| 1 E il Signore parlò a Mosè, e disse: Va’, parti da questo luogo tu, e il popol tuo cavato da te dalla terra d'Egitto, verso la terra, che io promisi con giuramento ad Abramo, ad Isacco, e a Giacobbe, quando dissi: Daralla alla tua stirpe: | 1 The LORD said to Moses, "Depart, go up hence, you and the people whom you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, 'To your descendants I will give it.' |
| 2 E manderò tuo precursore l'Angelo per cacciarne il Chananeo, e l'Amorrheo, e l'Hetheo, e il Pherezeo, e l'Heveo, e' l Jebuseo; | 2 And I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. |
| 3 Onde tu entri nella terra, che scorre latte e miele. Imperocché io non verrò teco, dappoiché tu sei un popolo di dura cervice: perché io non abbia a sterminarti nel viaggio. | 3 Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; but I will not go up among you, lest I consume you in the way, for you are a stiff-necked people." |
| 4 Ma avendo udito il popolo queste dolorose parole pianse: e nissuno si vestì de' soliti suoi ornamenti. | 4 When the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned; and no man put on his ornaments. |
| 5 E il Signore disse a Mosè: Di’ a' figliuoli d'Israele: Popolo di dura cervice sei tu: se io mi porrò una volta in mezzo a te, io ti sterminerò. Su via, deponi i tuoi ornamenti affinché io sappia, come ho da trattarti. | 5 For the LORD had said to Moses, "Say to the people of Israel, 'You are a stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would consume you. So now put off your ornaments from you, that I may know what to do with you.'" |
| 6 Deposero adunque i figliuoli d'Israele i loro ornamenti appiè del monte Horeb. | 6 Therefore the people of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward. |
| 7 E Mosè deposto il tabernacolo, lo tese in lontananza fuor degli alloggiamenti, e chiamollo il tabernacolo dell'alleanza. E tutti quelli del popolo, che avean qualche disputa, andavano al tabernacolo dell'alleanza fuori degli alloggiamenti. | 7 Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp; and he called it the tent of meeting. And every one who sought the LORD would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp. |
| 8 E allorché Mosè usciva per andare al tabernacolo, si alzava tutta la moltitudine, e ognuno se ne stava ritto sulla porta della sua tenda, e tenevan dietro cogli occhi a Mosè, fino a che non era entrato nel tabernacolo. | 8 Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose up, and every man stood at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he had gone into the tent. |
| 9 E quando questi era entrato nel tabernacolo dell'alleanza, la colonna della nuvola calava, e stava alla porta, e Dio parlava con Mosè, | 9 When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the door of the tent, and the LORD would speak with Moses. |
| 10 Veggendo tutti, come la colonna della nuvola era ferma alla porta del tabernacolo. Eglino poi si stavan sulle porte delle loro tende, e adoravano il Signore. | 10 And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the door of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, every man at his tent door. |
| 11 E il Signore parlava con Mosè faccia a faccia, come suole un uomo parlare col proprio amico. E quando egli se ne tornava agli alloggiamenti, il suo giovine ministro Giosuè figliuolo di Nun non si dipartiva dal tabernacolo. | 11 Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tent. |
| 12 E Mosè disse al Signore: Tu mi comandi di esser guida di questo popolo, e non mi fai sapere, chi sia colui, che tu manderai con me, e ciò anche dopo che hai detto: Ti conosco per nome, e tu hai trovato grazia dinanzi a me. | 12 Moses said to the LORD, "See, thou sayest to me, 'Bring up this people'; but thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, 'I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.' |
| 13 Se adunque io ho trovato grazia nel tuo cospetto, fammi veder la tua faccia, affinché io ti conosca, e trovi grazia dinanzi a' tuoi occhi: getta il tuo sguardo sopra questo popolo, e sopra questa nazione. | 13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found favor in thy sight, show me now thy ways, that I may know thee and find favor in thy sight. Consider too that this nation is thy people." |
| 14 E il Signore disse: La mia presenza ti precederà, e io darotti requie. | 14 And he said, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." |
| 15 E Mosè disse: Se tu stesso non vai innanzi a noi, non ci far partire da questo luogo. | 15 And he said to him, "If thy presence will not go with me, do not carry us up from here. |
| 16 Imperocché come mai potrem conoscere io, e il popolo di aver trovato grazia nel tuo cospetto, se non vieni con noi, affinché siamo rispettati da tutti i popoli, che abitano la terra? | 16 For how shall it be known that I have found favor in thy sight, I and thy people? Is it not in thy going with us, so that we are distinct, I and thy people, from all other people that are upon the face of the earth?" |
| 17 E il Signore disse a Mosè: Quello pure, che tu hai detto, io lo farò: perché tu hai trovato grazia dinanzi a me, e ti conosco per nome, | 17 And the LORD said to Moses, "This very thing that you have spoken I will do; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name." |
| 18 E quegli disse: Fammi veder la tua gloria. | 18 Moses said, "I pray thee, show me thy glory." |
| 19 Rispose: Io ti mostrerò tutto il bene, e pronunzierò il nome di Signore dinanzi a te: come io avrò misericordia di chi vorrò, e sarò clemente verso di chi mi piace. | 19 And he said, "I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you my name 'The LORD'; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. |
| 20 E soggiunse: Non potrai vedere la mia faccia; perocché non viverà uomo dopo avermi veduto. | 20 But," he said, "you cannot see my face; for man shall not see me and live." |
| 21 E di poi: Ecco, disse, che io ho un luogo, dove mi sto, e tu starai su quel masso. | 21 And the LORD said, "Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand upon the rock; |
| 22 E quando passerà (per colà) la mia gloria, io ti porrò nella bocca di quel masso, e ti adombrerò colla mia destra, fin a tanto ch'io sia passato. | 22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; |
| 23 E ritirerò la mia mano, e vedrai il mio tergo: ma la faccia mia non potrai vederla. | 23 then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen." |
