1 Ma il già detto Simone, che aveva in danno della patria dato l'indizio di quel tesoro, parlava male di Onia, come se egli avesse istigato Eliodoro a far tali cose, e fosse egli stato la cagione del male:	1 This Simon now, of whom we spake afore, having been a betrayer of the money, and of his country, slandered Onias, as if he ha terrified Heliodorus, and been the worker of these evils.
2 E al protettore della città, al difensore della nazione, allo zelator della legge divina ardiva di apporre, che macchinasse contro del regno.	2 Thus was he bold to call him a traitor, that had deserved well of the city, and tendered his own nation, and was so zealous of the laws.
3 Ma avanzandosi i dissapori fino a tal segno, che da alcuni degli amici di Simone si facevano delle uccisioni,	3 But when their hatred went so far, that by one of Simon's faction murders were committed,
4 Considerando Onia i pericoli della discordia, e come Apollonio governatore della Celesiria, e della Fenicia colla sua imprudenza attizzava la malvagità di Simone, si portò dal re:	4 Onias seeing the danger of this contention, and that Apollonius, as being the governor of Celosyria and Phenice, did rage, and increase Simon's malice,
5 Non come accusatore de' suoi con cittadini, ma riflettendo dentro di se a quello, che alla comune utilità di tutto il popolo si conveniva.	5 He went to the king, not to be an accuser of his countrymen, but seeking the good of all, both publick and private:
6 Perocché egli vedeva, che sènza la previdenza del re non era possibile di rimettere le cose in calma, nè che Simone ponesse fine alle sue avventaggini.	6 For he saw that it was impossible that the state should continue quiet, and Simon leave his folly, unless the king did look thereunto.
7 Ma morto Seleuco, essendo a lui succeduto Antioco soprannominato Epifane, Giasone fratello di Onia ambiva il ponteficato:	7 But after the death of Seleucus, when Antiochus, called Epiphanes, took the kingdom, Jason the brother of Onias laboured underhand to be high priest,
8 E ito a trovare il re gli promise trecento sessanta talenti, e altri ottanta talenti per altri titoli,	8 Promising unto the king by intercession three hundred and threescore talents of silver, and of another revenue eighty talents:
9 E oltre a ciò altri cento cinquanta ne prometteva per la permissione di fondare un ginnasio, e un efebio, e per dare a quei di Gerusalemme la cittadinanza di Antiochia.	9 Beside this, he promised to assign an hundred and fifty more, if he might have licence to set him up a place for exercise, and for the training up of youth in the fashions of the heathen, and to write them of Jerusalem by the name of Antiochians.
10 La qual cosa essendo a lui conceduta dal re, e avendo egli conseguito il principato, cominciò subito a far prendere a' suoi nazionali i costumi gentileschi:	10 Which when the king had granted, and he had gotten into his hand the rule he forthwith brought his own nation to Greekish fashion.
11 E tolta via la maniera di vivere approvata dalla umanità dei re in favor de' Giudei, mediante gli ufficj di Giovanni padre di Eupolemo (il quale fu poi mandato pubblico Ambasciadore a Roma a rinnovare la confederazione, e l'amicizia) egli distruggendo i diritti de' cittadini stabiliva leggi perverse.	11 And the royal privileges granted of special favour to the Jews by the means of John the father of Eupolemus, who went ambassador to Rome for amity and aid, he took away; and putting down the governments which were according to the law, he brought up new customs against the law:
12 Imperocché ebbe ardimento di fondare sotto la stessa cittadella un ginnasio, e di mettere ne' lupanari il fior della gioventù.	12 For he built gladly a place of exercise under the tower itself, and brought the chief young men under his subjection, and made them wear a hat.
