VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 Quod factum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam, de sermonibus siccitatis.1 The word of Yahweh that came to Jeremiah on the occasion of the drought.
2 Luxit Judæa, et portæ ejus corruerunt,
et obscuratæ sunt in terra,
et clamor Jerusalem ascendit.
2 'Judah is in mourning, her towns are pining, sinking to the ground; a cry goes up from Jerusalem.
3 Majores miserunt minores suos ad aquam :
venerunt ad hauriendum.
Non invenerunt aquam :
reportaverunt vasa sua vacua.
Confusi sunt, et afflicti,
et operuerunt capita sua.
3 The nobles send their servants for water, they come to the water-tanks, find no water, and return withtheir pitchers empty. Dismayed and bewildered, they cover their heads.
4 Propter terræ vastitatem,
quia non venit pluvia in terram,
confusi sunt agricolæ :
operuerunt capita sua.
4 Because the soil is al cracked since the country has had no rain; the farmers are dismayed, they covertheir heads.
5 Nam et cerva in agro peperit, et reliquit,
quia non erat herba.
5 Even the doe in the countryside giving birth abandons her young, for there is no grass;
6 Et onagri steterunt in rupibus ;
traxerunt ventum quasi dracones :
defecerunt oculi eorum,
quia non erat herba.
6 the wild donkeys standing on the bare heights gasp for air like jackals: their eyes grow dim for lack ofpasture.'
7 Si iniquitates nostræ responderint nobis, Domine,
fac propter nomen tuum :
quoniam multæ sunt aversiones nostræ :
tibi peccavimus.
7 Although our sins witness against us, Yahweh, for your name's sake, intervene! Yes, our acts ofinfidelity have been many, we have sinned against you!
8 Exspectatio Israël,
salvator ejus in tempore tribulationis,
quare quasi colonus futurus es in terra,
et quasi viator declinans ad manendum ?
8 Yahweh, hope of Israel, its Saviour in time of distress, why are you like a stranger in this country, like atravel er staying only for one night?
9 quare futurus es velut vir vagus,
ut fortis qui non potest salvare ?
Tu autem in nobis es, Domine,
et nomen tuum invocatum est super nos :
ne derelinquas nos.
9 Why are you like someone bemused, like a warrior who has no power to rescue? And yet, Yahweh, you are among us, we are called by your name. Do not desert us!
10 Hæc dicit Dominus populo huic,
qui dilexit movere pedes suos,
et non quievit,
et Domino non placuit :
Nunc recordabitur iniquitatum eorum,
et visitabit peccata eorum.
10 Yahweh says this about this people, 'They take such pleasure in darting hither and thither, theycannot restrain their feet! But Yahweh takes pleasure in them no longer; now he wil keep their guilt in mind andpunish their sins.'
11 Et dixit Dominus ad me :
Noli orare pro populo isto in bonum.
11 Yahweh then said to me, 'Do not intercede for this people or their welfare.
12 Cum jejunaverint,
non exaudiam preces eorum,
et si obtulerint holocautomata et victimas,
non suscipiam ea :
quoniam gladio, et fame, et peste consumam eos.
12 If they fast, I wil not listen to their plea; if they offer burnt offerings and cereal offerings I wil notaccept them. Rather, I shal make an end of them by sword, famine and plague.'
13 Et dixi : A, a, a, Domine Deus :
prophetæ dicunt eis :
Non videbitis gladium,
et fames non erit in vobis :
sed pacem veram dabit vobis in loco isto.
13 'Ah, Lord Yahweh,' I answered, 'here are the prophets telling them, "You will not see the sword, famine wil not touch you; I promise you true peace in this place." '
14 Et dicit Dominus ad me : Falso prophetæ vaticinantur in nomine meo :
non misi eos, et non præcepi eis,
neque locutus sum ad eos.
Visionem mendacem, et divinationem,
et fraudulentiam, et seductionem cordis sui,
prophetant vobis.
14 Then Yahweh said to me, 'The prophets are prophesying lies in my name; I have not sent them, Igave them no orders, I never spoke to them. Delusive visions, hol ow predictions, daydreams of their own, that iswhat they prophesy to you.
15 Idcirco hæc dicit Dominus
de prophetis qui prophetant in nomine meo,
quos ego non misi, dicentes :
Gladius et fames non erit in terra hac :
In gladio et fame consumentur prophetæ illi.
15 Therefore, Yahweh says this: The prophets who prophesy in my name when I have not sent them, and tel you there will be no sword or famine in this country, these same prophets will meet their end by swordand famine.
16 Et populi quibus prophetant
erunt projecti in viis Jerusalem
præ fame et gladio,
et non erit qui sepeliat eos :
ipsi et uxores eorum,
filii et filiæ eorum :
et effundam super eos malum suum.
16 And as for the people to whom they prophesy, they wil be tossed into the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and the sword, with not a soul to bury them: neither them nor their wives, nor their sons, northeir daughters. I shall pour their own wickedness down on them.
17 Et dices ad eos verbum istud :
Deducant oculi mei lacrimam per noctem et diem,
et non taceant,
quoniam contritione magna
contrita est virgo filia populi mei,
plaga pessima vehementer.
17 'So say this word to them: May my eyes shed tears night and day, unceasingly, since the daughter ofmy people has sustained a fearsome wound, a crippling injury.
18 Si egressus fuero ad agros,
ecce occisi gladio :
et si introiero in civitatem,
ecce attenuati fame.
Propheta quoque et sacerdos abierunt in terram quam ignorabant.
18 If I go into the countryside, there lie those killed by the sword; if I go into the city, I see people torturedwith hunger; even prophets and priests roam the country at their wits' end.'
19 Numquid projiciens abjecisti Judam ?
aut Sion abominata est anima tua ?
quare ergo percussisti nos ita ut nulla sit sanitas ?
Exspectavimus pacem,
et non est bonum :
et tempus curationis,
et ecce turbatio.
19 Have you rejected Judah altogether? Does your very soul revolt at Zion? Why have you struck usdown without hope of cure? We were hoping for peace -- no good came of it! For the moment of cure -- nothingbut terror!
20 Cognovimus, Domine, impietates nostras,
iniquitates patrum nostrorum,
quia peccavimus tibi.
20 Yahweh, we acknowledge our wickedness and our ancestors' guilt: we have indeed sinned againstyou.
21 Ne des nos in opprobrium, propter nomen tuum,
neque facias nobis contumeliam solii gloriæ tuæ :
recordare, ne irritum facias fœdus tuum nobiscum.
21 For your name's sake do not reject us, do not dishonour the throne of your glory. Remember us; donot break your covenant with us.
22 Numquid sunt in sculptilibus gentium qui pluant ?
aut cæli possunt dare imbres ?
nonne tu es Dominus Deus noster, quem exspectavimus ?
tu enim fecisti omnia hæc.
22 Can any of the nations' Futile Ones make it rain? Can the heavens of their own accord give showers? Are you not the one, Yahweh our God? In you is our hope, since you make al these things.
