1 Frattanto Demetrio, udita la morte di Nicanore, e la sconfitta del suo esercito, risolvi di mnndar di nuovo nella Giudea Bacchide e Alcimo, e con essi la destra ala del suo esercito.	1 When Demetrius heard that Nicanor and his army had fallen in battle, he again sent Bacchides and Alcimus into the land of Judah, along with the right wing of his army.
2 E preser la strada, che mena a Galgala, posero il campo a Masaloth, che é in Arbelle, e la presero, e uccisero molta gente.	2 They took the road to Galilee, and camping opposite the ascent at Arbela, they captured it and killed many people.
3 Il primo mese dell'anno cento cinquantadue si avvicinarona coll'esercito a Gerusalemme:	3 In the first month of the year one hundred and fifty-two, they encamped against Jerusalem.
4 E si mossero, e andarono a Berea con venti mila fanti e due mila cavalli.	4 Then they set out for Berea with twenty thousand men and two thousand cavalry.
5 E Giuda era alloggiato a Laisa con tremila uomini scelti:	5 Judas, with three thousand picked men, had camped at Elasa.
6 E i suoi osservando la moltitudine di quell'esercito, si sbigottirono grandemente, e molti abbandonarono gli alloggiamenti, e non vi rimasero se non ottocento soldati.	6 When his men saw the great number of the troops, they were very much afraid, and many slipped away from the camp, until only eight hundred men remained.
7 E Giuda veggendo diminuito cotanto l'esercito, e il nemico, che lo stringeva dappresso, si sentì serrare il cuore e venir meno, perche' non avea campo di andare a riunirli.	7 As Judas saw that his army was melting away just when the battle was imminent, he was panic-stricken, because he had no time to gather them together.
8 Ma disse a quei che restavano: Su via, andiamo incontro ai nostri nemici, e tentiamo la battaglia.	8 But in spite of his discouragement, he said to those who remained: "Let us go forward to meet our enemies; perhaps we can put up a good fight against them."
9 Ma quelli nel distoglievano, dicendo: Noi non abbiam forze da farlo: ma per adesso mettiamoci in salvo, e torniamo a trovare i nostri fratelli, e allora verremo a combattere con costoro, perocché ora noi siamo pochi.	9 They tried to dissuade him, saying: "We certainly cannot. Let us save our lives now, and come back with our kinsmen, and then fight against them. Now we are too few."
10 Giuda però disse: Lungi da noi il fuggire da loro, e se è venuta la nostra ora muoiasi valorosamente pei nostri fratelli, e non si imprima questa macchia alla nostra gloria.	10 But Judas said: "Far be it from me to do such a thing as to flee from them! If our time has come, let us die bravely for our kinsmen and not leave a stain upon our glory!"
11 E l'esercito nemico mosse il campo, e venne loro incontro, la cavalleria divisa in due parti, i frombolatori e gli arcieri alla testa dell'esercito, e nelle prime file tutta gente di maggior valore.	11 Then the army of Bacchides moved out of camp and took its position for combat. The cavalry were divided into two squadrons, and the slingers and the archers came on ahead of the army, and all the valiant men were in the front line.
12 E Bacchide era nel corno destro, e le schiere si avvicinavano da due lati, e le trombe sonavano:	12 Bacchides was on the right wing. Flanked by the two squadrons, the phalanx attacked as they blew their trumpets. Those who were on Judas' side also blew their trumpets.
13 E i soldati di Giuda alzarono anche essi le grida, e la terra si mosse al rumor degli eserciti, e la zuffa durò dal mattino fino alla sera.	13 The earth shook with the noise of the armies, and the battle raged from morning until evening.
14 Ma Giuda osservò, che il meglio dell'esercito di Bacchide era all'ala destra; ed egli prese seco i più valorosi:	14 Seeing that Bacchides was on the right, with the main force of his army, Judas, with all the most stouthearted rallying to him,
15 Co' quali sconfisse quella destra ala, e inseguì il nemico fino al monte di Azoto.	15 drove back the right wing and pursued them as far as the mountain slopes.
16 Ma quelli dell'ala sinistra veggendo rotta l'ala destra si mossero a seguir Giuda e i suoi alle spalle.	16 But when the men on the left wing saw that the right wing was driven back, they turned and followed Judas and his men, taking them in the rear.
17 E rincrudì la battaglia, e molti furono feriti e uccisi dall'una e dall'altra parte.	17 The battle was fought desperately, and many on both sides fell wounded.