13 Ed era questo non un principio, ma un avanzamento, e progresso della maniera di vivere gentilesca, e straniera introdotta con infame, e inaudita malvagità dal non sacerdote, ma empio Giasone:	13 Now such was the height of Greek fashions, and increase of heathenish manners, through the exceeding profaneness of Jason, that ungodly wretch, and no high priest;
14 Onde avvenne, che i sacerdoti non erano più intenti al ministero dell'altare, ma disprezzato il tempio, e messi in non cale i sagrifizj, correvano alla palestra, e ai premj indegni, e ad esercitarsi al disco.	14 That the priests had no courage to serve any more at the altar, but despising the temple, and neglecting the sacrifices, hastened to be partakers of the unlawful allowance in the place of exercise, after the game of Discus called them forth;
15 E non facendo verun conto di quel, che era in pregio tra i padri loro, migliori stimavano le glorie della Grecia:	15 Not setting by the honours of their fathers, but liking the glory of the Grecians best of all.
16 Delle quali l'acquisto si disputavan tra loro non senza pericolo, e le usanze di quelli emulavano, e a quelli volevano in tutto esser simili, i quali erano stati loro nemici, e distruttori.	16 By reason whereof sore calamity came upon them: for they had them to be their enemies and avengers, whose custom they followed so earnestly, and unto whom they desired to be like in all things.
17 Imperocché non rimane senza gastigo l'operare empiamente contro le leggi divine: ma ciò verrà in chiaro ne' tempi che sieguono.	17 For it is not a light thing to do wickedly against the laws of God: but the time following shall declare these things.
18 Ma celebrandosi a Tiro i giuochi quinquennali, ed essendovi presente il re,	18 Now when the game that was used every faith year was kept at Tyrus, the king being present,
19 Mandò il facinoroso Giasone da Gerusalemme uomini perversi a portare trecento di dramme d'argento pel sagrifizio d'Ercole; ma quelli, che le portavano chiesero, che non si spendessero pè sagrifizj, perché ciò non era conveniente, ma si impiegassero in altri usi.	19 This ungracious Jason sent special messengers from Jerusalem, who were Antiochians, to carry three hundred drachms of silver to the sacrifice of Hercules, which even the bearers thereof thought fit not to bestow upon the sacrifice, because it was not convenient, but to be reserved for other charges.
20 Onde veramente dal donatore furono offerte pel sagrifizio di Ercole; ma in grazia dei latori furono impiegate nella fabbrica delle triremi.	20 This money then, in regard of the sender, was appointed to Hercules' sacrifice; but because of the bearers thereof, it was employed to the making of gallies.
21 Ma Antioco avendo spedito in Egitto Apollonio figliuolo di Mnesteo a trattare co' grandi della corte del re Tolomeo Filometore, vergendo come era stato escluso dagli affari di quel regno, pensando a' proprj vantaggi, si parti di là, e andò a Joppe, e indi a Gerusalemme.	21 Now when Apollonius the son of Menestheus was sent into Egypt for the coronation of king Ptolemeus Philometor, Antiochus, understanding him not to be well affected to his affairs, provided for his own safety: whereupon he came to Joppa, and from thence to Jerusalem:
22 E accolto grandiosamente da Giasone, e dalla città, vi entrò a lumi accesi, in mezzo ai canti; e indi tornò coll'esercito nella Fenicia.	22 Where he was honourably received of Jason, and of the city, and was brought in with torch alight, and with great shoutings: and so afterward went with his host unto Phenice.
23 Tre anni dopo Giasone mandò Menelao fratello del mentovato Simone a portar denari al re, e riportarne gli ordini sopra altari di importanza.	23 Three years afterward Jason sent Menelans, the aforesaid Simon's brother, to bear the money unto the king, and to put him in mind of certain necessary matters.
24 Ma quegli acquistatosi il favore del re coll'esaltare la sua potenza tirò a se il sommo Sacerdozio, dando trecento talenti d'argento più di Giasone.	24 But he being brought to the presence of the king, when he had magnified him for the glorious appearance of his power, got the priesthood to himself, offering more than Jason by three hundred talents of silver.
