VULGATA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Anno tertio regni Baltassar regis, visio apparuit mihi. Ego Daniel, post id quod videram in principio,	1 In the third year of King Belshazzar a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after the one that had original yappeared to me.
2 vidi in visione mea, cum essem in Susis castro, quod est in Ælam regione : vidi autem in visione esse me super portam Ulai.	2 I gazed at the vision, and as I gazed I found myself in Susa, the citadel in the province of Elam; gazingat the vision, I found myself at the Ulai Gate.
3 Et levavi oculus meos, et vidi : et ecce aries unus stabat ante paludem, habens cornua excelsa, et unum excelsius altero atque succrescens. Postea	3 I raised my eyes to look, and I saw a ram standing in front of the gate. It had two horns; both were tal ,but one tal er than the other, and the one that rose the higher was the second.
4 vidi arietem cornibus ventilantem contra occidentem, et contra aquilonem, et contra meridiem, et omnes bestiæ non poterant resistere ei, neque liberari de manu ejus : fecitque secundum voluntatem suam, et magnificatus est.	4 I saw the ram butting westwards, northwards and southwards. No animal could stand up to it, nothingcould escape its power. It did as it pleased and became strong.
5 Et ego intelligebam : ecce autem hircus caprarum veniebat ab occidente super faciem totius terræ, et non tangebat terram : porro hircus habebat cornu insigne inter oculos suos.	5 This is what I observed: a he-goat from the west, encroaching over the entire surface of the worldthough never touching the ground, and between its eyes the goat had one majestic horn.
6 Et venit usque ad arietem illum cornutum, quem videram stantem ante portam, et cucurrit ad eum in impetu fortitudinis suæ.	6 It advanced on the two-horned ram, which I had seen standing in front of the gate, and charged at it inthe full force of its fury.
7 Cumque appropinquasset prope arietem, efferatus est in eum, et percussit arietem : et comminuit duo cornua ejus, et non poterat aries resistere ei : cumque eum misisset in terram, conculcavit, et nemo quibat liberare arietem de manu ejus.	7 I saw it reach the ram; it was enraged with the ram and struck it, breaking both its horns, so that theram was not strong enough to hold its ground; it threw it to the ground and trampled it underfoot; no one wasthere to rescue the ram.
8 Hircus autem caprarum magnus factus est nimis : cumque crevisset, fractum est cornu magnum, et orta sunt quatuor cornua subter illud per quatuor ventos cæli.	8 The he-goat then grew more powerful than ever; but at the height of its strength the great hornsnapped, and in its place sprouted four majestic horns, pointing to the four winds of heaven.
9 De uno autem ex eis egressum est cornu unum modicum : et factum est grande contra meridiem, et contra orientem, et contra fortitudinem.	9 From one of these, the smal one, sprang a horn which grew to great size towards south and east andtowards the Land of Splendour.
10 Et magnificatum est usque ad fortitudinem cæli : et dejecit de fortitudine, et de stellis, et conculcavit eas.	10 It grew right up to the armies of heaven and flung armies and stars to the ground, and trampled themunderfoot.
11 Et usque ad principem fortitudinis magnificatum est : et ab eo tulit juge sacrificium, et dejecit locum sanctificationis ejus.	11 It even challenged the power of the Prince of the army; it abolished the perpetual sacrifice andoverthrew the foundation of his sanctuary,
12 Robur autem datum est ei contra juge sacrificium propter peccata : et prosternetur veritas in terra, et faciet, et prosperabitur.	12 and the army too; over the sacrifice it installed iniquity and flung truth to the ground; the horn wasactive and successful.
13 Et audivi unum de sanctis loquentem : et dixit unus sanctus alteri nescio cui loquenti : Usquequo visio, et juge sacrificium, et peccatum desolationis quæ facta est : et sanctuarium, et fortitudo conculcabitur ?	13 I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one say to the speaker, 'How long is this vision to be --of perpetual sacrifice, of horrifying iniquity, of sanctuary and army trampled underfoot?'
