Abraham vero aliam duxit uxorem nomine Ceturam :1 Abraham married another wife whose name was Keturah;
quæ peperit ei Zamran et Jecsan, et Madan, et Madian, et Jesboc, et Sue.2 and she bore him Zimram, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah.
Jecsan quoque genuit Saba et Dadan. Filii Dadan fuerunt Assurim, et Latusim, et Loomin.3 Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan, and the descendants of Dedan were the Asshurites, theLetushim and the Leummim.
At vero ex Madian ortus est Epha, et Opher, et Henoch, et Abida, et Eldaa : omnes hi filii Ceturæ.4 The descendants of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida and Eldaah. Al these were sons ofKeturah.
Deditque Abraham cuncta quæ possederat, Isaac :5 Abraham left al his possessions to Isaac.
filiis autem concubinarum largitus est munera, et separavit eos ab Isaac filio suo, dum adhuc ipse viveret, ad plagam orientalem.6 To the sons of his concubines Abraham made grants during his lifetime, sending them away from hisson Isaac eastward, to the Land of the East.
Fuerunt autem dies vitæ Abrahæ, centum septuaginta quinque anni.7 The number of years Abraham lived was a hundred and seventy-five.
Et deficiens mortuus est in senectute bona, provectæque ætatis et plenus dierum : congregatusque est ad populum suum.8 When Abraham had breathed his last, dying at a happy ripe age, old and ful of years, he wasgathered to his people.
Et sepelierunt eum Isaac et Ismaël filii sui in spelunca duplici, quæ sita est in agro Ephron filii Seor Hethæi, e regione Mambre,9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah facing Mamre, in the field of Ephronthe Hittite son of Zohar.
quem emerat a filiis Heth : ibi sepultus est ipse, et Sara uxor ejus.10 This was the field that Abraham had bought from the Hittites, and Abraham and his wife Sarah wereburied there.
Et post obitum illius benedixit Deus Isaac filio ejus, qui habitabat juxta puteum nomine Viventis et videntis.
After Abraham's death, God blessed his son Isaac. Isaac settled near the wel of Lahai Roi.
Hæ sunt generationes Ismaël filii Abrahæ, quem peperit ei Agar Ægyptia, famula Saræ : et12 These are the descendants of Ishmael son of Abraham by Hagar, Sarah's Egyptian slave-girl.
hæc nomina filiorum ejus in vocabulis et generationibus suis. Primogenitus Ismaëlis Nabaioth, deinde Cedar, et Adbeel, et Mabsam,13 These are the names of the sons of Ishmael by name and line: Ishmael's first-born was Nebaioth;then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
Masma quoque, et Duma, et Massa,14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa,
Hadar, et Thema, et Jethur, et Naphis, et Cedma.15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah.
Isti sunt filii Ismaëlis : et hæc nomina per castella et oppida eorum, duodecim principes tribuum suarum.16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, according to their settlements andencampments, twelve chiefs of as many tribes.
Et facti sunt anni vitæ Ismaëlis centum triginta septem, deficiensque mortuus est, et appositus ad populum suum.17 The number of years Ishmael lived was one hundred and thirty-seven. When he breathed his lastand died, he was gathered to his people.
Habitavit autem ab Hevila usque Sur, quæ respicit Ægyptum introëuntibus Assyrios ; coram cunctis fratribus suis obiit.
He lived in the territory stretching from Havilah-by-Shur just outside Egypt on the way to Assyria, andhe held his own against all his kinsmen.
Hæ quoque sunt generationes Isaac filii Abraham : Abraham genuit Isaac :19 This is the story of Isaac son of Abraham. Abraham fathered Isaac.
qui cum quadraginta esset annorum, duxit uxorem Rebeccam filiam Bathuelis Syri de Mesopotamia, sororem Laban.20 Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah the daughter of Bethuel the Aramaean ofPaddan-Aram, and sister of Laban the Aramaean.
Deprecatusque est Isaac Dominum pro uxore sua, eo quod esset sterilis : qui exaudivit eum, et dedit conceptum Rebeccæ.21 Isaac prayed to Yahweh on behalf of his wife, for she was barren. Yahweh heard his prayer, and hiswife Rebekah conceived.
Sed collidebantur in utero ejus parvuli ; quæ ait : Si sic mihi futurum erat, quid necesse fuit concipere ? perrexitque ut consuleret Dominum.22 But the children inside her struggled so much that she said, 'If this is the way of it, why go on living?'So she went to consult Yahweh,
Qui respondens ait : Duæ gentes sunt in utero tuo,
et duo populi ex ventre tuo dividentur,
populusque populum superabit,
et major serviet minori.
and Yahweh said to her: There are two nations in your womb, your issue wil be two rival peoples. One nation wil have the mastery of the other, and the elder wil serve the younger.
Jam tempus pariendi advenerat, et ecce gemini in utero ejus reperti sunt.24 When the time came for her confinement, there were indeed twins in her womb.
Qui prior egressus est, rufus erat, et totus in morem pellis hispidus : vocatumque est nomen ejus Esau. Protinus alter egrediens, plantam fratris tenebat manu : et idcirco appellavit eum Jacob.25 The first to be born was red, altogether like a hairy cloak; so they named him Esau.
Sexagenarius erat Isaac quando nati sunt ei parvuli.26 Then his brother was born, with his hand grasping Esau's heel; so they named him Jacob. Isaac wassixty years old at the time of their birth.
Quibus adultis, factus est Esau vir gnarus venandi, et homo agricola : Jacob autem vir simplex habitabat in tabernaculis.27 When the boys grew up Esau became a skil ed hunter, a man of the open country. Jacob on theother hand was a quiet man, staying at home among the tents.
Isaac amabat Esau, eo quod de venationibus illius vesceretur : et Rebecca diligebat Jacob.28 Isaac preferred Esau, for he had a taste for wild game; but Rebekah preferred Jacob.
Coxit autem Jacob pulmentum : ad quem cum venisset Esau de agro lassus,29 Once, when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau returned from the countryside exhausted.
ait : Da mihi de coctione hac rufa, quia oppido lassus sum. Quam ob causam vocatum est nomen ejus Edom.30 Esau said to Jacob, 'Give me a mouthful of that red stuff there; I am exhausted' -- hence the namegiven to him, Edom.
Cui dixit Jacob : Vende mihi primogenita tua.31 Jacob said, 'First, give me your birthright in exchange.'
Ille respondit : En morior, quid mihi proderunt primogenita ?32 Esau said, 'Here I am, at death's door; what use is a birthright to me?'
Ait Jacob : Jura ergo mihi. Juravit ei Esau et vendidit primogenita.33 Then Jacob said, 'First give me your oath'; he gave him his oath and sold his birthright to Jacob.
Et sic, accepto pane et lentis edulio, comedit et bibit, et abiit, parvipendens quod primogenita vendidisset.34 Then Jacob gave him some bread and lentil stew; he ate, drank, got up and went away. That was allEsau cared about his birthright.
