Job prit la parole et dit:1 Then Job answered, and said:
Comme tu sais bien soutenir le faible, secourir le bras sans vigueur!2 Whose helper art thou? is it of him that is weak? and dost thou hold up the arm of him that has no strength?
Quels bons conseils tu donnes à l'ignorant, comme ton savoir est fertile en ressources!3 To whom hast thou given counsel? perhaps to him that hath no wisdom, and thou hast shewn thy very great prudence.
Mais ces discours, à qui s'adressent-ils, et d'où provient l'esprit qui sort de toi?4 Whom hast thou desired to teach? was it not him that made life?
Les Ombres tremblent sous terre, les eaux et leurs habitants sont dans l'effroi.5 Behold the giants groan under the waters, and they that dwell with them.
Devant lui, le Shéol est à nu, la Perdition à découvert.6 Hell is naked before him, and there is no covering for destruction.
C'est lui qui a étendu le Septentrion sur le vide, suspendu la terre sans appui.7 He stretched out the north over the empty space, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.
Il enferme les eaux dans ses nuages. Sans que la nuée crève sous leur poids.8 He bindeth up the waters in his clouds, so that they break not out and fall down together.
Il couvre la face de la pleine lune et déploie sur elle sa nuée.9 He withholdeth the face of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud over it.
Il a tracé un cercle à la surface des eaux, aux confins de la lumière et des ténèbres.10 He hath set bounds about the waters, till light and darkness come to an end.
Les colonnes des cieux sont ébranlées, frappées de stupeur quand il menace.11 The pillars of heaven tremble, and dread at his beck.
Par sa force, il a brassé la Mer, par son habileté, écrasé Rahab.12 By his power the seas are suddenly gathered together, and his wisdom has struck the proud one.
Son souffle a clarifié les Cieux, sa main transpercé le Serpent Fuyard.13 His spirit hath adorned the heavens, and his obstetric hand brought forth the winding serpent.
Tout cela, c'est l'extérieur de ses oeuvres, et nous n'en saisissons qu'un faible écho. Mais le tonnerrede sa puissance, qui le comprendra?14 Lo, these things are said in part of his ways: and seeing we have heard scarce a little drop of his word, who shall be able to behold the thunder of his greatness?
