VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Igitur in octavodecimo anno regni Jeroboam filii Nabat, regnavit Abiam super Judam.1 In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijam became king of Judah
Tribus annis regnavit in Jerusalem : nomen matris ejus Maacha filia Abessalom.2 and reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah descendant of Absalom.
Ambulavitque in omnibus peccatis patris sui, quæ fecerat ante eum : nec erat cor ejus perfectum cum Domino Deo suo, sicut cor David patris ejus.3 In everything he fol owed the sinful example of his father before him; his heart was not wholly withYahweh his God, as the heart of David his ancestor had been.
Sed propter David dedit ei Dominus Deus suus lucernam in Jerusalem, ut suscitaret filium ejus post eum, et statueret Jerusalem :4 However, for David's sake, Yahweh his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, with a son to succeed him,so keeping Jerusalem secure;
eo quod fecisset David rectum in oculis Domini, et non declinasset ab omnibus quæ præceperat ei cunctis diebus vitæ suæ, excepto sermone Uriæ Hethæi.5 for David had done what Yahweh regarded as right and had never in all his life disobeyed whatever hecommanded him (except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite).
Fuitque prælium inter Abiam et inter Jeroboam.7 The rest of the history of Abijam, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annals of theKings of Judah? Abijam and Jeroboam made war on each other.
When Abijam fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in the City of David; his son Asa succeededhim.
In anno ergo vigesimo Jeroboam regis Israël regnavit Asa rex Juda,9 In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah
et quadraginta et uno anno regnavit in Jerusalem. Nomen matris ejus Maacha filia Abessalom.10 and reigned for forty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah descendant ofAbsalom.
Et fecit Asa rectum ante conspectum Domini, sicut David pater ejus :11 Asa did what Yahweh regards as right, as his ancestor David had done.
et abstulit effeminatos de terra, purgavitque universas sordes idolorum quæ fecerant patres ejus.12 He drove the male prostitutes out of the country and got rid of all the idols which his ancestors hadmade.
Insuper et Maacham matrem suam amovit, ne esset princeps in sacris Priapi, et in luco ejus quem consecraverat : subvertitque specum ejus, et confregit simulacrum turpissimum, et combussit in torrente Cedron :13 He even deprived his grandmother Maacah of the dignity of Great Lady for having made an obscenityfor Asherah; Asa cut down her obscenity and burnt it in the ravine of the Kidron.
excelsa autem non abstulit. Verumtamen cor Asa perfectum erat cum Domino cunctis diebus suis :14 Though the high places were not abolished, Asa's heart was loyal to Yahweh throughout his life.
et intulit ea quæ sanctificaverat pater suus, et voverat, in domum Domini, argentum, et aurum, et vasa.
He deposited his father's and his own dedicated gifts of silver, gold and sacred vessels in the Templeof Yahweh.
Bellum autem erat inter Asa, et Baasa regem Israël cunctis diebus eorum.16 Asa and Baasha king of Israel were at war with each other throughout their reigns.
Ascendit quoque Baasa rex Israël in Judam, et ædificavit Rama, ut non posset quispiam egredi vel ingredi de parte Asa regis Juda.17 Baasha king of Israel marched on Judah and fortified Ramah to blockade Asa king of Judah.
Tollens itaque Asa omne argentum et aurum quod remanserat in thesauris domus Domini, et in thesauris domus regiæ, et dedit illud in manus servorum suorum : et misit ad Benadad filium Tabremon filii Hezion, regem Syriæ, qui habitabat in Damasco, dicens :18 Asa then took al the remaining silver and gold left in the treasuries of the Temple of Yahweh and theroyal palace. Entrusting this to his servants, King Asa sent them with the fol owing message to Ben-Hadad sonof Tabrimmon, son of Hezion, the king of Aram who lived in Damascus,
Fœdus est inter me et te, et inter patrem meum et patrem tuum : ideo misi tibi munera, argentum et aurum : et peto ut venias, et irritum facias fœdus quod habes cum Baasa rege Israël, et recedat a me.19 'Let us make an al iance between myself and yourself, between my father and your father! Look, Ihave sent you a gift of silver and gold. Come, break off your al iance with Baasha king of Israel, which wil makehim withdraw from me.'
Acquiescens Benadad regi Asa, misit principes exercitus sui in civitates Israël, et percusserunt Ahion, et Dan, et Abeldomum Maacha, et universam Cenneroth, omnem scilicet terram Nephthali.20 Ben-Hadad listened favourably to King Asa, and sent the generals of his armies to attack the towns ofIsrael; he ravaged Ijon, Dan, Abel-Beth-Maacah, al Chinneroth, and the whole territory of Naphtali.
Quod cum audisset Baasa, intermisit ædificare Rama, et reversus est in Thersa.21 When Baasha heard this he gave up fortifying Ramah and retired to Tirzah.
Et tulerunt lapides de Rama, et ligna ejus, quibus ædificaverat Baasa, et exstruxit de eis rex Asa Gabaa Benjamin, et Maspha.22 King Asa then summoned al Judah, no one was exempt; they took away the stones and timber withwhich Baasha had been fortifying Ramah, and King Asa used them to fortify Geba of Benjamin and Mizpah.
Verumtamen in tempore senectutis suæ doluit pedes.23 The rest of the history of Asa, al his valour, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of theAnnals of the Kings of Judah? In his old age, however, he contracted a disease of his feet.
When Asa fell asleep with his ancestors, he was buried with his ancestors in the City of his ancestorDavid; his son Jehoshaphat succeeded him.
Nadab vero filius Jeroboam regnavit super Israël anno secundo Asa regis Juda : regnavitque super Israël duobus annis.25 Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and hereigned over Israel for two years.
Et fecit quod malum est in conspectu Domini, et ambulavit in viis patris sui, et in peccatis ejus quibus peccare fecit Israël.26 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh; he copied his father's example and the sin into which he hadled Israel.
Insidiatus est autem ei Baasa filius Ahiæ de domo Issachar, et percussit eum in Gebbethon, quæ est urbs Philisthinorum : siquidem Nadab et omnis Israël obsidebant Gebbethon.27 Baasha son of Ahijah, of the House of Issachar, plotted against him and murdered him at Gibbethon,a Philistine town which Nadab and all Israel were besieging.
Interfecit ergo illum Baasa in anno tertio Asa regis Juda, et regnavit pro eo.28 Baasha kil ed Nadab and succeeded him in the third year of Asa king of Judah.
Cumque regnasset, percussit omnem domum Jeroboam : non dimisit ne unam quidem animam de semine ejus donec deleret eum, juxta verbum Domini quod locutus fuerat in manu servi sui Ahiæ Silonitis,29 No sooner was he king than he butchered the entire House of Jeroboam, not sparing a soul, and putan end to it, just as Yahweh had foretold through his servant Ahijah of Shiloh,
propter peccata Jeroboam, quæ peccaverat, et quibus peccare fecerat Israël : et propter delictum quo irritaverat Dominum Deum Israël.30 because of the sins which he had committed and into which he had led Israel, and because he hadprovoked the anger of Yahweh, God of Israel.
The rest of the history of Nadab, his entire career, is this not recorded in
the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Israel?
Anno tertio Asa regis Juda, regnavit Baasa filius Ahiæ super omnem Israël in Thersa, viginti quatuor annis.33 In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha son of Ahijah became king of Israel at Tirzah fortwenty-four years.
Et fecit malum coram Domino, ambulavitque in via Jeroboam, et in peccatis ejus quibus peccare fecit Israël.34 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh; he copied the example of Jeroboam and the sin into which hehad led Israel.
