1 Voici encore des proverbes de Salomon, qui ont été transcrits par les gens d’Ézékias, roi de Juda.	1 These are also parables of Solomon, which the men of Ezechias king of Juda copied out.
2 La gloire de Dieu, c’est de cacher les choses, et la gloire des rois, de les clarifier.	2 It is the glory of God to conceal the word, and the glory of kings to search out the speech.
3 Vois la hauteur du ciel et la profondeur de la terre: la pensée des rois est tout aussi insondable.	3 The heaven above, and the earth beneath, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.
4 Retire les scories de l’argent, l’orfèvre en fera sortir un vase;	4 Take away the rust from silver, and there shall come forth a most pure vessel:
5 retire le méchant de la présence du roi, et son trône s’affermira par la justice.	5 Take away wickedness from the face of the king, and his throne shall be established with justice.
6 Ne fais pas l’important devant le roi, ne te mets pas au milieu des grands;	6 Appear not glorious before the king, and stand not in the place of great men.
7 mieux vaut qu’on te dise: “Monte ici!” que de te voir rabaissé en présence du prince.	7 For it is better that it should be said to thee: Come up hither; than that thou shouldst be humbled before the prince.
8 Si tu as vu quelque chose, n’accuse pas trop vite; que feras-tu ensuite si ton adversaire te contredit?	8 The things which thy eyes have seen, utter not hastily in a quarrel: lest afterward thou mayst not be able to make amends, when thou hast dishonoured thy friend.
9 Défends ta cause contre ton adversaire, mais sans révéler les secrets d’autrui,	9 Treat thy cause with thy friend, and discover not the secret to a stranger:
10 quiconque l’apprendrait t’en ferait le reproche, et tu y perdrais ta réputation.	10 Lest he insult over thee, when he hath heard it, and cease not to upbraid thee. Grace and friendship deliver a man: keep these for thyself, lest thou fall under reproach.
11 Des pommes d’or enchâssées dans l’argent, c’est la parole qu’on a dite à propos;	11 To speak a word in due time, is like apples of gold on beds of silver.
12 l’anneau d’or d’un collier de vermeil, c’est la sage réprimande faite à qui peut l’entendre.	12 As an earring of gold and a bright pearl, so is he that reproveth the wise, and the obedient ear.
13 Une fraîcheur de neige par un jour d’été, tel est le messager fidèle pour celui qui l’envoie: quel réconfort pour son maître!	13 As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to him that sent him, for he refresheth his soul.
14 Vent et nuages sans pluie, tel est le vantard avec ses promesses illusoires.	14 As clouds, and wind, when no rain followeth, so is the man that boasteth, and doth not fulfil his promises.
15 Avec de la persévérance on peut convaincre un juge; la langue, si douce, peut briser un os.	15 By patience a prince shall be appeased, and a soft tongue shall break hardness.
16 As-tu trouvé du miel? Manges-en avec modération. N’exagère pas, tu le vomirais.	16 Thou hast found honey, eat what is sufficient for thee, lest being glutted therewith thou vomit it up.
17 Ne va pas trop chez ton prochain: il pourrait s’en fatiguer et te prendre en grippe.	17 Withdraw thy foot from the house of thy neighbour, lest having his fill he hate thee.
18 Un gourdin, une épée, une flèche acérée: tel est l’homme qui parle faussement de son prochain.	18 A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour, is like a dart and a sword and a sharp arrow.
19 Une dent cariée, un pied foulé: tel est l’appui d’un hypocrite, le jour où tout va mal.	19 To trust to an unfaithful man in the time of trouble, is like a rotten tooth, and weary foot,
20 Prendras-tu leur manteau en un jour d’hiver, verseras-tu du vinaigre sur leur plaie? Ne chante pas un air gai devant ceux qui souffrent.	20 And one that looseth his garment in cold weather. As vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to a very evil heart. As a moth doth by a garment, and a worm by the wood: so the sadness of a man consumeth the heart.
21 Si ton ennemi a faim, donne-lui à manger; s’il a soif, donne-lui à boire!	21 If thy enemy be hungry, give him to eat: if he thirst, give him water to drink:
22 C’est la façon d’amasser des braises sur sa tête, et Yahvé t’en récompensera.	22 For thou shalt heap hot coals upon his head, and the Lord will reward thee.
23 Le vent du nord enfante la pluie, et les sous-entendus hypocrites des visages en colère.	23 The north wind driveth away rain, as doth a sad countenance a backbiting tongue.
24 Mieux vaut rester dans un coin de grenier que de partager sa maison avec une femme querelleuse.	24 It is better to sit m a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman, and in a common house.
25 De l’eau fraîche pour une gorge assoiffée: telle est une bonne nouvelle qui arrive de loin.	25 As cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good tidings from a far country.
26 Une fontaine souillée, une source corrompue: tel est l’homme honnête qui cède à la pression du méchant.	26 A just man falling down before the wicked, is as a fountain troubled with the foot, and a corrupted spring.
27 Manger trop de miel ne réussit pas: attention aux honneurs!	27 As it is not good for a man to eat much honey, so he that is a searcher of majesty, shall be overwhelmed by glory.
28 Une ville ouverte, sans remparts, tel est l’homme qui ne contrôle pas ses esprits.	28 As a city that lieth open and is not compassed with walls, so is a man that cannot refrain his own spirit in speaking.
