1 Allora Pilato prese Gesù e lo fece flagellare.	1 Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him.
2 Poi i soldati intrecciarono una corona di spine, gliela posero sul capo e lo rivestirono di un manto di porpora;	2 And the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and arrayed him in a purple robe;
3 e si avvicinavano a lui e dicevano: "Salve, o re dei Giudei!". E lo prendevano a schiaffi.	3 they came up to him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and struck him with their hands.
4 Intanto Pilato uscì di nuovo fuori e disse loro: "Ecco che ve lo conduco fuori, affinché sappiate che non trovo in lui nessun capo di accusa".	4 Pilate went out again, and said to them, "See, I am bringing him out to you, that you may know that I find no crime in him."
5 Uscì dunque Gesù fuori, portando la corona di spine e il manto di porpora. E disse loro: "Ecco l'uomo!".	5 So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, "Behold the man!"
6 Quando però lo videro, i sacerdoti-capi e le guardie si misero a gridare: "Crocifiggi! Crocifiggi!". Dice loro Pilato: "Prendetelo voi e crocifiggetelo, poiché io non trovo in lui alcun capo di accusa".	6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, "Crucify him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no crime in him."
7 Gli risposero i Giudei: "Noi abbiamo una legge e secondo la legge deve morire, perché si è fatto Figlio di Dio".	7 The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and by that law he ought to die, because he has made himself the Son of God."
8 Quando sentì questo discorso, Pilato fu preso ancor più dalla paura.	8 When Pilate heard these words, he was the more afraid;
9 Rientrò nel pretorio e dice a Gesù: "Di dove sei tu?". Gesù non gli diede risposta.	9 he entered the praetorium again and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave no answer.
10 Gli dice allora Pilato: "Non vuoi parlarmi? Non sai che ho il potere di liberarti e ho il potere di crocifiggerti?".	10 Pilate therefore said to him, "You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and power to crucify you?"
11 Gli rispose Gesù: "Tu non avresti alcun potere su di me se non ti fosse dato dall'alto. Perciò colui che mi ha consegnato a te ha un peccato più grande".	11 Jesus answered him, "You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore he who delivered me to you has the greater sin."
12 Da quel momento Pilato cercava di liberarlo. Ma i Giudei continuavano a gridare: "Se tu liberi costui, non sei amico di Cesare. Chiunque si fa re, si oppone a Cesare".	12 Upon this Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, "If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend; every one who makes himself a king sets himself against Caesar."
13 Sentite queste parole, Pilato condusse fuori Gesù e sedette su una tribuna nel luogo chiamato Pavimento di pietra, in ebraico Gabbatà.	13 When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, and in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
14 Era la preparazione della Pasqua, intorno all'ora sesta. Pilato disse ai Giudei: "Ecco il vostro re!".	14 Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, "Behold your King!"
15 Ma quelli gridarono: "Via, via! Crocifiggilo!". Disse loro Pilato: "Crocifiggerò il vostro re?". Risposero i sacerdoti-capi: "Non abbiamo altro re che Cesare".	15 They cried out, "Away with him, away with him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar."
16 Allora lo consegnò loro perché fosse crocifisso. Presero dunque in consegna Gesù.	16 Then he handed him over to them to be crucified.
17 Egli, portando la croce da sé, uscì verso il luogo detto del Cranio, in ebraico Gòlgota,	17 So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of a skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha.
18 dove lo crocifissero e con lui altri due: uno da una parte e uno dall'altra, e nel mezzo Gesù.	18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.
19 Pilato aveva scritto anche un cartello e l'aveva posto sopra la croce. Vi era scritto: "Gesù il Nazareno, il re dei Giudei".	19 Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross; it read, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews."
20 Molti Giudei lessero questo cartello, perché il luogo dove fu crocifisso Gesù era vicino alla città, ed era scritto in ebraico, in latino, in greco.	20 Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.
21 I sacerdoti-capi dei Giudei dissero allora a Pilato: "Non lasciare scritto: "Il re dei Giudei", ma scrivi: "Costui disse: sono il re dei Giudei".	21 The chief priests of the Jews then said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but, 'This man said, I am King of the Jews.'"
