| 4 Aveva trenta figli che cavalcavano su trenta asini e governavano altrettante città nella regione del Gàlaad, dette i "villaggi di Iair", nome che conservano ancora. | 4 And he had thirty sons who rode on thirty asses; and they had thirty cities, called Havvoth-jair to this day, which are in the land of Gilead. |

| 6 Gli Israeliti ripresero a compiere ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, prestando culto ai Baal, alle Astarti, agli dèi di Aram, agli dèi di Sidone, agli dèi di Moab, agli dèi degli Ammoniti e agli dèi dei Filistei. Abbandonarono il Signore e non lo adoravano più. | 6 And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines; and they forsook the LORD, and did not serve him. |

| 8 Quell'anno Filistei e Ammoniti iniziarono una spietata oppressione degli Israeliti che durò diciotto anni: ne furono colpiti tutti gli Israeliti che abitavano al di là del Giordano, nella regione amorrita del Gàlaad. | 8 and they crushed and oppressed the children of Israel that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the people of Israel that were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. |
| 9 Gli Ammoniti passarono poi il Giordano per portar guerra anche alle tribù di Giuda, di Beniamino e di Efraim, cosicché l'oppressione di Israele era grande. | 9 And the Ammonites crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah and against Benjamin and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was sorely distressed. |
| 10 Allora gli Israeliti gridarono al Signore: "Abbiamo peccato contro di te, perché abbiamo abbandonato il nostro Dio per prestare il nostro culto ai Baal". | 10 And the people of Israel cried to the LORD, saying, "We have sinned against thee, because we have forsaken our God and have served the Baals." |
| 11 Ma Dio rispose così agli Israeliti: "Quando gli Egiziani, gli Amorrei, gli Ammoniti, i Filistei, | 11 And the LORD said to the people of Israel, "Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians and from the Amorites, from the Ammonites and from the Philistines? |
| 12 i Sidoni, gli Amaleciti, i Cananei vi opprimevano, e voi alzavate il vostro grido a me, io vi ho salvato dalle loro mani. | 12 The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, oppressed you; and you cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand. |
| 13 Ma nonostante questo, voi mi avete abbandonato per servire altri dèi. Per questo non voglio più salvarvi! | 13 Yet you have forsaken me and served other gods; therefore I will deliver you no more. |
| 14 Andatevene piuttosto a implorare l'aiuto degli dèi che vi siete scelti. Penseranno loro a salvarvi nel tempo della vostra oppressione". | 14 Go and cry to the gods whom you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your distress." |
| 15 Ripresero gli Israeliti: "Abbiamo peccato: fa' tu di noi tutto quello che vuoi; ma oggi liberaci, ti imploriamo!". | 15 And the people of Israel said to the LORD, "We have sinned; do to us whatever seems good to thee; only deliver us, we pray thee, this day." |
| 16 Gli Israeliti allora eliminarono di mezzo a loro gli dèi stranieri e tornarono ad adorare il Signore, il cui animo non poté più resistere alle sofferenze d'Israele. | 16 So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD; and he became indignant over the misery of Israel. |
| 17 Radunatisi, gli Ammoniti avevano posto il campo nel Gàlaad. Anche gli Israeliti si radunarono per andare ad accamparsi in Mizpa. | 17 Then the Ammonites were called to arms, and they encamped in Gilead; and the people of Israel came together, and they encamped at Mizpah. |
| 18 Intanto il popolo e i capi galaaditi cercavano chi sarebbe stato l'uomo che avrebbe intrapreso la guerra contro gli Ammoniti: sarebbe stato lui il capo di tutti i Galaaditi. | 18 And the people, the leaders of Gilead, said one to another, "Who is the man that will begin to fight against the Ammonites? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead." |
