Deuteronomio 25

BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Se nasce lite tra due uomini, e si fa ricorso ai giudici, questi daranno laude di giustizia al giusto, e l'empio condanneranno di empietà.	1 'If people fal out, they must go to court for judgement; the judges must declare the one who is right tobe in the right, the one who is wrong to be in the wrong.
2 E se vedranno, che colui, che ha peccato, sia degno di essere battuto, lo faran distendere per terra, e lo faran battere in loro presenza. La quantità delle battiture sarà secondo la misura del peccato.	2 If the one who is in the wrong deserves a flogging, the judge must have him laid on the ground andflogged in his presence, the number of strokes proportionate to his offence.
3 Con questo però, che non oltrepassino il numero di quaranta: affinché non abbia a ritirarsi il tuo fratello lacerato sconciamente sotto i tuoi occhi.	3 He may impose forty strokes but no more; otherwise, by the infliction of more, serious injury may becaused and your brother be humiliated before you.
4 Non metterai la musoliera al bue, che tribbia le tue biade nell’aia.	4 'You must not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the corn.
5 Quando due fratelli staranno insieme, e uno di essi sarà morto senza figliuoli, la moglie del defunto non si mariterà a un estraneo: ma la prenderà l’altro fratello, il quale darà discendenza al fratello morto:	5 'If brothers live together and one of them dies childless, the dead man's wife may not marry a strangeroutside the family. Her husband's brother must come to her and, exercising his duty as brother, make her hiswife,
6 E al primo figliuolo che avrà da lei, darà il nome di quello, affinché il nome di lui non si estingua in Israele.	6 and the first son she bears must assume the dead brother's name; by this means his name wil not beobliterated from Israel.
7 Ma se quegli non vorrà sposar la moglie del fratello, che debb'essere sua in vigor della legge, andrà la donna alla porta della città, e interpellerà i seniori, e dirà: Non vuole il fratello del mio marito far rivivere il nome del suo fratello in Israele, né prendermi in moglie.	7 But if the man declines to take his brother's wife, she must go to the elders at the gate and say, "Ihave no brother-in-law willing to perpetuate his brother's name in Israel; he declines to exercise his duty asbrother in my favour."
8 E tosto lo faranno citare, e lo interrogheranno. Se risponderà: Non voglio sposarla:	8 The elders of the town must summon the man and talk to him. If, on appearing before them, he says,"I refuse to take her,"
9 Si appresserà a lui la donna alla presenza de' seniori, e gli leverà dal piede la scarpa, e gli sputerà in faccia e dirà: Così sia fatto a colui che non vuole mantener la casa di suo fratello.	9 then the woman to whom he owes duty as brother must go up to him in the presence of the elders,take the sandal off his foot, spit in his face, and pronounce the fol owing words, "This is what is done to the manwho refuses to restore his brother's house,"
10 E la casa di lui sarà chiamata in Israele la Casa dello scalzato.	10 and his family must henceforth be known in Israel as House of the Unshod.
11 Se due uomini verranno a contesa tra di loro, e l’uno principierà ad attaccare l’altro, e volendo la moglie di questo salvare il marito dalle mani di quello, che è più forte, stenderà la mano per prenderlo in parte, che non si nomina;	11 'If, when two men are fighting, the wife of one intervenes to protect her husband from the other'sblows by reaching out and seizing the other by his private parts,
12 Tu le farai tagliar la mano, e non avrai niente di compassione per lei.	12 you must cut off her hand and show no pity.
13 Non porterai nella sacchetta stadere diverse, una più forte, l’altra meno:	13 'You must not keep two different weights in your bag, one heavy, one light.
14 Non avrai in casa tua il moggio più grande, e il più piccolo:	14 You must not keep two different measures in your house, one large, one smal .
15 Terrai stadera giusta, e vera, e moggio giusto e vero: affinché tu viva lungo tempo sopra la terra, che sarà a te data dal Signore Dio tuo:	15 You must keep one weight, ful and accurate, so that you may have long life in the country given youby Yahweh your God.
16 Perocché il Signore Dio tuo ha in abbominazione chi pecca in questo, e odia ogni ingiustizia.	16 For anyone who does things of this kind and acts dishonestly is detestable to Yahweh your God.
17 Ricordati di quello che fece a te Amalec, quando tu eri in viaggio uscendo dall'Egitto:	17 'Remember how Amalek treated you when you were on your way out of Egypt.
18 Com'egli si mosse inverso di te, e mise a fil di spada gli ultimi del tuo esercito, che si erano per la stanchezza arrestati, quando tu eri rifinito dalle fatiche, e dalla fame, ed egli non ebbe timore di Dio.	18 He met you on your way and, after you had gone by, he fel on you from the rear and cut off thestragglers; when you were faint and weary, he had no fear of God.
19 Quando adunque il Signore Dio tuo ti avrà dato requie, e avrà rendute soggette tutte all’intorno le genti del paese ch'ei ti ha promesso, tu farai sì, ch'egli più non si nomini sotto del cielo. Bada di non dimenticartene.	19 When Yahweh your God has granted you peace from al the enemies surrounding you, in the countrygiven you by Yahweh your God to own as your heritage, you must blot out the memory of Amalek under heaven.Do not forget.'
