| 4 Così in quel giorno il popolo rientrò alla chetichella in città, come furtivamente rientra il popolo coperto di vergogna dopo essersi dato alla fuga durante la battaglia. | 4 The king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, "O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!" |
| 5 Il re si era velato il volto e gridava ad alta voce: "Figlio mio Assalonne, Assalonne figlio mio, figlio mio!". | 5 Then Joab came into the house to the king, and said, "You have today covered with shame the faces of all your servants, who have this day saved your life, and the lives of your sons and your daughters, and the lives of your wives and your concubines, |

And the people were all told, "Behold, the king is sitting in the gate"; and all the people came before the king. Now Israel had fled every man to his own home. |
| 9 Allora il re si alzò e si pose a sedere alla porta. Fu annunciato a tutto il popolo: "Ecco, il re sta alla porta". E tutto il popolo andò davanti al re. Israele dunque era fuggito, ciascuno alla sua tenda. | 9 And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, "The king delivered us from the hand of our enemies, and saved us from the hand of the Philistines; and now he has fled out of the land from Absalom. |
| 10 Ora tutto il popolo discuteva in tutte le tribù d'Israele e diceva: "Il re ci ha liberato dalla mano dei nostri nemici, ci ha salvato dalla mano dei Filistei; ora egli è dovuto fuggire dal paese, a causa di Assalonne. | 10 But Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why do you say nothing about bringing the king back?" |

| 15 Così piegò il cuore di ogni uomo di Giuda come di un sol uomo. Essi mandarono a dire al re: "Ritorna, tu e tutti i tuoi servi". | 15 So the king came back to the Jordan; and Judah came to Gilgal to meet the king and to bring the king over the Jordan. |

| 28 Egli però ha calunniato il tuo servo presso il re, mio signore. Ma il re, mio signore, è come un angelo di Dio: fa' quello che sembra bene ai tuoi occhi! | 28 For all my father's house were but men doomed to death before my lord the king; but you set your servant among those who eat at your table. What further right have I, then, to cry to the king?" |
| 29 Veramente tutta la casa di mio padre non era che gente degna di morte per il re, mio signore. Eppure tu hai posto il tuo servo tra quelli che mangiano alla tua mensa. Quale diritto ho io ancora da reclamare presso il re?". | 29 And the king said to him, "Why speak any more of your affairs? I have decided: you and Ziba shall divide the land." |
| 30 Il re gli disse: "Perché seguiti a dire parole? Io dico: tu e Zibà vi dividerete i campi". | 30 And Mephibosheth said to the king, "Oh, let him take it all, since my lord the king has come safely home." |
| 31 E Merib-Baal disse al re: "Prenda pure tutto, dal momento che il re, mio signore, è tornato in pace alla sua casa!". | 31 Now Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim; and he went on with the king to the Jordan, to escort him over the Jordan. |
| 32 Anche Barzillài, il galaadita, era sceso da Roghelìm, e attraversò il Giordano con il re per prendere congedo da lui al Giordano. | 32 Barzillai was a very aged man, eighty years old; and he had provided the king with food while he stayed at Mahanaim; for he was a very wealthy man. |

| 35 Ma Barzillài rispose al re: "Quanto mi resta da vivere, perché io salga col re a Gerusalemme? | 35 I am this day eighty years old; can I discern what is pleasant and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats or what he drinks? Can I still listen to the voice of singing men and singing women? Why then should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king? |
| 36 Io adesso ho ottant'anni. Forse posso distinguere il buono dal cattivo? O può gustare il tuo servo quello che mangia e quello che beve? O posso ascoltare la voce dei cantori e delle cantanti? Perché il tuo servo dovrebbe essere ancora di peso al re, mio signore? | 36 Your servant will go a little way over the Jordan with the king. Why should the king recompense me with such a reward? |
| 37 Il tuo servo attraverserà appena il Giordano con il re. E perché il re dovrebbe ripagarmi con questa ricompensa? | 37 Pray let your servant return, that I may die in my own city, near the grave of my father and my mother. But here is your servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do for him whatever seems good to you." |
| 38 Lascia tornare indietro il tuo servo, perché io muoia nella mia città presso la tomba di mio padre e di mia madre. Ma ecco il tuo servo Chimàm: verrà lui con il re, mio signore: fa' a lui quello che piace ai tuoi occhi". | 38 And the king answered, "Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do for him whatever seems good to you; and all that you desire of me I will do for you." |
| 39 Davide rispose: "Chimàm verrà con me, e io gli farò ciò che piace ai tuoi occhi: tutto quello che vorrai da me, te lo farò". | 39 Then all the people went over the Jordan, and the king went over; and the king kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and he returned to his own home. |
| 40 Allora tutto il popolo attraversò il Giordano. Il re era già passato. Il re baciò Barzillài, lo benedì ed egli tornò al suo paese. | 40 The king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him; all the people of Judah, and also half the people of Israel, brought the king on his way. |
| 41 Il re proseguì per Gàlgala e Chimàm passò con lui. Tutto il popolo di Giuda e metà del popolo d'Israele fecero passare il re. | 41 Then all the men of Israel came to the king, and said to the king, "Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen you away, and brought the king and his household over the Jordan, and all David's men with him?" |
| 42 Ma ecco che tutti gli uomini d'Israele andarono dal re e dissero: "Perché i nostri fratelli di Giuda ti hanno rubato e hanno fatto passare il Giordano al re, alla sua casa e a tutti gli uomini di Davide?". | 42 All the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, "Because the king is near of kin to us. Why then are you angry over this matter? Have we eaten at all at the king's expense? Or has he given us any gift?" |

Why then did you despise us? Were we not the first to speak of bringing back our king?" But the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel. |
