1 Man born of woman is short-lived and full of trouble,	1 L'uomo nato di donna, ha corta la vita, e di molte miserie è ricolmo.
2 Like a flower that springs up and fades, swift as a shadow that does not abide.	2 Egli spunta, ed è reciso qual fiore, e fugge com'ombra, nè mai si resta in un medesimo stato.
3 Upon such a one will you cast your eyes so as to bring him into judgment before you,	3 E tu stimi degno di te l'aprir sopra cosa tale i tuoi occhi, e il chiamarlo al tuo giudizio?
4 Can a man be found who is clean of defilement? There is none,	4 Chi puro render potrà colui, che di immonda semenza è concepito. Chi fuori di te, che solo sei?
5 however short his days. You know the number of his months; you have fixed the limit which he cannot pass.	5 Brevi sono i giorni dell'uomo; tu hai contato il numero de' mesi suoi, gli li hai fissati de' termini, i quali egli trapassar non potrà.
6 Look away from him and let him be, while, like a hireling, he completes his day.	6 Ritirati per alcun poco da lui, affinchè egli prenda riposo, onde per lui venga, come per un mercenario, il giorno bramato.
7 For a tree there is hope, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again and that its tender shoots will not cease.	7 Un albero ritien la speranza: egli è troncato ripullula di bel nuovo, e getta i suoi ramoscelli.
8 Even though its root grow old in the earth, and its stump die in the dust,	8 Se invecchiata sarà nella terra la sua radice, e il suo tronco sarà morto nella polvere.
9 Yet at the first whiff of water it may flourish again and put forth branches like a young plant.	9 Appena sentirà l'acqua germoglierà, e farà sua chioma come quando fu dapprima piantato.
10 But when a man dies, all vigor leaves him; when man expires, where then is he?	10 Ma l'uomo morto che sia e spogliato, e consunto, che mai diventa.
11 As when the waters of a lake fail, or a stream grows dry and parches,	11 Come se dal mare se ne andasser le acque, e inaridisse il fiume rimasto in secco.
12 So men lie down and rise not again. Till the heavens are no more, they shall not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep.	12 Cosi l'uomo quando si sarà ad dormentato non risorgerà; fino a tanto che il cielo sia consumato ei non si sveglierà, né si riscoterà dal suo sonno.
13 Oh, that you would hide me in the nether world and keep me sheltered till your wrath is past; would fix a time for me, and then remember me!	13 Chi mi darà, che tu nell'inferno mi cuopra, e ascoso mi serbi, fino a tanto che passi il tuo furore, e che tu mi prescriva un tempo, in cui ti ricordi di me?
14 When a man has died, were he to live again, all the days of my drudgery I would wait, until my relief should come.	14 Forse tornerà a vivere un uom già morto? In tutti i giorni di mia milizia sto aspettando, che venga il mio cangiamento.
15 You would call, and I would answer you; you would esteem the work of your hands.	15 Mi chiamerai, ed io ti risponderò: porgerai la destra all'opera delle tue mani.
16 Surely then you would count my steps, and not keep watch for sin in me.	16 Tu però hai contati i miei passi; ma perdona i miei peccati.
17 My misdeeds would be sealed up in a pouch, and you would cover over my guilt.	17 Tu hai sigillati come in un sacchetto i miei delitti, ma hai curata la mia iniquità.
18 But as a mountain falls at last and its rock is moved from its place,	18 Un monte cade, e si scioglie, e un masso cambia di sito:
19 As waters wear away the stones and floods wash away the soil of the land, so you destroy the hope of man.	19 Le pietre sono consunte dalle acque, e la terra battuta dall'inondazione a poco a poco si va consumando; cosi adunque tu anderai consumando l'uomo.
20 You prevail once for all against him and he passes on; with changed appearance you send him away.	20 Tu gli desti vigore per alcun poco, perché passasse per sempre: cangerai la sua faccia, e lo scaccerai.
21 If his sons are honored, he is not aware of it; if they are in disgrace, he does not know about them.	21 Se i suoi figliuoli saranno in atto, o in basso stato, ei nol saprà;
22 Only his own flesh pains him, and his soul grieves for him.	22 Ma la carne di lui sarà in dolore, fin che egli avrà vita, e l'anima di lui lo compiangerà.