25 E ricevuti gli ordini del re se ne tornò. Or ei nulla aveva che fosse degno del sacerdozio, ma portava un cuor di tiranno crudele, e la rabbia di una fiera selvaggia.	25 So he came with the king's mandate, bringing nothing worthy the high priesthood, but having the fury of a cruel tyrant, and the rage of a savage beast.
26 E Giasone, che avea tradito il proprio fratello, ingannato egli stesso fu cacciato esule nel paese degli Ammoniti.	26 Then Jason, who had undermined his own brother, being undermined by another, was compelled to flee into the country of the Ammonites.
27 Or Menelao ottenuto il principato non veniva a capo di trovare i denari promessi al re, benché facesse l'esazione Sostrato, che era governatore della cittadella.	27 So Menelans got the principality: but as for the money that he had promised unto the king, he took no good order for it, albeit Sostratis the ruler of the castle required it:
28 (Perocché a lui spettava l'esigere i tributi): e furono perciò ambedue chiamati a comparire dinanzi al re.	28 For unto him appertained the gathering of the customs. Wherefore they were both called before the king.
29 E Menelao fu deposto dal ponteficato, nel quale ebbe per successore Lisimaco suo fratello; e Sostrato fu mandato al governo di Cipro.	29 Now Menelans left his brother Lysimachus in his stead in the priesthood; and Sostratus left Crates, who was governor of the Cyprians.
30 Or mentre succedevano queste cose accadde, che quei di Tharso, e quelli di Mallo si mossero a sedizione, perché erano stati soggettati ad Antiochide concubina del re.	30 While those things were in doing, they of Tarsus and Mallos made insurrection, because they were given to the king's concubine, called Antiochus.
31 Onde il re si mosse in fretta per sedarli, lasciando a far le sue veci Andronico, uno de' suoi amici.	31 Then came the king in all haste to appease matters, leaving Andronicus, a man in authority, for his deputy.
32 Allora Menelao persuaso, che quello fosse il tempo per lui, rubati alcuni vasi di oro dal tempio, ne fece dono ad Andronico, avendone venduti degli altri in Tiro, e nelle vicine città.	32 Now Menelans, supposing that he had gotten a convenient time, stole certain vessels of gold out of the temple, and gave some of them to Andronicus, and some he sold into Tyrus and the cities round about.
33 Della qual cosa avendo avuta Onia sicura notizia, ne fece rimproveri a lui, tenendosi egli però in Antiochia, in luogo sicuro presso Daphne.	33 Which when Onias knew of a surety, he reproved him, and withdrew himself into a sanctuary at Daphne, that lieth by Antiochia.
34 Per la qual cosa Menelao andò a trovar Andronico, pregandolo di far uccidere Onia. E quegli fece visita ad Onia, e presolo per mano, e giuratagli fede lo indusse (benché ei non se ne fidasse interamente) a uscir dell'asilo, e subito senza alcun riguardo per la giustizia, lo uccise.	34 Wherefore Menelans, taking Andronicus apart, prayed, him to get Onias into his hands; who being persuaded thereunto, and coming to Onias in deceit, gave him his right hand with oaths; and though he were suspected by him, yet persuaded he him to come forth of the sanctuary: whom forthwith he shut up without regard of justice.
35 Per la qual cosa non solo i Giudei, ma anche le altre nazioni furono scandalizzate, e commosse per la ingiusta morte di sì grand' uomo.	35 For the which cause not only the Jews, but many also of other nations, took great indignation, and were much grieved for the unjust murder of the man.
36 Quindi tornato che fu il re dalla Cilicia, i Giudei, e gli stessi Greci si presentarono a lui per querelarsi della iniqua uccisione di Onia:	36 And when the king was come again from the places about Cilicia, the Jews that were in the city, and certain of the Greeks that abhorred the fact also, complained because Onias was slain without cause.
37 E il re afflitto nell'animo compassionando il caso di Onia non trattenne le lagrime, ricordandosi della sobrietà, e della modestia del defunto:	37 Therefore Antiochus was heartily sorry, and moved to pity, and wept, because of the sober and modest behaviour of him that was dead.
