1 E fatto è, poi che percosse Alessandro di Filippo di Macedonia, il quale primo regnò in Grecia, uscito della terra di Cetim, (contro a) Dario re di Persia e di Media,	1 Now it came to pass, after that Alexander the son of Philip the Macedonian, who first reigned in Greece, coming out of the land of Cethim, had overthrown Darius king of the Persians and Medes:
2 ordinò molte battaglie, e tutte le vinse, e uccise gli re della terra.	2 He fought many battles, and took the strong holds of all, and slew the kings of the earth:
3 E passòe infino alle fini della terra, e tolse le spoglie della moltitudine delle genti; e tenne la terra silenzio nel suo conspetto.	3 And he went through even to the ends of the earth, and took the spoils of many nations: and the earth was quiet before him.
4 E radunò potenza, e oste molto forte; e lo suo animo s' innalzòe da prendere e d' aggrandire.	4 And he gathered a power, and a very strong army: and his heart was exalted and lifted up.
5 E acquistòe li paesi delle genti, e soggiogòe li tiranni; e dispuosegli a rendere tributo a lui.	5 And he subdued countries of nations, and princes: and they became tributaries to him.
6 E dopo queste cose infermòe, e conobbe ch' egli dovea morire.	6 And after these things, he fell down upon his bed, and knew that he should die.
7 E convocò a sè (tutte le genti) li uomini e baroni, i quali erano stati nutriti con lui insino nella sua gioventù; e (loro venendo a lui, gli) divise lo suo regno intra loro, (dando a ciascuno quello che gli si convenia).	7 And he called his servants the nobles that were brought up with him from his youth: and he divided his kingdom among them, while he was yet alive.
8 Egli regnò, il detto Alessandro, XII anni (in grande stato), e poi si morì.	8 And Alexander reigned twelve years, and he died.
9 E li suoi baroni tennono il suo reame, ciascuno nel suo luogo.	9 And his servants made themselves kings every one in his place:
10 E tutti, dopo la sua morte, si posono in capo corona d' oro per molti anni, e poi i loro figliuoli dopo loro; e (di costoro) moltiplicaróno (molti) mali in terra.	10 And they all put crowns upon themselves after his death, and their sons after them many years, and evils were multiplied in the earth.
11 E di loro uscìe la radice di peccato, ciò fue il gentile Antioco, figliuolo dello re Antioco, il quale era istato a Roma per ostaggio; e regnòe negli anni CXXXVII del regno de' Greci.	11 And there came out of them a wicked root, Antiochus the Illustrious, the son of king Antiochus, who had been a hostage at Rome: and he reigned in the hundred and thirty-seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks.
12 In quel tempo si partirono alquanti malvagi uomini del popolo d' Israel, e confortarono molti altri (andare a fare male), dicendo: andiamo, e disponiamo il testamento (di Dio) colle genti le quali dimorano intorno a noi; conciosia cosa che, poi che noi ci partimmo da loro, molti mali ci sono avvenuti.	12 In those days there went out of Israel wicked men, and they persuaded many, saying: Let us go, and make a covenant with the heathens that are round about us: for since we departed from them, many evils have befallen us.
13 E parve loro buono questo consiglio.	13 And the word seemed good in their eyes.
14 E così si partirono alquanti del popolo, e andàronsene allo re (Antioco); a' quali egli diede signoria di fare la giustizia delle genti (cioè di vivere secondo il modo de' pagani).	14 And some of the people determined to do this, and went to the king: and he gave them license to do after the ordinances of the heathens.
15 Ed edificarono in Ierusalem giocosa giostra, secondo la legge delle (strane) nazioni.	15 And they built a place of exercise in Jerusalem, according to the laws of the nations:
16 E feciono a loro prepuzii, e partìrsi dal santo testamento, e aggiunsonsi alle nazioni, e straniaronsi acciò che facessono male.	16 And they made themselves prepuces, and departed from the holy covenant, and joined themselves to the heathens, and were sold to do evil.
