VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 In die illa visitabit Dominus
in gladio suo duro, et grandi, et forti,
super Leviathan, serpentem vectem,
et super Leviathan, serpentem tortuosum,
et occidet cetum qui in mari est.
1 That day Yahweh wil punish, with his unyielding sword, massive and strong, Leviathan the fleeingserpent, Leviathan the coiling serpent; he wil kil that dragon that lives in the sea.
2 In die illa vinea meri cantabit ei.
2 That day, sing of the splendid vineyard!
3 Ego Dominus qui servo eam ;
repente propinabo ei.
Ne forte visitetur contra eam,
nocte et die servo eam.
3 I, Yahweh, am its guardian, from time to time I water it; so that no harm befal it, I guard it night andday.
4 Indignatio non est mihi.
Quis dabit me spinam et veprem in prælio ?
gradiar super eam,
succendam eam pariter.
4 -I do not have a wall. Who can reduce me to brambles and thorn-bushes? -I shal make war andtrample on it and at the same time burn it.
5 An potius tenebit fortitudinem meam ?
faciet pacem mihi,
pacem faciet mihi.
5 Or should they beg for my protection, let them make their peace with me, peace let them make withme.
6 Qui ingrediuntur impetu ad Jacob,
florebit et germinabit Israël,
et implebunt faciem orbis semine.
6 In days to come, Jacob will take root, Israel wil bud and blossom and the surface of the world be onevast harvest.
7 Numquid juxta plagam percutientis se percussit eum ?
aut sicut occidit interfectos ejus, sic occisus est ?
7 Has he struck him as he was struck by those who struck him? Has he murdered him as he wasmurdered by those who murdered him?
8 In mensura contra mensuram,
cum abjecta fuerit, judicabis eam ;
meditatus est in spiritu suo duro
per diem æstus.
8 By expel ing, by excluding him, you have executed a sentence, he has blown him away with a breathas rough as the east wind.
9 Idcirco super hoc dimittetur iniquitas domui Jacob ;
et iste omnis fructus : ut auferatur peccatum ejus,
cum posuerit omnes lapides altaris
sicut lapides cineris allisos :
non stabunt luci et delubra.
9 For that is how Jacob's guilt wil be forgiven, such wil be the result of renouncing his sin, when al thealtar-stones have been smashed to pieces like lumps of chalk, when the sacred poles and incense-altars standno longer.
10 Civitas enim munita desolata erit ;
speciosa relinquetur, et dimittetur quasi desertum ;
ibi pascetur vitulus,
et ibi accubabit, et consumet summitates ejus.
10 For the fortified city is abandoned now, deserted, forsaken as a desert where calves browse, wherethey lie down, destroying its branches.
11 In siccitate messes illius conterentur.
Mulieres venientes, et docentes eam ;
non est enim populus sapiens :
propterea non miserebitur ejus qui fecit eum,
et qui formavit eum non parcet ei.
11 When boughs go dry, they get burnt, women come and use them for firewood. Now, this is a peoplethat does not understand, and so its Maker wil not take pity on it, he who formed it wil not show it any mercy.
12 Et erit : in die illa
percutiet Dominus
ab alveo fluminis usque ad torrentem Ægypti ;
et vos congregabimini unus et unus, filii Israël.
12 When that day comes, Yahweh wil start his threshing from the course of the River to the Torrent ofEgypt, and you will be gathered one by one, Israelites!
13 Et erit : in die illa clangetur in tuba magna ;
et venient qui perditi fuerant de terra Assyriorum,
et qui ejecti erant in terra Ægypti,
et adorabunt Dominum
in monte sancto in Jerusalem.
13 When that day comes, the great ram's-horn will be sounded, and those lost in Assyria will come, andthose banished to Egypt, and they wil worship Yahweh on the holy mountain, in Jerusalem.