14 Et dixit ei : Usque ad vesperam et mane, dies duo millia trecenti : et mundabitur sanctuarium.	14 The first replied, 'Until two thousand three hundred evenings and mornings have gone by: then thesanctuary wil have its rights restored.'
15 Factum est autem cum viderem ego Daniel visionem, et quærerem intelligentiam : ecce stetit in conspectu meo quasi species viri.	15 As I, Daniel, gazed at the vision and tried to understand it, I saw someone standing in front of me wholooked like a man.
16 Et audivi vocem viri inter Ulai : et clamavit, et ait : Gabriel, fac intelligere istam visionem.	16 I heard a human voice cry over the Ulai, 'Gabriel, tell him the meaning of the vision!'
17 Et venit, et stetit juxta ubi ego stabam : cumque venisset, pavens corrui in faciem meam : et ait ad me : Intellige, fili hominis, quoniam in tempore finis complebitur visio.	17 He approached the place where I was standing; as he approached, I was seized with terror and fellprostrate on the ground. 'Son of man,' he said to me, 'understand this: the vision shows the time of the End.'
18 Cumque loqueretur ad me, collapsus sum pronus in terram : et tetigit me, et statuit me in gradu meo,	18 He was stil speaking, when I fainted, face downwards on the ground. He touched me, however, andraised me to my feet.
19 dixitque mihi : Ego ostendam tibi quæ futura sunt in novissimo maledictionis : quoniam habet tempus finem suum.	19 'Come,' he said, 'I shall tel you what is going to happen when the Retribution is over, about the finaltimes.
20 Aries, quem vidisti habere cornua, rex Medorum est atque Persarum.	20 As for the ram which you saw, its two horns are the kings of Media and of Persia.
21 Porro hircus caprarum, rex Græcorum est ; et cornu grande, quod erat inter oculos ejus, ipse est rex primus.	21 The hairy he-goat is the king of Greece, the large horn between its eyes is the first king.
22 Quod autem fracto illo surrexerunt quatuor pro eo : quatuor reges de gente ejus consurgent, sed non in fortitudine ejus.	22 The horn which snapped and the four horns which sprouted in its place are four kingdoms rising fromhis nation but not having his strength.
23 Et post regnum eorum, cum creverint iniquitates, consurget rex impudens facie, et intelligens propositiones ;	23 'And at the end of their reign, when the measure of their sins is ful , a king wil arise, a proud-faced,ingenious-minded man.
24 et roborabitur fortitudo ejus, sed non in viribus suis : et supra quam credi potest, universa vastabit, et prosperabitur, et faciet. Et interficiet robustos, et populum sanctorum	24 His power will grow greater and greater, though not through any power of his own; he wil plotincredible schemes, he wil succeed in whatever he undertakes, he wil destroy powerful men and the holy ones,God's people.
25 secundum voluntatem suam, et dirigetur dolus in manu ejus : et cor suum magnificabit, et in copia rerum omnium occidet plurimos : et contra principem principum consurget, et sine manu conteretur.	25 Such wil be his resourcefulness of mind that all his treacherous activities wil succeed. He wil growarrogant of heart and destroy many people by taking them unawares. He wil chal enge the power of the Princeof princes but, without any human intervention, he will be broken.
26 Et visio vespere et mane, quæ dicta est, vera est : tu ergo visionem signa, quia post multos dies erit.	26 The vision of the evenings and the mornings which has been revealed is true, but you must keep thevision secret, for there are stil many days to go.'
27 Et ego Daniel langui, et ægrotavi per dies : cumque surrexissem, faciebam opera regis, et stupebam ad visionem, et non erat qui interpretaretur.	27 At this I, Daniel, lost consciousness; I was il for several days. Then I got up to discharge my duties inthe king's service, keeping the vision a secret and still not understanding what it meant.