17 E così fu disposto lo regno alla volontà di Antioco, e incominciò a regnare nella terra d' Egitto, acciò ch' egli regnasse sopra due reami.	17 And the kingdom was established before Antiochus, and he had a mind to reign over the land of Egypt, that he might reign over two kingdoms.
18 Ed entròe in Egitto con grande moltitudine di gente, con carri ed elefanti e cavalieri armati, e con grande moltitudine di navi.	18 And he entered into Egypt with a great multitude, with chariots and elephants, and horsemen, and a great number of ships:
19 E fece battaglia contro a Tolomeo re di Egitto; di che fu sconfitto Tolomeo; e fuggirono, e molti ne furono abbattuti e feriti.	19 And he made war against Ptolemee king of Egypt, but Ptolemee was afraid at his presence, and fled, and many were wounded unto death.
20 Allora prese lo re Antioco le cittadi armate d'Egitto, e rubò (le cittadi e) le ricchezze del paese d'Egitto.	20 And he took the strong cities in the land of Egypt: and he took the spoils of the land of Egypt.
21 Negli anni CXLIII (del regno de' Greci, e) poi ch' egli ebbe conquistato lo reame d' Egitto, egli venne verso il popolo d' Israel.	21 And after Antiochus had ravaged Egypt in the hundred and forty-third year, he returned and went up against Israel.
22 E sì venne in Ierusalem con moltitudine di genti.	22 And he went up to Jerusalem with a great multitude.
23 Ed entrò nella chiesa di Dio con superbia, e rubòe l'altare dell' oro e lo candeliere del lume e tutti gli altri suoi vaselli, e la mensa della proposizione e li vasi da sacrificare, e le guastarde e li mortai dell' oro, il velo e le corone e l' ornamento dell' oro, il quale era nella faccia del tempio; e ogni cosa ispezzòe.	23 And he proudly entered into the sanctuary, and took away the golden altar, and the candlestick of light, and all the vessels thereof, and the table of proposition, and the pouring vessels, and the vials, and the little mortars of gold, and the veil, and the crowns, and the golden ornament that was before the temple: and he broke them all in pieces.
24 Di che tolse l'oro e l'argento e' vaselli dell' oro, e prese li nascosi tesori i quali egli trovòe; e rubate tutte queste cose, egli se n' andòe nella terra sua.	24 And he took the silver and gold, and the precious vessels: and he took the hidden treasures which he found: and when he had taken all away he departed into his own country.
25 E fece grande tagliata d' uomini, parlando con grande superbia.	25 And he made a great slaughter of men, and spoke very proudly.
26 Ecco che si levò gran pianto nel popolo d' Israel, e in ogni loro luogo.	26 And there was great mourning in Israel, and in every place where they were.
27 E piansono li principi e li vecchi; e li giovani e le vergini (e di quegli che) infermarono; e la bellezza delle donne si cambiò.	27 And the princes, and the ancients mourned, and the virgins and the young men were made feeble, and the beauty of the women was changed.
28 E ogni marito si lamentava; e (con ogni lamento) si lamentavano le pulcelle ch' erano da maritarsi.	28 Every bridegroom took up lamentation: and the bride that set in the marriage bed, mourned:
29 Tutta la terra si commosse sopra li suoi abitatori, e tutto il lignaggio di Iacob fu ripieno di confusione.	29 And the land was moved for the inhabitants thereof, and all the house of Jacob was covered with confusion.
30 E (avendo fatto) lo re Antioco (la sua VOlontà di spogliare e di rubare la chiesa di Dio, e l'altre ruberie e uccisioni, sì si partì e ritornossi in suo paese) in capo di due anni passati (egli) mandò alle cittadi de' Giudei il principe de' tributi; e venne in Ierusalem con grande gente.	30 And after two full years the king sent the chief collector of his tributes to the cities of Juda, and he came to Jerusalem with a great multitude.
31 E parlòe cogli Giudei parole di pace con tradimento; e loro credettono a lui.	31 And he spoke to them peaceable words in deceit: and they believed him.