18 E Giuda fu ucciso, e gli altri fuggirono.	18 Then Judas fell, and the rest fled.
19 E Gionata e Simone presero il corpo di Giuda loro fratello, e gli diedero sepoltura nel sepolcro dei padri suoi nella città di Modin.	19 Jonathan and Simon took their brother Judas and buried him in the tomb of their fathers at Modein.
20 E tutto il popolo d'Israele fece gran duolo, e lo piansero per molto tempo,	20 All Israel bewailed him in great grief. They mourned for him many days, and they said,
21 E dicevano: Come mai è perito l'eroe, che era la salute del popolo d'Israele?	21 "How the mighty one has fallen, the savior of Israel!"
22 Ma altre guerre di Giuda e altre azioni grandi del suo valore non le abbiamo descritte, perché troppo grande ne è il numero.	22 The other acts of Judas, his battles, the brave deeds he performed, and his greatness have not been recorded; but they were very many.
23 Ma dopo la morte di Giuda scapparon fuora gli iniqui in tutto il paese d'Israele, e alzaron il capo tutti quelli, pe' quali era un mestiere il mal fare.	23 After the death of Judas, the transgressors of the law raised their heads in every part of Israel, and all kinds of evildoers appeared.
24 In quel tempo fu grandissima fame, e tutto il paese e gli abitanti si soggettarono a Bacchide.	24 In those days there was a very great famine, and the country deserted to them.
25 E Bacchide fece scelta degli uomini empii, e li pose al governo del paese:	25 Bacchides chose impious men and made them masters of the country.
26 Eglino andavan in cerca con tutta diligenza degli amici di Giuda, e li presentavano a Bacchide ed ei si vendicava sopra di loro, e gli straziava.	26 These sought out and hunted down the friends of Judas and brought them to Bacchides, who punished and derided them.
27 E grande fu la tribolazione d'Israele, e tale, che la simile non vi fa dal tempo, che non si vide profeta in Israele.	27 There had not been such great distress in Israel since the time prophets ceased to appear among the people.
28 E si adunarono tutti gli amici di Giuda, e dissero a Gionata:	28 Then all the friends of Judas came together and said to Jonathan:
29 Dopo la morte di Giuda tuo fratello non si trova uomo simile a lui, che prenda la pugna contro Bacchide e contro i nemici di nostra gente.	29 "Since your brother Judas died, there has been no one like him to oppose our enemies, Bacchides and those who are hostile to our nation.
30 Ora noi ti abbiam oggi eletto per principe in luogo di lui, e condottiere nelle nostre guerre.	30 Now therefore we have chosen you today to be our ruler and leader in his place, and to fight our battle."
31 E Gionata accettò allora il principato succedendo in luogo di Giuda suo fratello.	31 From that moment Jonathan accepted the leadership, and took the place of Judas his brother.
32 E venne ciò a notizia di Bacchide e cercò di ucciderlo.	32 When Bacchides learned of it, he sought to kill him.
33 Ma se n' accorse Gionata e Simone suo fratello e tutti quelli che eran con lui, e se ne fuggirono nel deserto di Thecua, e si fermarono presso al lago di Asphar.	33 But Jonathan and his brother Simon and all the men with him discovered this, and they fled to the desert of Tekoa and camped by the waters of the pool of Asphar.
34 E Bacchide ne fu informato, ed egli col suo esercito in giorno di sabato andò di la dal Giordano.	34
35 E Gionata mandò suo fratello capo del popolo a pregare i Nabathei suoi amici, che imprestasser loro i lor preparativi di guerra, che erano grandi.	35 Jonathan sent his brother as leader of the convoy to ask permission of his friends, the Nabateans, to deposit with them their great quantity of baggage.
36 Ma i figliuoli di Jambri usciti da Madaba presero Giovanni e tutto quel che avea seco, e con questo se n'andarono.	36 But the sons of Jambri from Medaba made a raid and seized and carried off John and everything he had.
37 Dopo tali cose fu riferito a Gionata e a Simone suo fratello, che i figliuoli di Jambri celebravano con solennità un matrimonio, e conducevano con gran pompa da Madaba la sposa, la quale era figliuola di uno de' principi grandi di Chanaan.	37 After this, word was brought to Jonathan and his brother Simon: "The sons of Jambri are celebrating a great wedding, and with a large escort they are bringing the bride, the daughter of one of the great princes of Canaan, from Nadabath."
38 E si ricordarono della uccisione di Giovanni loro fratello, e si mossero, e si messero a coperto dietro un monte.	38 Remembering the blood of John their brother, they went up and hid themselves under cover of the mountain.
