| 1 Poi ordinò di introdurla dove era riposta la sua argenteria e ingiunse altresì di preparare a lei da mangiare dei propri cibi e da bere del suo vino. | 1 Then he commanded them to bring her in where his silver dishes were kept, and ordered them to set a table for her with some of his own food and to serve her with his own wine. |
| 2 Ma Giuditta rispose: "Non mangerò di quei cibi, perché non ne risulti un'occasione di caduta, ma mi saranno serviti i cibi che ho portato con me". | 2 But Judith said, "I cannot eat it, lest it be an offense; but I will be provided from the things I have brought with me." |
| 3 Oloferne le disse: "Quando saranno consumate le cose che hai con te, donde ci riforniremo di vivande simili a quelle per dartele? Infatti in mezzo a noi non c'è nessuno della tua gente". | 3 Holofernes said to her, "If your supply runs out, where can we get more like it for you? For none of your people is here with us." |
| 4 Giuditta gli rispose: "Per la tua vita, o mio signore, la tua serva non consumerà le provviste che ho con me, prima che il Signore non compia per mano mia ciò che ha stabilito". | 4 Judith replied, "As your soul lives, my lord, your servant will not use up the things I have with me before the Lord carries out by my hand what he has determined to do." |
| 5 Gli ufficiali di Oloferne la condussero nella tenda ed essa dormì fino alla mezzanotte; verso la vigilia del mattino si alzò | 5 Then the servants of Holofernes brought her into the tent, and she slept until midnight. Along toward the morning watch she arose |
| 6 e mandò a dire ad Oloferne: "Dia ordine il mio signore che si permetta alla tua serva di uscire per fare orazione". | 6 and sent to Holofernes and said, "Let my lord now command that your servant be permitted to go out and pray." |
| 7 Oloferne comandò alle guardie del corpo di non impedirla. Essa rimase nell'accampamento tre giorni, nottetempo usciva nella valle di Betulia e si lavava nella zona dell'accampamento alla sorgente d'acqua. | 7 So Holofernes commanded his guards not to hinder her. And she remained in the camp for three days, and went out each night to the valley of Bethulia, and bathed at the spring in the camp. |
| 8 Quando risaliva, pregava il Signore, Dio d'Israele, di indirizzare la sua via verso il ristabilimento dei figli del suo popolo. | 8 When she came up from the spring she prayed the Lord God of Israel to direct her way for the raising up of her people. |
| 9 Rientrando purificata, essa rimaneva nella tenda, finché verso sera le si apprestava il cibo. | 9 So she returned clean and stayed in the tent until she ate her food toward evening. |
| 10 Ora il quarto giorno Oloferne offrì un banchetto ai soli suoi servi senza invitare nessuno dei funzionari. | 10 On the fourth day Holofernes held a banquet for his slave only, and did not invite any of his officers. |
| 11 E disse a Bagoa, l'eunuco preposto a tutte le sue cose: "Va' e persuadi la donna ebrea che è presso di te, di venire con noi e di mangiare e bere insieme a noi. | 11 And he said to Bagoas, the eunuch who had charge of his personal affairs, "Go now and persuade the Hebrew woman who is in your care to join us and eat and drink with us. |
| 12 Sarebbe infatti disonorevole per la nostra reputazione se lasciassimo andare una simile donna senza godere della sua compagnia; se non riusciremo ad attirarla, si farà beffe di noi". | 12 For it will be a disgrace if we let such a woman go without enjoying her company, for if we do not embrace her she will laugh at us." |
| 13 Bagoa, partito dalla presenza di Oloferne, entrò da lei e disse: "Non esiti questa bella fanciulla a venire dal mio signore per essere onorata alla sua presenza e bere insieme a noi il vino nell'allegrezza e diventare in questo giorno come una figlia degli Assiri, che si trovano nel palazzo di Nabucodònosor". | 13 So Bagoas went out from the presence of Holofernes, and approached her and said, "This beautiful maidservant will please come to my lord and be honored in his presence, and drink wine and be merry with us, and become today like one of the daughters of the Assyrians who serve in the house of Nebuchadnezzar." |
| 14 Giuditta gli rispose: "Chi sono io per contraddire al mio signore? Tutto quanto sarà gradito ai suoi occhi lo eseguirò senza tardare, e ciò sarà per me un motivo di letizia fino al giorno della mia morte". | 14 And Judith said, "Who am I, to refuse my lord? Surely whatever pleases him I will do at once, and it will be a joy to me until the day of my death!" |
| 15 Poi, alzatasi, si adornò delle sue vesti e di tutti gli ornamenti femminili, mentre la sua ancella si era recata a stendere a terra per lei davanti ad Oloferne le pellicce che aveva ricevuto da Bagoa per suo uso quotidiano, onde prendere cibo distesa su di esse. | 15 So she got up and arrayed herself in all her woman's finery, and her maid went and spread on the ground for her before Holofernes the soft fleeces which she had received from Bagoas for her daily use, so that she might recline on them when she ate. |
| 16 Giuditta entrò e si adagiò; il cuore di Oloferne ne fu estasiato e il suo spirito si turbò, preso com'era da un'intensa passione di unirsi a lei, poiché dal giorno in cui l'aveva vista, cercava il momento favorevole di sedurla. | 16 Then Judith came in and lay down, and Holofernes' heart was ravished with her and he was moved with great desire to possess her; for he had been waiting for an opportunity to deceive her, ever since the day he first saw her. |
| 17 Oloferne pertanto le rivolse la parola: "Bevi dunque e datti con noi alla gioia". | 17 So Holofernes said to her. "Drink now, and be merry with us!" |
| 18 Giuditta rispose: "Sì, berrò, o signore, perché la mia vita è oggi per me più gloriosa che tutti i giorni fin dalla mia nascita". | 18 Judith said, "I will drink now, my lord, because my life means more to me today than in all the days since I was born." |
| 19 E prese a mangiare e bere davanti a lui ciò che la sua ancella aveva preparato. | 19 Then she took and ate and drank before him what her maid had prepared. |
| 20 Oloferne si deliziava per causa di lei e bevette del vino in grande quantità, quanto non ne aveva mai bevuto in un solo giorno da quando era nato. | 20 And Holofernes was greatly pleased with her, and drank a great quantity of wine, much more than he had ever drunk in any one day since he was born. |
