virorum, quos misit Moyses ad considerandam terram : vocavitque Osee filium Nun, Josue.
Moses sent them to reconnoitre the land of Canaan, 'Go up into the Negeb,' he said, 'then go up intothe highlands.
Cumque veneritis ad montes,18 See what sort of country it is, and what sort of people the inhabitants are, whether they are strong orweak, few or many,
considerate terram, qualis sit : et populum qui habitator est ejus, utrum fortis sit an infirmus : si pauci numero an plures :19 what sort of land they live on, whether it is good or poor; what sort of towns they live in, whether theyare open or fortified;
ipsa terra, bona an mala : urbes quales, muratæ an absque muris :20 what sort of land it is, fertile or barren, wooded or open. Be bold, and bring back some of thecountry's produce.' It was the season for early grapes.
humus, pinguis an sterilis, nemorosa an absque arboribus. Confortamini, et afferte nobis de fructibus terræ. Erat autem tempus quando jam præcoquæ uvæ vesci possunt.21 They went up and reconnoitred the country from the desert of Zin to Rehob, the Pass of Hamath.
Cumque ascendissent, exploraverunt terram a deserto Sin, usque Rohob intrantibus Emath.22 They went up by way of the Negeb as far as Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, theAnakim, lived. (Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis in Egypt.)
Ascenderuntque ad meridiem, et venerunt in Hebron, ubi erant Achiman et Sisai et Tholmai filii Enac : nam Hebron septem annis ante Tanim urbem Ægypti condita est.23 Reaching the Vale of Eshcol, there they lopped off a vine branch with a cluster of grapes, which twoof them carried away on a pole, as wel as pomegranates and figs.
Pergentesque usque ad Torrentem botri, absciderunt palmitem cum uva sua, quem portaverunt in vecte duo viri. De malis quoque granatis et de ficis loci illius tulerunt :24 This place was called the Vale of Eshcol after the cluster which the Israelites cut there.
After forty days they returned from reconnoitring the country.
Reversique exploratores terræ post quadraginta dies, omni regione circuita,26 Making their way to Moses, Aaron and the whole community of Israel, in the desert of Paran, atKadesh, they made their report to them and the whole community, and displayed the country's produce.
Locutique eis et omni multitudini ostenderunt fructus terræ :27 This was the report they gave: 'We made our way into the country where you sent us. It does indeedflow with milk and honey; here is what it produces.
et narraverunt, dicentes : Venimus in terram, ad quam misisti nos, quæ revera fluit lacte et melle, ut ex his fructibus cognosci potest :28 At the same time, its inhabitants are a powerful people; the towns are fortified and very big; yes, andwe saw the Anakim there.
Stirpem Enac vidimus ibi.29 The Amalekites occupy the Negeb area, the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites the highlands, and theCanaanites the sea coast and the banks of the Jordan.'
Amalec habitat in meridie, Hethæus et Jebusæus et Amorrhæus in montanis : Chananæus vero moratur juxta mare et circa fluenta Jordanis.30 Caleb called the people round Moses to silence and then said, 'We must march in immediately andtake it; we are certainly able to conquer it.'
But the men who had been with him said, 'We cannot attack these people; they are stronger than weare.'
Alii vero, qui fuerant cum eo, dicebant : Nequaquam ad hunc populum valemus ascendere, quia fortior nobis est.32 And they began disparaging to the Israelites the country they had reconnoitred, saying, 'The countrywe have been to reconnoitre is a country that devours its inhabitants. Al the people we saw there were ofenormous size.
We saw giants there too (the Anakim, descended from the Giants). We felt like grasshoppers, andso we seemed to them.'
Ibi vidimus monstra quædam filiorum Enac de genere giganteo : quibus comparati, quasi locustæ videbamur.
