BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 - Chi ama il suo figliuolo, gli è sempre addosso con la sferza, perchè possa rallegrarsi della sua riuscita, e quegli non abbia a picchiare alle porte de' vicini.	1 He who loves his son chastises him often, that he may be his joy when he grows up.
2 Chi castiga il suo figliuolo, avrà a lodarsi di lui, e tra i conoscenti se ne glorierà.	2 He who disciplines his son will benefit from him, and boast of him among his intimates.
3 Chi istruisce suo figlio, fa geloso il nemico, e davanti agli amici se ne glorierà.	3 He who educates his son makes his enemy jealous, and shows his delight in him among his friends.
4 Muore il padre di lui e quasi non muore; perchè dopo di sè lascia uno che gli rassomiglia.	4 At the father's death, he will seem not dead, since he leaves after him one like himself,
5 Durante la sua vita lo vede e n'ha consolazione, e in morte non si rattrista, nè ha da arrossire in faccia a' nemici.	5 Whom he looks upon through life with joy, and even in death, without regret:
6 Lascia invero un vendicatore della sua casa contro i nemici, e uno che mostrerà riconoscenza agli amici.	6 The avenger he leaves against his foes, and the one to repay his friends with kindness.
7 Chi vezzeggia suo figlio, fascerà le sue piaghe, e a ogni grido [di lui] si turberan le sue viscere.	7 He who spoils his son will have wounds to bandage, and will quake inwardly at every outcry.
8 Un cavallo non domato diventa intrattabile, e un figliuolo abbandonato a sè, diventa un rompicollo.	8 A colt untamed turns out stubborn; a son left to himself grows up unruly.
9 Accarezza il figliuolo e ti farà paventare, scherza con lui e ti rattristerà.	9 Pamper your child and he will be a terror for you, indulge him and he will bring you grief.
10 Non ridere con lui, perchè tu non abbia a piangere insieme, e, da ultimo, a digrignare i denti.	10 Share not in his frivolity lest you share in his sorrow, when finally your teeth are clenched in remorse.
11 Non gli lasciar libertà nella gioventù, e non chiuder un occhio sui suoi capricci.	11 Give him not his own way in his youth, and close not your eyes to his follies.
12 Piega la sua cervice nella gioventù, e rompigli le costole mentr'è fanciullo; perchè non divenga caparbio e ti si ribelli, e tu n'abbia strazio di cuore.	12 Bend him to the yoke when he is young, thrash his sides while he is still small, Lest he become stubborn, disobey you, and leave you disconsolate.
13 Educa tuo figlio e affaticati intorno a lui, per non incappare nella sua turpitudine.	13 Discipline your son, make heavy his yoke, lest his folly humiliate you.
14 Meglio un povero sano e vigoroso di forze, che un ricco cagionevole e flagellato dal male.	14 Better a poor man strong and robust, than a rich man with wasted frame.
15 La salute dell'anima, nella santità della giustizia, vai più d'ogni oro e argento, e il corpo robusto più d'una ricchezza immensa.	15 More precious than gold is health and well-being, contentment of spirit than coral.
16 Non c'è ricchezza che superi quella della salute del corpo, e non c'è piacere superiore alla gioia del cuore.	16 No treasure greater than a healthy body; no happiness, than a joyful heart!
17 Meglio la morte che una vita amara, e il riposo eterno che una malattia ostinata.	17 Preferable is death to a bitter life, unending sleep to constant illness.
18 Le buone cose profuse a una bocca chiusa, son come le offerte di vivande poste sur una tomba.	18 Dainties set before one who cannot eat are like the offerings placed before a tomb.
19 Che giova l'oblazione a un idolo? esso invero non mangerà e non sentirà l'odore!	19 What good is an offering to an idol that can neither taste nor smell?
20 Cosi colui ch'è perseguitato dal Signore, e porta la pena della sua iniquità.	20 So it is with the afflicted man who groans at the good things his eyes behold!
21 Vede con gli occhi e geme, come l'eunuco che abbraccia una vergine e sospirai	21 Do not give in to sadness, torment not yourself with brooding;
22 Non abbandonar l'anima tua alla tristezza, e non t'angustiare co' tuoi pensieri.	22 Gladness of heart is the very life of man, cheerfulness prolongs his days.
23 L'allegria del cuore è la vita dell'uomo, e un tesoro inesausto di santità, e l'esultanza dell'uomo è longevità.	23 Distract yourself, renew your courage, drive resentment far away from you; For worry has brought death to many, nor is there aught to be gained from resentment.
24 Abbi pietà dell'anima tua, rendendoti accetto a Dio, e sii continente: raccogli il tuo cuore nella santità di lui, e caccia lungi da te la tristezza.	24 Envy and anger shorten one's life, worry brings on premature old age.
25 Molti invero ha ucciso la tristezza, e non c'è utilità in essa.	25 One who is cheerful and gay while at table benefits from his food.
26 invidia e l'ira abbreviano i giorni, e vecchiaia anzi tempo arrecan le cure.
27 Un cuor liberale e contento bada alla tavola: i suoi pasti infatti son preparati con cura.