32 Donde egli coila sua gente subitamente corsono sopra la cittade, e feciono grandissimo danno; e distrusse molti del popolo d' Israel.	32 And he fell upon the city suddenly, and struck it with a great slaughter, and destroyed much people in Israel.
33 E prese le ricchezze della cittade, e misevi poi fuoco; e arsela, e distrusse le [sue case], e li loro muri d' intorno.	33 And he took the spoils of the city, and burnt it with fire, and threw down the houses thereof, and the walls thereof round about:
34 E menarono le femine prigione e li loro figliuoli, e possederono il loro bestiame.	34 And they took the women captive, and the children, and the cattle they possessed.
35 E riedificarono la cittade di David con grandi muri e forti, e con molte torri; e feciono in loro rocca e fortezza.	35 And they built the city of David with a great and strong wall, and with strong towers, and made it a fortress for them:
36 E lo sopradetto principe vi mise dentro genti peccatrici, e uomini malvagi; e così le tenevano, e misonvi dentro armi e vittovaglia; e radunarono le ruberie di Ierusalem.	36 And they placed there a sinful nation, wicked men, and they fortified themselves therein: and they stored up armour, and victuals, and gathered together the spoils of Jerusalem;
37 E quivi le puosono; e così furono ivi in grande pericolo li paesani.	37 And laid them up there: and they became a great snare.
38 E tutto questo si fece a disonore della santificazione, con grande impedimento del popolo d' Israel.	38 And this was a place to lie in wait against the sanctuary, and an evil devil in Israel.
39 E sparsono il sangue innocente nel circuito della santificazione, e così contaminarono la santificazione.	39 And they shed innocent blood round about the sanctuary, and defiled the holy place.
40 E per paura di loro sì fuggirono li abitatori di Ierusalem; donde ella fue abitata da gente forestiera, e rimase abbandonata del suo seme, cioè che li suoi figliuoli la lasciarono.	40 And the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled away by reason of them, and the city was made the habitation to strangers, and she became a stranger to her own seed, and her children forsook her.
41 E la sua santificazione fue desolata sì come solitudine; e gli dì suoi festerecci tornarono in pianto, gli suoi sabbati in vituperio, e li suoi onori in nulla.	41 Her sanctuary was desolate like a wilderness, her festival days were turned into mourning, her sabbaths into reproach, her honours were brought to nothing.
42 E secondo la sua gloria moltiplicò il suo disonore; e la sua altezza tornò (in basso e in disonore e) in pianto.	42 Her dishonour was increased according to her glory, and her excellency was turned into mourning.
43 Poi avvenne che lo re Antioco scrisse per tutto il suo reame, che ogni gente fosse solamente un popolo, e ciascuno abbandonasse la sua legge (e ubbidisse alla sua).	43 And king Antiochus wrote to all his kingdom, that all the people should be one: and every one should leave his own law.
44 E tutte le genti consentirono al comandamento del re Antioco.	44 And all nations consented according to the word of king Antiochus.
45 Di che molti di quegli del popolo d' Israel consentirono a lui, e sacrificarono agl' idoli, e corruppono la festa loro del sabbato.	45 And many of Israel consented to his service, and they sacrificed to idols, and profaned the sabbath.
46 E mandò il re Antioco i libri suoi in Ierusalem per le mani de' suoi ambasciatori, e per tutte le cittadi de' Giudei ...	46 And the king sent letters by the hands of messengers to Jerusalem, and to all the cities of Juda: that they should follow the law of the nations of the earth,
47 ...	47 And should forbid holocausts and sacrifices, and atonements to be made in the temple of God.
48 e che per tutte le cittadi de' Giudei vietassono loro di guardare il sabbato e le loro feste solenni.	48 And should prohibit the sabbath, and the festival days, to be celebrated.
49 E [comandò di] corrompere le sante cose, e lo (altare) santo (del) popolo d' Israel;	49 And he commanded the holy places to be profaned, and the holy people of Israel.
50 e che si edificasse altari e templi e idoli, e che si offerissono carni porcine e comunali animali.	50 And he commanded altars to be built, and temples, and idols, and swine's flesh to be immolated, and unclean beasts.
