DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Il figliuol savio ascolta l’ammaestramento di suo padre; Ma lo schernitore non ascolta riprensione	1 A wise child listens to a father's discipline, a cynic wil not listen to reproof.
2 L’uomo mangerà del bene del frutto delle sue labbra; Ma l’anima degli scellerati mangerà del frutto di violenza	2 The fruit of the mouth provides a good meal, but the soul of the treacherous feeds on violence.
3 Chi guarda la sua bocca preserva l’anima sua; Ma ruina avverrà a chi apre disordinatamente le sue labbra	3 A guard on the mouth makes life secure, whoever talks too much is lost.
4 L’anima del pigro appetisce, e non ha nulla; Ma l’anima de’ diligenti sarà ingrassata	4 The idler hungers but has no food; hard workers get their fill.
5 Il giusto odia la parola bugiarda; Ma l’empio si rende puzzolente ed infame	5 The upright hates a lying word, but the wicked slanders and defames.
6 La giustizia guarda colui che è intiero di via; Ma l’empietà sovverte il peccatore	6 Uprightness stands guard over one whose way is honest, sin causes the ruin of the wicked.
7 Vi è tale che si fa ricco, e non ha nulla; Tale altresì che si fa povero, ed ha di gran facoltà	7 There are some who, on nothing, pretend to be rich, some, with great wealth, pretend to be poor.
8 Le ricchezze dell’uomo sono il riscatto della sua vita; Ma il povero non ode alcuna minaccia	8 The ransom for life is a person's wealth; but the poor wil not hear the reproof.
9 La luce de’ giusti sarà lieta; Ma la lampana degli empi sarà spenta	9 The light of the upright is joyful, the lamp of the wicked goes out.
10 Per orgoglio non si produce altro che contese; Ma la sapienza è con quelli che si consigliano	10 Insolence breeds only disputes, wisdom lies with those who take advice.
11 Le ricchezze procedenti da vanità scemeranno; Ma chi raduna con la mano le accrescerà	11 A sudden fortune wil dwindle away, accumulation little by little is the way to riches.
12 La speranza prolungata fa languire il cuore; Ma il desiderio adempiuto è un albero di vita	12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, desire fulfil ed is a tree of life.
13 Chi sprezza la parola andrà in perdizione; Ma chi riverisce il comandamento riceverà retribuzione	13 Contempt for the word is self-destructive, respect for the commandment wins salvation.
14 L’insegnamento di un savio è una fonte di vita, Per ritrarsi da’ lacci della morte	14 The teaching of the wise is a life-giving fountain for eluding the snares of death.
15 Buon senno reca grazia; Ma il procedere de’ perfidi è duro	15 Good sense wins favour, but the way of the treacherous is hard.
16 L’uomo avveduto fa ogni cosa con conoscimento; Ma il pazzo spande follia	16 Anyone of discretion acts by the light of knowledge, the fool parades his fol y.
17 Il messo malvagio caderà in male; Ma l’ambasciator fedele reca sanità	17 A bad messenger fal s into misfortune, a trusty messenger brings healing.
18 Povertà ed ignominia avverranno a chi schifa la correzione; Ma chi osserva la riprensione sarà onorato	18 Whoever rejects discipline wins poverty and scorn; for anyone who accepts correction: honour.
19 Il desiderio adempiuto è cosa soave all’anima; Ed agli stolti è cosa abbominevole lo stornarsi dal male	19 Desire fulfil ed is sweet to the soul; fools are loth to turn -- from evil.
20 Chi va co’ savi diventerà savio; Ma il compagno degli stolti diventerà malvagio	20 Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, whoever mixes with fools wil be ruined.
21 Il male perseguita i peccatori; Ma Iddio renderà il bene a’ giusti	21 Evil wil pursue the sinner, but good wil reward the upright.
22 L’uomo da bene lascerà la sua eredità a’ figliuoli de’ figliuoli; Ma le facoltà del peccatore son riserbate al giusto	22 The good bequeaths a heritage to children's children, the wealth of the sinner is stored away for theupright.
23 Il campo lavorato de’ poveri produce abbondanza di cibo; Ma vi è tale che è consumato per mancamento di buon governo	23 Though the farms of the poor yield much food, some perish for lack of justice.
24 Chi risparmia la sua verga odia il suo figliuolo; Ma chi l’ama gli procura correzione per tempo	24 Whoever fails to use the stick hates his child; whoever is free with correction loves him.
25 Il giusto mangerà a sazietà dell’anima sua; Ma il ventre degli empi avrà mancamento	25 The upright eats to the full, the bel y of the wicked goes empty.
