Amos 5

VULGATA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Audite verbum istud, quod ego levo super vos planctum : domus Israël cecidit, et non adjiciet ut resurgat.	1 Listen to this word which I utter against you, it is a dirge, House of Israel:
2 Virgo Israël projecta est in terram suam, non est qui suscitet eam.	2 She has fal en down, never to rise again, the virgin Israel. There she lies on her own soil, with no oneto lift her up.
3 Quia hæc dicit Dominus Deus : Urbs de qua egrediebantur mille, relinquentur in ea centum ; et de qua egrediebantur centum, relinquentur in ea decem in domo Israël.	3 For Lord Yahweh says this: The town which used to put a thousand in the field wil be left with ahundred, and the one which used to put a hundred will be left with ten, to fight for the House of Israel.
4 Quia hæc dicit Dominus domui Israël : Quærite me, et vivetis.	4 For Yahweh says this to the House of Israel: Seek me out and you wil survive,
5 Et nolite quærere Bethel, et in Galgalam nolite intrare, et in Bersabee non transibitis, quia Galgala captiva ducetur, et Bethel erit inutilis.	5 but do not seek out Bethel, do not go to Gilgal, do not journey to Beersheba, for Gilgal is going intocaptivity and Bethel will be brought to nothing.
6 Quærite Dominum, et vivite (ne forte comburatur ut ignis domus Joseph, et devorabit, et non erit qui extinguat Bethel :	6 Seek out Yahweh and you wil survive or else he wil sweep like fire upon the House of Joseph andburn it down, with no one at Bethel able to quench the flames.
7 qui convertitis in absinthium judicium, et justitiam in terra relinquitis) :	7 They turn justice into wormwood and throw uprightness to the ground.
8 facientem Arcturum et Orionem, et convertentem in mane tenebras, et diem in noctem mutantem ; qui vocat aquas maris, et effundit eas super faciem terræ ; Dominus nomen est ejus :	8 He it is who makes the Pleiades and Orion, who turns shadow dark as death into morning and day todarkest night, who summons the waters of the sea and pours them over the surface of the land. Yahweh is hisname.
9 qui subridet vastitatem super robustum, et depopulationem super potentem affert.	9 He brings destruction on the strong and ruin comes on the fortress.
10 Odio habuerunt corripientem in porta, et loquentem perfecte abominati sunt.	10 They hate the man who teaches justice at the city gate and detest anyone who declares the truth.
11 Idcirco, pro eo quod diripiebatis pauperem, et prædam electam tollebatis ab eo, domos quadro lapide ædificabitis, et non habitabitis in eis ; vineas plantabis amantissimas, et non bibetis vinum earum.	11 For trampling on the poor man and for extorting levies on his wheat: although you have built housesof dressed stone, you wil not live in them; although you have planted pleasant vineyards, you wil not drink winefrom them:
12 Quia cognovi multa scelera vestra, et fortia peccata vestra : hostes justi, accipientes munus, et pauperes deprimentes in porta.	12 for I know how many your crimes are and how outrageous your sins, you oppressors of the upright,who hold people to ransom and thrust the poor aside at the gates.
13 Ideo prudens in tempore illo tacebit, quia tempus malum est.	13 That is why anyone prudent keeps silent now, since the time is evil.
14 Quærite bonum, et non malum, ut vivatis ; et erit Dominus Deus exercituum vobiscum, sicut dixistis.	14 Seek good and not evil so that you may survive, and Yahweh, God Sabaoth, be with you as you claimhe is.
15 Odite malum et diligite bonum, et constituite in porta judicium : si forte misereatur Dominus Deus exercituum reliquiis Joseph.	15 Hate evil, love good, let justice reign at the city gate: it may be that Yahweh, God Sabaoth, wil takepity on the remnant of Joseph.
16 Propterea hæc dicit Dominus Deus exercituum, dominator : In omnibus plateis planctus ; et in cunctis quæ foris sunt, dicetur : Væ, væ ! et vocabunt agricolam ad luctum, et ad planctum eos qui sciunt plangere.	16 Therefore Yahweh Sabaoth, the Lord, says this: In every public square there wil be lamentation, inevery street they will cry out, 'Alas! Alas!' The farmer wil be called on to mourn, the professional mourners tolament,
17 Et in omnibus vineis erit planctus, quia pertransibo in medio tui, dicit Dominus.	17 and there wil be wailing in every vineyard, for I mean to pass through among you, Yahweh says.
18 Væ desiderantibus diem Domini ! ad quid eam vobis ? Dies Domini ista, tenebræ, et non lux.	18 Disaster for you who long for the Day of Yahweh! What will the Day of Yahweh mean for you? It wilmean darkness, not light,
19 Quomodo si fugiat vir a facie leonis, et occurrat ei ursus ; et ingrediatur domum, et innitatur manu sua super parietem, et mordeat eum coluber.	19 as when someone runs away from a lion, only to meet a bear; he goes into his house and puts hishand on the wal , only for a snake to bite him.
20 Numquid non tenebræ dies Domini, et non lux ; et caligo, et non splendor in ea ?	20 Will not the Day of Yahweh be darkness, not light, total y dark, without a ray of light?
21 Odi, et projeci festivitates vestras, et non capiam odorem cœtuum vestrorum.	21 I hate, I scorn your festivals, I take no pleasure in your solemn assemblies.
22 Quod si obtuleritis mihi holocautomata, et munera vestra, non suscipiam ; et vota pinguium vestrorum non respiciam.	22 When you bring me burnt offerings . . . your oblations, I do not accept them and I do not look at yourcommunion sacrifices of fat cattle.
23 Aufer a me tumultum carminum tuorum ; et cantica lyræ tuæ non audiam.	23 Spare me the din of your chanting, let me hear none of your strumming on lyres,
24 Et revelabitur quasi aqua judicium, et justitia quasi torrens fortis.	24 but let justice flow like water, and uprightness like a never-failing stream!
25 Numquid hostias et sacrificium obtulistis mihi in deserto quadraginta annis, domus Israël ?	25 Did you bring me sacrifices and oblations those forty years in the desert, House of Israel?
26 et portastis tabernaculum Moloch vestro, et imaginem idolorum vestrorum, sidus dei vestri, quæ fecistis vobis.	26 Now you must shoulder Sakkuth your king and the star of your God, Kaiwan, those idols you made foryourselves;
27 Et migrare vos faciam trans Damascum, dicit Dominus : Deus exercituum nomen ejus.	27 for I am about to drive you into captivity beyond Damascus, Yahweh says -- God Sabaoth is hisname.
