NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 Magistro chori. Filiorum Core. Psalmus.
1 [For the choirmaster Of the sons of Korah Psalm] Hear this, all nations, listen, al who dwel on earth,
2 Audite haec, omnes gentes;
auribus percipite, omnes, qui habitatis orbem:
2 people high and low, rich and poor alike!
3 quique humiles et viri nobiles,
simul in unum dives et pauper!
3 My lips have wisdom to utter, my heart good sense to whisper.
4 Os meum loquetur sapientiam,
et meditatio cordis mei prudentiam.
4 I listen careful y to a proverb, I set my riddle to the music of the harp.
5 Inclinabo in parabolam aurem meam,
aperiam in psalterio aenigma meum.
5 Why should I be afraid in times of trouble? Malice dogs me and hems me in.
6 Cur timebo in diebus malis,
cum iniquitas supplantantium circumdabit me?
6 They trust in their wealth, and boast of the profusion of their riches.
7 Qui confidunt in virtute sua
et in multitudine divitiarum suarum gloriantur.
7 But no one can ever redeem himself or pay his own ransom to God,
8 Etenim seipsum non redimet homo;
non dabit Deo propitiationem suam.
8 the price for himself is too high; it can never be
9 Nimium est pretium redemptionis animae eius:
ad ultimum deficiet,
9 that he wil live on for ever and avoid the sight of the abyss.
10 ut vivat usque in finem nec videat interitum.
10 For he wil see the wise also die no less than the fool and the brute, and leave their wealth behind forothers.
11 Et videbit sapientes morientes;
simul insipiens et stultus peribunt
et relinquent alienis divitias suas.
11 For ever no home but their tombs, their dwel ing-place age after age, though they gave their name towhole territories.
12 Sepulcra eorum domus illorum in aeternum;
tabernacula eorum in progeniem et progeniem,
etsi vocaverunt nominibus suis terras suas.
12 In prosperity people lose their good sense, they become no better than dumb animals.
13 Et homo, cum sit in honore, non permanebit;
comparatus est iumentis, quae pereunt,
et similis factus est illis.
13 So they go on in their self-assurance, right up to the end they are content with their lot.Pause
14 Haec via illorum, quorum fiducia in semetipsis,
et finis eorum, qui complacent in ore suo.
14 They are penned in Sheol like sheep, Death wil lead them to pasture, and those who are honest wilrule over them. In the morning al trace of them wil be gone, Sheol wil be their home.
15 Sicut oves in inferno positi sunt,
mors depascet eos;
descendent praecipites ad sepulcrum,
et figura eorum erit in consumptionem:
infernus habitaculum eorum.
15 But my soul God wil ransom from the clutches of Sheol, and wil snatch me up.Pause
16 Verumtamen Deus redimet animam meam,
de manu inferi vere suscipiet me.
16 Do not be overawed when someone gets rich, and lives in ever greater splendour;
17 Ne timueris, cum dives factus fuerit homo,
et cum multiplicata fuerit gloria domus eius,
17 when he dies he wil take nothing with him, his wealth wil not go down with him.
18 quoniam, cum interierit, non sumet omnia,
neque descendet cum eo gloria eius.
18 Though he pampered himself while he lived -- and people praise you for looking after yourself-
19 Cum animae suae in vita ipsius benedixerit:
“ Laudabunt te quod benefecisti tibi ”,
19 he will go to join the ranks of his ancestors, who wil never again see the light.
20 tamen introibit ad progeniem patrum suorum,
qui in aeternum non videbunt lumen.
20 In prosperity people lose their good sense, they become no better than dumb animals.
21 Homo, cum in honore esset, non intellexit;
comparatus est iumentis, quae pereunt,
et similis factus est illis.
