BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 L'uomo nato della femina, vivente breve tempo, è ripieno di molte miserie.	1 a human being, born of woman, whose life is short but ful of trouble.
2 Il quale come fiore viene, e conculcato è; fugge sì come ombra, e non rimane mai in uno medesimo stato.	2 Like a flower, such a one blossoms and withers, fleeting as a shadow, transient.
3 E pensi esser cosa degna di aprire sopra cotal cosa gli occhii tuoi, e menarlo teco nel giudicio?	3 And this is the creature on whom you fix your gaze, and bring to judgement before you!
4 Chi puote fare la cosa monda, concetta del non mondo seme? Or non sei tu quello solo?	4 But will anyone produce the pure from what is impure? No one can!
5 Brevi sono li di dell' uomo; lo numero delli mesi suoi è appresso te; e ordinasti li termini suoi, li quali non si poteranno trapassare.	5 Since his days are measured out, since his tale of months depends on you, since you assign himbounds he cannot pass,
6 Pàrtiti uno poco da lui, acciò ch' elli istia in riposo, insino che venghi il dì desiderato, e sì come del mercenaio siano li dì suoi.	6 turn your eyes from him, leave him alone, like a hired labourer, to finish his day in peace.
7 Lo legno ha speranza; se tagliato e' sarà, da capo si fa verde, e li rami suoi mettono li rampolli.	7 There is always hope for a tree: when fel ed, it can start its life again; its shoots continue to sprout.
8 Se invecchierà nella terra la sua radice, e nella polvere morto sarà lo suo broccone,	8 Its roots may have grown old in the earth, its stump rotting in the ground,
9 all' odore dell' acque germinerae, e farae la moltitudine de' rami, quasi come di prima piantato era.	9 but let it scent the water, and it buds, and puts out branches like a plant newly set.
10 Ma l' uomo, quando è morto, e sarae spogliato e consumato, domandatene, vi priego: dove lui è?	10 But a human being? He dies, and dead he remains, breathes his last, and then where is he?
11 E come se si partissono l'acque del mare, e lo fiume fatto vôto si secca,	11 The waters of the sea wil vanish, the rivers stop flowing and run dry:
12 così l'uomo, quando morrà, non risusciterà; insino che il cielo sia attrito, non si sveglierae, nè non si leverae dal suo sonno.	12 a human being, once laid to rest, will never rise again, the heavens wil wear out before he wakes up,or before he is roused from his sleep.
13 Chi mi darà questo, che in inferno tu mi difendi e nascondimi, infino che trapassi lo tuo furore, e òrdinimi il tempo nel quale tu ti ricordi di me?	13 Will no one hide me in Sheol, and shelter me there til your anger is past, fixing a certain day forcal ing me to mind-
14 E pensi tu, che morto l'uomo, un' altra volta viva? tutti i dì, ne' quali io ora cavalco, aspetto insino a tanto che venga la mia immutazione.	14 can the dead come back to life? - day after day of my service, I should be waiting for my relief tocome.
15 Chiamerae me, e io risponderò a te; allo lavorio delle tue mani porgerai la tua mano diritta.	15 Then you would cal , and I should answer, you would want to see once more what you have made.
16 In veritade li andamenti miei annumerasti, ma perdona alli peccati miei.	16 Whereas now you count every step I take, you would then stop spying on my sin;
17 Segnasti quasi come nel sacculo li peccati miei, ma curasti la mia iniquitade.	17 you would seal up my crime in a bag, and put a cover over my fault.
18 Lo monte cadente scorrerà, e lo sasso sarà trasportato del suo luogo.	18 Alas! Just as, eventual y, the mountain fal s down, the rock moves from its place,
19 Le acque cavano le pietre, e per la innondanza dell' acque a poco a poco la terra è consumata; e adunque li uomini similmente perderai.	19 water wears away the stones, the cloudburst erodes the soil; so you destroy whatever hope a personhas.
20 Fortificastilo uno poco, acciò che in perpetuo trapassasse; e immuterai la faccia sua, e manderai lui.	20 You crush him once for al , and he is gone; first you disfigure him, then you dismiss him.
21 Ovvero se saranno nobili i suoi figliuoli, ovvero non nobili, non intenderà.	21 His children may rise to honours -- he does not know it; they may come down in the world -- he doesnot care.
22 Ma pure la carne sua, insino che viverà, sì dorrà; e l'anima sua sopra sè medesimo piangerà (sempre).	22 He feels no pangs, except for his own body, makes no lament, except for his own self.