22 Rispose Pilato: "Ciò che ho scritto, ho scritto".	22 Pilate answered, "What I have written I have written."
23 I soldati, quand'ebbero crocifisso Gesù, presero le sue vesti e ne fecero quattro parti, una per ciascun soldato, e anche la tunica. Ma la tunica era senza cucitura, tessuta dalla parte superiore tutta di un pezzo.	23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took his garments and made four parts, one for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was without seam, woven from top to bottom;
24 Dissero dunque fra di loro: "Non dividiamola, ma tiriamo a sorte di chi sarà". E' così che si compì la Scrittura che aveva detto: Si sono spartite fra loro le mie vesti e per il mio vestito hanno tirato la sorte. Queste cose fecero i soldati.	24 so they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be." This was to fulfill the scripture, "They parted my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots."
25 Vicino alla croce di Gesù stavano sua madre e la sorella di sua madre, Maria di Clèofa e Maria Maddalena.	25 So the soldiers did this. But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 Gesù, dunque, vista la madre e presso di lei il discepolo che amava, disse alla madre: "Donna, ecco tuo figlio!".	26 When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!"
27 Quindi disse al discepolo: "Ecco tua madre!". E da quell'ora il discepolo la prese in casa sua.	27 Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.
28 Dopo ciò, sapendo Gesù che già tutto era compiuto, affinché si adempisse la Scrittura, disse: "Ho sete".	28 After this Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the scripture), "I thirst."
29 C'era là un vaso pieno di aceto. Fissata dunque una spugna imbevuta di aceto a un ramo di issopo, glielo accostarono alla bocca.	29 A bowl full of vinegar stood there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop and held it to his mouth.
30 Quando ebbe preso l'aceto, Gesù disse: "Tutto è compiuto"; e, chinato il capo, rese lo spirito.	30 When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished"; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31 I Giudei, siccome era giorno di Preparazione, perché i corpi non rimanessero sulla croce di sabato - quel giorno di sabato era infatti solenne - chiesero a Pilato che spezzassero loro le gambe e venissero rimossi.	31 Since it was the day of Preparation, in order to prevent the bodies from remaining on the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
32 Vennero dunque i soldati e spezzarono le gambe del primo e dell'altro che erano stati crocifissi con lui.	32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him;
33 Venuti da Gesù, siccome lo videro già morto, non gli spezzarono le gambe,	33 but when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
34 ma uno dei soldati con un colpo di lancia gli trafisse il fianco e ne uscì subito sangue ed acqua.	34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.
35 Colui che ha visto ha testimoniato e la sua testimonianza è verace ed egli sa che dice il vero, affinché anche voi crediate.	35 He who saw it has borne witness--his testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth--that you also may believe.
36 Questo avvenne infatti affinché si adempisse la Scrittura: Non gli sarà spezzato alcun osso;	36 For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled, "Not a bone of him shall be broken."
37 e ancora un'altra Scrittura dice: Guarderanno a colui che hanno trafitto.	37 And again another scripture says, "They shall look on him whom they have pierced."
38 Dopo questo, Giuseppe di Arimatea, che era discepolo di Gesù, ma segreto per paura dei Giudei, chiese a Pilato di togliere il corpo di Gesù. Pilato lo concesse. Venne dunque e tolse il suo corpo.	38 After this Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him leave. So he came and took away his body.
39 Venne anche Nicodemo, il quale già prima era andato da lui di notte, portando una mistura di mirra e di aloe di circa cento libbre.	39 Nicodemus also, who had at first come to him by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds' weight.
40 Presero dunque il corpo di Gesù e lo avvolsero con bende assieme agli aromi, secondo l'usanza di seppellire dei Giudei.	40 They took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.
41 Nel luogo in cui fu crocifisso c'era un orto e nell'orto un sepolcro nuovo, in cui non era ancora stato posto nessuno.	41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb where no one had ever been laid.
42 Là, a causa della Preparazione dei Giudei, dato che il sepolcro era vicino, deposero Gesù.	42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, as the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.