39 Quando, alzati gli occhi, videro a un tratto un gran tumulto e un grandioso apparato; e lo sposo andava incontro a quelli coi suoi amici e fratelli al suono di timpani e altri strumenti musicali, con molta gente armata.	39 They watched, and suddenly saw a noisy crowd with baggage; the bridegroom and his friends and kinsmen had come out to meet the bride's party with tambourines and musicians and much equipment.
40 E usciron dall'imboscata, e dieder loro addosso, e molti furon feriti e uccisi, e il resto fuggirono alla montagna: e quelli presero le loro spoglie:	40 The Jews rose up against them from their ambush and killed them. Many fell wounded, and after the survivors fled toward the mountain, all their spoils were taken.
41 E le nozze si cambiarono in duolo, e i loro concerti di musica in lamentazioni.	41 Thus the wedding was turned into mourning, and the sound of music into lamentation.
42 Ed eglino rendicarono il sangue del loro fratello, e se ne tornarono verso le rive del Giordano.	42 Having taken their revenge for the blood of their brother, the Jews returned to the marshes of the Jordan.
43 E avendo ciò risaputo Bacchide, andò con grosso esercito in giorno di sabato fino alla riva del Giordano.	43 When Bacchides heard of it, he came on the sabbath to the banks of the Jordan with a large force.
44 E Gionata disse ai suoi: Su via combattiamo contro i nostri nemici; perocche' noi non siamo nel caso di ieri e dei giorni precedenti.	44 Then Jonathan said to his companions, "Let us get up now and fight for our lives, for today is not like yesterday and the day before.
45 Perocchè in faccia è il nemico, da destra e da sinistra le acque del Giordano e le sue rive e paduli e boscaglie, e non abbiam dove voltarci.	45 The battle is before us, and behind us are the waters of the Jordan on one side, marsh and thickets on the other, and there is no way of escape.
46 Or voi alzate le voci al cielo, affinche siate liberati dai vostri nemici. E s'attaccò lo zuffa.	46 Cry out now to Heaven for deliverance from our enemies."
47 E Gionata tentò di uccider Bacchide; ma questi lo schivo tirondosi indietro:	47 When they joined battle, Jonathan raised his arm to strike Bacchides, but Bacchides backed away from him.
48 E Gionata e i suoi si gettarono nel Giordano, e lo passarono a nuoto sotto gli occhi de' nemici.	48 Jonathan and his men jumped into the Jordan and swam across to the other side, but the enemy did not pursue them across the Jordan.
49 E de' soldati di Bacchide perirono in quel giorno mille uomini, e se ne tornarono a Gerusalemme;	49 A thousand men on Bacchides' side fell that day.
50 E fecero delle piazze forti nella Giudea,la fortezza di Jerico e di Ammaum e di Bethoron e di Bethet e di Thamnata e di Phara e di Thopo con alle mura e con parte e sbarre.	50 On returning to Jerusalem, Bacchides built strongholds in Judea: the Jericho fortress, as well as Emmaus, Beth-horon, Bethel, Timnath, Pharathon, and Tephon, with high walls and gates and bars.
51 E Bacchide vi pose presidj, affinché molestassero Israele:	51 In each he put a garrison to oppose Israel.
52 E fortificò Bethsura e Gazara e la città della, e vi pose presidio e provvisioni da bocca.	52 He fortified the city of Beth-zur, Gazara and the citadel, and put soldiers in them and stores of provisions.
53 E prese in ostaggio i figliuoli de' principali del paese, e li chiuse nella cittadella di Gerusalemme.	53 He took as hostages the sons of the leaders of the country and put them in custody in the citadel at Jerusalem.
54 Or nell'anno cento cinquantatré il secondo mese Alcimo comando che fosse atterrato il muro della casa santa interiore, e che si distruggessero le opere de' profeti; e cominciò a farle atterrare.	54 In the year one hundred and fifty-three, in the second month, Alcimus ordered the wall of the inner court of the sanctuary to be torn down, thus destroying the work of the prophets. But he only began to tear it down.
55 Allora Alcimo fu percosso (da Dio), e i suoi disegni rimaser sospesi, ed egli perdè la favella e perde l'uso delle membra per paralisia, e non poté più dir parola, nè dar sesto alle cose di sua casa.	55 Just at that time he had a stroke, and his work was interrupted; his mouth was closed and he was paralyzed, so that he could no longer utter a word to give orders concerning his house.