51 E comandò ch' egli lasciassono di circoncidere i loro figliuoli, e che corrompessono l'anime loro; e tutte le brutture e cose abominevoli comandò che facessono, acciò che dimenticassono la legge loro, e abbandonassono li comandamenti di Dio;	51 And that they should leave their children uncircumcised, and let their souls be defiled with all uncleannesses, and abominations, to the end that they should forget the law, and should change all the justifications of God.
52 e che chi non facesse secondo il comandamento del re Antioco, fosse morto.	52 And that whosoever would not do according to the word of king Antiochus should be put to death.
53 E appresso tutte queste cose scrisse per tutto il suo reame; e propose alli principi del popolo, che costrignessono di (far) fare tutte queste cose.	53 According to all these words he wrote to his whole kingdom, and he appointed rulers over the people that should force them to do these things.
54 E comandarono alle (genti delle) cittadi dei Giudei di sacrificare (alli idoli).	54 And they commanded the cities of Juda to sacrifice.
55 E molti (malvagi) del popolo (di Dio) i quali aveano abbandonata la legge divina, (di loro volontà) sì si radunarono costoro; e (con loro insieme) feciono di molti mali sopra la terra.	55 Then many of the people were gathered to them that had forsaken the law of the Lord: and they committed evils in the land:
56 E cacciarono il popolo d' Israel in luoghi nascosi, e celati e fuggitivi.	56 And they drove away the people of Israel into lurking holes, and into the secret places of fugitives.
57 E a' dì XV del mese di dicembre, nel centesimo quadragesimo quinto anno, lo re Antioco fece edificare uno idolo abominevole di desolazione sopra l'altare di Dio; e per tutte le cittadi dintorno dei Giudei edificarono altari.	57 On the fifteenth day of the month Casleu, in the hundred and forty-fifth year, king Antiochus set up the abominable idol of desolation upon the altar of God, and they built altars throughout all the cities of Juda round about:
58 E dinanzi alle porte delle case (loro) e nelle (loro) piazze sì accendevano gl' incensi e sacrificavano (agl' idoli).	58 And they burnt incense, and sacrificed at the doors of the houses, and in the streets.
59 E istracciando li libri della legge di Dio, misongli nel fuoco.	59 And they cut in pieces, and burnt with fire the books of the law of God:
60 E (uccidevano) chiunque avea alcuni de' detti libri, e chiunque osservava la (detta) legge di Dio, secondo il comandamento del re era morto.	60 And every one with whom the books of the testament of the Lord were found, and whosoever observed the law of the Lord, they put to death, according to the edict of the king.
61 E così per la potenza del re e de' suoi facevano al detto popolo d' Israel queste cose ogni mese a tutti quelli ch' erano trovati nelle cittadi.	61 Thus by their power did they deal with the people of Israel, that were found in the cities month after month.
62 E nel XXV di del mese sacrificavano sopra l'altare	62 And on the five and twentieth day of the month they sacrificed upon the altar of the idol that was over against the altar of God.
63 E tutte le femine, che avessono circoncisi i loro figliuoli, erano morte secondo il comandamento del re Antioco.	63 Now the women that circumcised their children, were slain according to the commandment of king Antiochus.
64 E li loro figliuoli impiccavano per le teste per tutte le loro case; e ancora uccidevano coloro che. gli circoncidevano.	64 And they hanged the children about their necks in all their houses: and those that had circumcised them, they put to death.
65 E molti del popolo d' Israel deliberaronc intra loro di non mangiare le cose immonde (e not lecite); e inanzi eleggevano di morire, che contaminare loro degli cibi (vietati e) immondi.	65 And many of the people of Israel determined with themselves, that they would not eat unclean things: and they chose rather to die than to be defiled with unclean meats.
66 E non volevano rompere la santa legge di Dio; e (così per questa cagione) furono morti (amaramente).	66 And they would not break the holy law of God, and they were put to death:
67 E così l' ira (dello re Antioco) abbondava (diversamente) sopra il popolo (d' Israel).	67 And there was very great wrath upon the people.