38 E acceso di sdegno ordinò che Andronico spogliato della porpora fosse menato attorno per tutta la città, e che al sacrilego fosse tolta la vita nello stesso luogo dove avea commessa l'empietà contro Onia. Cosi il Signore rendè a lui il meritato gastigo.	38 And being kindled with anger, forthwith he took away Andronicus his purple, and rent off his clothes, and leading him through the whole city unto that very place, where he had committed impiety against Onias, there slew he the cursed murderer. Thus the Lord rewarded him his punishment, as he had deserved.
39 Ma avendo Lisimaco fatti molti sacrilegj nel tempio a istigazione di Menelao, e divulgatasi la fama del molto oro, che egli ne avea cavato, si radunò il popolo contro Lisimaco.	39 Now when many sacrileges had been committed in the city by Lysimachus with the consent of Menelans, and the fruit thereof was spread abroad, the multitude gathered themselves together against Lysimachus, many vessels of gold being already carried away.
40 E principiando la turba a fare tumulto, essendo gli animi pieni di ira, Lisimaco armati tre mila uomini sotto la condotta di un certo tiranno avanzato egualmente nell'età, e nella stoltezza, cominciò a fare delle violenze.	40 Whereupon the common people rising, and being filled with rage, Lysimachus armed about three thousand men, and began first to offer violence; one Auranus being the leader, a man far gone in years, and no less in folly.
41 Ma quelli conosciuti i disegni di Lisimaco si armarono chi di sassi, e chi di buoni bastoni; e alcuni gettavan sopra di lui della cenere.	41 They then seeing the attempt of Lysimachus, some of them caught stones, some clubs, others taking handfuls of dust, that was next at hand, cast them all together upon Lysimachus, and those that set upon them.
42 E molti furon feriti, e alcuni ancora uccisi, e tutto il resto messi in fuga; e lo stesso sacrilego rimase ucciso presso all'erario.	42 Thus many of them they wounded, and some they struck to the ground, and all of them they forced to flee: but as for the churchrobber himself, him they killed beside the treasury.
43 Or di tutte queste cose si cominciò ad accusar Menelao.	43 Of these matters therefore there was an accusation laid against Menelans.
44 Ed essendo giunto il re a Tiro andarono a parlare con lui di questi affari tre uomini deputati da' seniori.	44 Now when the king came to Tyrus, three men that were sent from the senate pleaded the cause before him:
45 E Menelao ridotto a mal partito promise una grossa somma di denaro a Tolomeo, perché svolgesse il re in suo favore.	45 But Menelans, being now convicted, promised Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes to give him much money, if he would pacify the king toward him.
46 E Tolomeo andò a trovare il re, che se ne stava in un porticato a prendere il fresco; e lo fece cambiar di parere:	46 Whereupon Ptolemee taking the king aside into a certain gallery, as it were to take the air, brought him to be of another mind:
47 Onde Menelao reo di tutto il male fa da lui pienamente assoluto; ma quei infelici, i quali in un tribunale eziandio di Sciti sarebbono stati dichiarati innocenti, li condannò alla morte.	47 Insomuch that he discharged Menelans from the accusations, who notwithstanding was cause of all the mischief: and those poor men, who, if they had told their cause, yea, before the Scythians, should have been judged innocent, them he condemned to death.
48 Furon pertanto in fretta puniti ingiustamente quelli, i quali sostenevan la causa del popolo, e della città, e la venerazione dei vasi sacri.	48 Thus they that followed the matter for the city, and for the people, and for the holy vessels, did soon suffer unjust punishment.
49 Della qual cosa stomacati quelli di Tiro spesero largamente in onorare la loro sepoltura.	49 Wherefore even they of Tyrus, moved with hatred of that wicked deed, caused them to be honourably buried.
50 Ma Menelao stante l'avarizia dei potenti, conservò l'autorità crescendo in malizia a danno dei cittadini.	50 And so through the covetousness of them that were of power Menelans remained still in authority, increasing in malice, and being a great traitor to the citizens.