56 E morì in quel tempo Alcimo in mezzo a grandi dolori.	56 Finally he died in great agony.
57 E Bacchide vedendo, come Alcimo era morto,se ne tornò al re: e il paese fu in calma per due anni.	57 Seeing that Alcimus was dead, Bacchides returned to the king, and the land of Judah was quiet for two years. Bacchides and Jonathan
58 Ma tutti i cattivi uomini formaron questo disegno, e dissero: Gionata e i suoi se ne stanno tranquilli senza verun timore: ora è tempo di far venire Bacchide, il quale ti premierà tutti in una notte.	58 Then all the transgressors of the law held a council and said: "Jonathan and his companions are living in peace and security. Now then, let us have Bacchides return, and he will capture all of them in a single night."
59 E andarono a dare a lui questo consiglio.	59 So they went and took counsel with him.
60 Ed ei si mosse per venire con grosso esercito, e scrisse segretamente ai suoi amici, che erano nella Giudea, che mettesser le mani addosso a Gionata e alla sua gente: ma non poteron farlo, perché questi ebber vento dei loro disegni.	60 When Bacchides was setting out with a large force, he sent letters secretly to all his allies in Judea, telling them to seize Jonathan and his companions. They were not able to do this, however, because their plot became known.
61 E Gionata fece prigioni cinquanta uomini del paese, che erano i primi autori di questa trama, e li fece morire:	61 In fact, Jonathan's men seized about fifty of the men of the country who were ringleaders in the mischief and put them to death.
62 E Gionata e Simone colla loro gente si ritirarono a Bethbessen, la quale è nel deserto, e ne ristorarono le rovine, e la fortificarono.	62 Then Jonathan and Simon and their companions withdrew to Bethbasi in the desert; they rebuilt and strengthened its fortifications that had been demolished.
63 E venne ciò alle orecchie di Bacchide, il quale messe insieme tutte le sue schiere, e mandò avviso a quelli che erano nella Giudea.	63 When Bacchides learned of this, he gathered together his whole force and sent word to those who were in Judea.
64 E andò a porre il campo sopra Bethbessen, e l'assedio per molti giorni, e alzò le sue macchine.	64 He came and pitched his camp before Bethbasi, and constructing siege-machines, he fought against it for many days.
65 Ma Gionata lasciò nella città Simone suo fratello, e andò pel paese, e tornò con assai gente,	65 Leaving his brother Simon in the city, Jonathan, accompanied by a small group of men, went out into the field.
66 E assali Odaren e i suoi fratelli e i figliuoli di Phaseron nelle loro tende, e principiava a fare strage, e a far mostra grande del suo valore:	66 He struck down Odomera and his kinsmen and the sons of Phasiron in their encampment; these men had set out to go up to the siege with their forces.
67 Quando Simone e la sua gente uscirono dalla città, e dieder fuoco alle macchine,	67 Simon and his men then sallied forth from the city and set fire to the machines.
68 E assalirono Bacchide, e lo sconfissero, e lo rendettero molto afflitto per essere andati in fumo i suoi disegni e i suoi tentativi.	68 They fought against Bacchides, and he was beaten. This caused him great distress. Because the enterprise he had planned came to nought,
69 E sdegnato con que' malvagi uomini, i quali lo avean consigliato a venir nel loro paese, ne fece morire molti: ed egli risolvè di tornarsene col rimanente de' suoi al suo paese.	69 he was angry with the lawless men who had advised him to invade the province. He killed many of them and resolved to return to his own country.
70 Lo che avendo saputo Gionata, gli spedì ambasciadori per far pace con lui, e rendergli i prigionieri.	70 Jonathan learned of this and sent ambassadors to make peace with him and to obtain the release of the prisoners.
71 Ed ei volentieri gli ammesse, e fece quello che volle Gionata, e giurò, che per tutto il tempo di sua vita non farebbe a lui verun male.	71 He agreed to do as Jonathan had asked. He swore an oath to him that he would never try to injure him for the rest of his life;
72 E restitui a lui i prigionieri, che avea fatti per l'avanti nel paese di Giuda: e si parti, e se n' andò al suo paese, e non ritornò mai più nella Giudea.	72 and he released the prisoners he had previously taken from the land of Judah. He returned to his own country and never came into their territory again.
73 E fini in Israele la guerra. E Gionata risedeva a Machmas, e ivi diede principio ad amministrar giustizia al popolo, e sterminò da Israele gli empi.	73 Then the sword ceased in Israel. Jonathan settled in Michmash; he began to judge the people and he destroyed the impious in Israel.
